My oil pressure sender decided to take out a bunch of aluminum.

I'm running a 1990 car, with the external oil cooler. With a 91+ oil filter housing fit on my block without modification or are the water lines different sizes?

It's slim pickings for 1990 cars out there and I need a way to get back on the road. Also do n/a cars have oil coolers? Thank you

Also what other cars host a 4g63 with the same oil filter housing?

A '91 and early '92 (6-bolt) oil filter housing (OFH) will fit, no problem. A '92+ (7-bolt) OFH will not bolt up because of the different bolt patterns between 6 and 7-bolt engines.

However, if you switch to the water-cooled OFH and you want use the cooler, you will also need the water pipe connecting the water pump and lower radiator hose and the accompanying hoses running between the water pipe and the OFH, etc. You could also just use the housing in place and leave the water-cooled cooler ports open without changing the water pipe or anything.

Non-turbo cars were not equipped with an oil cooler.

Replaced it. The car is still leaking a LOT of oil.

The oil pan is covered with oil from the crank side of the motor to the back. It looks like it could be sprayed by the oil pressure sender because it has oil on it too. I'm not sure where to look.

Oil pan isn't leaking but something just about it is, as the block isn't coated in oil.

I know first hand that a leaky oil pressure sensor (for the dummy light) can cause a glorified mess. I wouldn't think the oil pressure sender (for the gauge) would be any different.

Unfortunately we aren't there looking at your car so we cannot tell you exactly where it is leaking from. If you suspect one of the above sensors as a problem area, take the necessary steps to correct it.

Other common leaky areas on these cars include the oil filter housing gasket, which you have likely sealed, valve cover, camshaft seals, the oil pan or the front main seal. Other less likely possibilities are the oil pump seal, the front casing gasket, or head gasket. It could also possibly be your turbo oil return line, but I doubt that since you are finding oil on the back of the oil pan.

It could also be coming through the threads of a bolt like one of the OFH or other front casing bolts if thread sealant wasn't used.

Hope that helps some.

i didnt use thread sealer. you gotta be kidding me! i hate working on these cars.
ill throw some dye in the oil and see what i can find but its quite a leak to be coming from threads.

oil pressure switch replaced, pulling oil pressure sender and plugging tomorrow. i have the gasket for front case but the past three oil changes have had less than 20 miles. 4 changes of full synthetic in less than a month is getting expensive!
will report findings tomorrow night

Sensors aren't leaking, OFH gasket isn't leaking, valve cover gasket is new, all front seals were replaced with timing belt 25 miles ago.
Turbo return line was replaced 25 miles ago with a new oil pan gasket.
Oil pump seal? Is that the lower right balance shaft seal too? I changed them out.
I'll rip off the front case today or tomorrow because that seems likely to me.

That would be the oil pump seal I was referring to.

There is a couple other threads dealing with oil leaks, you might check the castle plug behind (and above) the oil pump sprocket. It is supposed to have an O-ring behind it. To be honest, I never knew that plug could come out which is why I hadn't suggested it yet. It would definitely be worth a try before tearing off the front case.

The leak is coming from the exhaust side of the block though, that seal was replaced. I'll give that castle nut a new seal anyway.

at least that's where I think it's coming from. It's really hard to tell where brand new oil comes out of a freshly cleaned block.

guuuhhh I wanna kill this car. I'm gonna whine about it some more. thanks for the heads up will post when I'm active on the car again.

I found the leak, well not really.
It's not going to the back of the oil pan. It's on the front of the block looks to be right at or above the oil pan near the oil filter. I can't see much, these stupid engine blocks are black.

Hey man,

I am having the same exact issue as you! I have replaced all of the gaskets this past saturday and I still have the oil leak! It seems to be coming from the oil filter housing somewhere. I replaced that gasket and all other gaskets, but for some reason it wont stop leaking. I am putting in a half a quart of oil every time I drive to work and back (6 miles?). It's getting really expensive! If anyone has any other suggestions that would be great.
thanks.

I'm taking off my front case. I just ordered all the gaskets online and am going to rip off the front case and reseal it.

As far as I know that's the only thing that could be leaking, I've replaced everything else!
When doing the timing belt could I have shifted the front case? I replaced tensioner, all pulleys and stuff. I'm not doubting that front case could have shifted but is there any other possibility?

That is a lot of oil. Make sure, first off, that your oil filter is secure. Did you use thread sealant on the oil filter housing bolts? If you have balance shafts still, did you use thread sealant on the tensioner pulley bolt? If you have eliminated the balance shafts, did you use thread sealant on the bolt to close off that hole? I've seen a lot of oil come out of these holes, but not that much.

Not likely. Hopefully sealing it up again will fix it. If not, I would start suspecting a cracked front case. You should inspect it thoroughly while you have it off.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Hey Guys,
I am still having an oil issue :( Like I said before, I replaced every gasket on the timing side. I have also taken the oil pan off a bunch of times to reseal it and see if that was the problem.

I haven't put any thread sealer on the oil filter housing so I can try that today and see if that works. But for some reason I don't think that it could possibly be leaking that much from them bolts.

Also, I noticed that a few bolts that hold up the oil pan on the front case side are a little striped! They will tighten but if tightened too much they spin. It looked like it sealed fine and I let the grey rtv dry for a day before adding oil again. Is it possible that it could be leaking from here too? I didn't think there was much oil pressure in this spot so idk. But this whole oil leak problem is really killing me!:banghead:

On top of all this, I am smoking like crazy now because my exhaust is covered in oil. Its smoking so bad that its even coming through the firewall and into the car while I'm driving. Smells horrible and I feel like my DSM is slowly killing me:ohdamn:

Thanks for all your help guys!

if u removed your ballance shafts u must replace the balance shaft belt tensioner bolt cause lots of oil will leak there. also there is one short oil pan bolt in the front if u use a long bolt where the short one goes your pan wont seal there properly.

Yeah, I have a bolt with gasket sealer where the balance shaft gear was. I also have the short bolt in the correct spot on the oil pan. Still having the issue. But took the car off the road for winter. Maybe after the snow is gone I'll start taking a look at it again and go through everything.
