Push Button Start (merged 11.07)

If you want these things you better hurry while supplies last. Ignited was brought in by Catz and Catz USA has gone belly up.

That site says it requires a 24mm hole. Measure the cig hole and you tell us. I'm sure that if it didn't just slide in a dremel would make the necessary adjustments.

I really like the way that one lights up... much nicer than the Ignited one.

i did it to my 1.8 eclipse all i did was get a 3 prong switch, run one wire to the switch on the solenoid WITH A RELAY AND FUSE, one to the battery, and one to ground. you still have to put the key to the on for fuel and ign but i have no problems with it..the best anti-theft :p

how does a remote starter work with a manual. don't you have to press the clutch to start it.

You can remove the electrical connector right about the clutch pedal and then start it without having the clutch pedal in. Just make sure it is out of gear! :thumb:

I have a push button starter in my demolition derby talon...but then again I dont need a key to start that ROFL

My old eclipse had a push button starter because I didnt feel like fixing the ignition switch when it broke. Turning the ignition switch to start did nothing, so instead of figuring out the problem I just put a button under the dash. Then I had to turn the key to 'on' (of course this unlocked the steering too) and push the button. Mine was hidden so it wasnt really rice either

All the new Bimmiers have push button start, I enjoy doing it when I drive them at work but I think it would get kinda tiring. Of course the S2000 as well.

i know someone who wired up his jeep to start without keys, the removed the ingition lock and rewired the car, he has and ingnition button BUT he made his own system to enable ign1, ign2,and the acc just having a keycard or a remote anywhere on you, like corvettes and high end cars do, but his system uses a magnetic card that you have to swipe on the right spot to activate the relay for the ingtion button

here you go this might help you guys out

You could probably get a keyless ignition system from GM (cadillac, corvette) or toyota (from the lexus line) and use those keys, starting system, etc etc. It would probably be a bi*** to install but would be pretty cool if you could.

Ok, I'm not one to bring old thread, but I have a question that I am hoping one of you that installed this can answer for me.....

How do I install the Push button. I just got mine in the mail (car won't start by the ignition switch) and it came with a 4 prong relay. So how do I got about installing this. I have a theory and a pretty much good idea, but I figured I'd ask anyway.

Here are my two ideas to wiring it up.

The red wires are hot wires (12v)
The black wires are grounds
The blue wire is the hot only when the button is pushed
The purple wire is the signal wire that activates the starter solenoid.

What you guys think?

I know this is somewhat old, but you want to use the second diagram. The first one will be running power through the relay constantly and it basically like connecting a wire from the positive directly to the negtive, not good.

I did this on my buddy's stealth. Not so much because he was a ricer but because we just finished a auto to manual swap and could not get the starter to work correctly. The swap for stealths isnt as documented as it here for dsms. Needless to say, the ricer in him loved it.

well here's what i think, you could wire up the acc, acc1, an on, to relays, the unlock output from an alarm or a keyless entry would activate the relays, and when you hit the lock button it deactivates the relays.

I have one like this in my stock car.
I know one is the power coming in (from the ignition). One is the power going out to the starter. A third is probably for the illumination from your lights. Fourth could be an accessory or possibly alarm related...

Hope that helps.

Read the instructions, or get a tester on it.

Could be a + - circuit to illuminate it, and the the other two posts could be your starter circuit; or could be what was mentioned above.

Don't assume anything with it, scan the diagram in and we'll walk you through it.

I had been reading up on a push button starter install on a car here and have seen that most people here think it is "ricey" and whatnot. But I have been toying with the idea of putting one underhood (along with a kill switch) to perhaps save a little time tuning my ride when I don't have a helper. Of course I would use all safety features of a standard push button starter, including neutral safety switch and Ebrake switch. I figure I can always do this with a remote start kit with a remote on keychain, etc. but I am notorious for losing my keys, and a permanent switch underhood would be far more convenient when my hand are busy elsewhere.

I realize the inherent issues with a push button starter in-car, with using a key to unlock the steering wheel and all, but none of this would be a problem in using it like this. Also unless I am mistaken it wouldn't make the car any easier to steal, as you would still need the key to drive it.

Also I could use some help figuring out how exactly to wire it.

What do you guys think about this?
Thanks up front for any insights.

Well.....the car will not start or run with out the Ignition on but here is how you can set up the push button starter inside or outside the car (underhood)

You are going to need a High Amp push button some wire and a 30 amp SPDT relay

With the push button you can wire one side to 12V (igntion 12v would be best but 12v constant if you want, May come in handy for the compression tests) and run the other side to the 87 pole on the relay.

Then take the 86 pole from the relay and wire it to the parking brake

pole 30 will go to starter wire at the igniton swith

pole 85 will go to 12v igntion OR 12v contant depeneding on your 1st decision on how you would like it to operate.

pole 87A will not be used

Basically this will enable the push button ONLY with the parking brake up but inop with the parking brake down.

As far as powering the Ignition so it will start when wanted to you can do this...

We are going to need 1 more relay and the switch, Im gonna tell you how with your basic plain jane switch....

Take one side of the switch to 12 volt constant @ battery

Run other side to pole 87 on your relay

Pole 30 will go to vehicles IGNITION wire at the ignition switch

pole 86 will go to parking brake wire

pole 85 will be wired to 12v constant

pole 87A will once again not be used

This will only enable the switch to power the ignition when parking brake is up and inop when down. Now you can pull the parking brake to activate both push button start and switch, Flip the switch to power the vehicles ignition then push the button. Car will crank, start, and stay running untill parking brake is let down or switch is flipped to off position.

12 VOLT CONSTANT @ IGN swith: WHITE
12VOLT IGNITION @ switch: Black/white
STARTER wire @ switch :Black/red
I can't remeber the wire color of the parking brake wire but I want to say its green/white...there should only be 1 wire coming off the parking brake switch.

Hope this helps, Good luck......DONT EVER USE THIS IF YOU EVEN THINK THE VEHICLE IS IN GEAR!!! ALWAYS CHECK BEFORE USING, and dont trust someone NOT to play with the shifter (they always do) so check everytime!

Thank you very much, this is everything I had hoped for (and more) :D

I also want to add that I love the E-brake being the master switch type idea, just wish I had thought of it :p

Here's what I did with my Neon: leave your car unlocked in a parking lot. Someone steals it. Voila! No push button start OR key! Awesome! Just hop in and drive!

Seriously though, I actually have thought of that, and it's kind of a cool idea, (had my neon actually rigged up that way) but came to realize when I got my DSM that its kind of a silly/redundant thing to do and no way am I going to rip apart my ignition so I can do something I can already do with the key. To anyone interested in doing this:

Think twice about this kind of mod, it can screw things up ( like relays and things that can't take the voltage if you don't do it right) and don't forget about the steering column lock. I tried it once and Key is better! I have no idea why I bothered.
