Both the Oil Filter housings I have are leaking, one I cracked, the other is leaking from the rear plug that has the spring.
I picked up a "re-manufactured" OFH on eBay, and I am unsure if I should use it, they painted the entire thing, including the internal surfaces from what I can see.
Is this thing good to use, or do I need to strip off the paint?
 
At first I wasn't sure, but it smells of fresh paint, and the finish is uniform on every surface I can see

It looks like it was sand blasted to me. I would take a razor blade to the gasket surfaces and see if paint will come off. If it doesn't then it was sand blasted, in that case I would take every bolt/nut out of it to blow it out with air and clean it to make sure there is no blast media stuck in it.
 
It also looks sand blasted to me, but as mentioned hit it with a wire wheel or sand paper first

Never run oil on or through a painted piece. On one of my honda builds I used a new $38 oil pan from ebay, when I pulled the pan again I found the black paint on the pan was all peeling and collecting in the oil pickup

"New" ebay one on top after 1 month of driving, used $50 pan with 200k miles on bottom

Soak that OFH in ChemDip (carburetor cleaner). It will strip ANY paint off then clean it with solvent or BPC and compress air blow dry.
 
scotch brite the mating surfaces. thats about all you need to do for the sealing surfaces. the rest will be ok

Thanks for the reminder. Picked up an airbrush-style media blaster at the harbor freight in san fran (first one i've ever been to because I'm from the great north) so it will give me a chance to try it out and remove the overspray that made it into the new rockauto sourced pan

Same thing happened to me with a transmission pan I purchased on ebay. I've learned my lesson with those cheap ones. Always strip the paint.

Im not sure if it helps, that peeled pan i bought on ebay is also sold on rock auto. I will always trust a used pan that i hammered flat; over a china stamped piece thats sold with zero accountability of quality.

I would barely trust dorman to make a quality piece

Find a used pan is my advice. You can see it was rusting, that honda was a daily and that pan sat on the floor for maybe a few days before it rusted
 
(Chiming in from right field, 'cause I know NOTHING.)

Even if @ileagleracing removes the paint from the gasket surfaces, is there any concern for the paint coming off from the passageways during operation? (Given that this part has surfaces upstream - and - downstream from the filter, by definition.) Gives me the creeps.

Eh, once I remove the paint on the inside, metal is metal.
