Hey guys I got a non turbo short block that I'm rebuilding, and I'm going to run it turbo. It came with the stock air cooled oil filter housing. I know some people say you have to use a cooler, and some say you don’t. I’m still on the fence about that…

The real question is the non turbo oil cooler different? Does it lower the oil pressure since those engines don’t have to feed a turbo and oil squirters? Since I’m planning on running a hx35 I’m going to test the oil pressure, but I’d like to start with the correct oil filter housing from the get go.

And ya know what let’s hear the air cooled vs. oil cooler while we’re at it.

I don't think the cooler was, or would have been different, for cost savings of manufacturing. I really DON'T know but it doesn't make business sense. I would bet they are the same. Same banjo bolt size? If so, it's fine and better than none.
@19Eclipse90 , can you tell if there is a part number difference? Thanks Brian!

Non-turbos never came with an oil cooler. If the installed housing is the air-cooled version, it’s not original to the engine (assuming the engine truly is a non-turbo).

All 4G63 equipped DSMs used the same pressure relief spring, MD050299. So, approximately the same pressure, regardless of the housing.

Maybe I'm sayin the wrong terminology. The oil filter housing that is on the block right now is the version that doesn’t use a cooler at all. It’s not water cooled, and it has OEM plugs where the cooler would go. I would take a picture of it, but the short block is at my buddies garage. It’s not a forward facing one either. It has the filter at 90°

1990 turbo (air-cooled) oil filter housing on the left. The two large ports feed (and return) the oil to (and from) a heat exchanger, the cooler, that uses air passing over the fins to cool the oil.

(2x) DSM non-turbo oil filter housings on the right have no additional provisions for cooling.

All have the oil filter at 90 degrees.

Yes i have a non turbo for sure then. Idk why i thought it had two smaller sized plugs. Is that fine to run on a turbo car?

Quite literally, the last thing I did to my car was install this non-turbo OFH. Prior to that, I was running the 1990 housing without an oil cooler (spring for cooler bypass valve removed), and had been running it for at least 5 and probably nearer 10 years. But I’m only on a 16G and don’t really beat on my car so I’m never too concerned about oil having adequate cooling time before shut down. If all you’re doing is daily driving with a spirited drive here and there, should be fine without a cooler. If planning to race at any level with that turbo, you might consider it, if even for some peace of mind.

Yes that’s exactly what i was picturing in my head! You’re the man. I don’t plan on racing at all. Just drive it once a week or so, and make cool wahhhh pshhh noises a couple times at bystanders 😂 I’m sold on using the non turbo OFH thanks guys!

Thanks Brian!!! I KNEW you could add some valuable info for 1990 stuff. Sure appreciate you @19Eclipse90 !!!
