Oil Burning issue...could be turbo seal?

On a 1997 GST...
Well, i just recently installed an apex'i downpipe and exhaust 3 days ago, and now i am starting to see random smoking out of my exhaust, never smoked before. the smoke color is grey, which leads me to believe that it is buring somewhere in the turbo. (read that somewhere in the forums). I checked the Spark Plugs, they look fine, i took the intake pipe off of the turbo, and there was no shaft play, i checked the oil lines for kinks, there was none. The only thing i can think of was, when i got the downpipe and exhaust, i got them used. they were coated in a film of oil on the inside when i got them. i didnt think it would take a few days to burn it off, but jeez....another thing i was thinking, could it be something w the pcv system and blow-by?
-the car exhaust smoking is random...after driving when i push in the clutch and sit at a stoplight, it will smoke for a few seconds and then eventually stop, random times during driving, etc...doesnt matter if i am in boost or not. and NEVER smokes when i start the car up...i tried to cover everything here, anyone got any ideas? thanks!

The oil can take a while to burn off. Think of how long a drop of oil smokes on a hot manifold. Give it some time and see if it clears up. As for the PCV if you want to check it, remove it and try to blow through the nipple side. If you are able to blow any amount of air through it then it's bad. Replace it with an OEM valve or go and get one of these 3/8" Kynar® Standard Check Valves | U.S. Plastic Corp.

cool, thanks dude and will do. i know there was quite a bit of film in that downpipe when i installed it, i figured it could take a while to burn off i just wanted to see what other dsm'ers thought. ill give it a bit and see how it does...hoping for the best!

Was this issue ever resolved? I just recently bought my GSX in November and the owner told me that if I drove it hard it would start to smoke similarly explained here. After a few days the smoking started to dissipate over all. The owner said that the turbo was brand new and that maybe there was some oil that got in it during installation some excuse to that effect. I was also told that she is cat-less I could care less about being cat-less but I figured maybe because you installed a new exhaust system as well our situations might be relative. Although the smoking has stopped I can occasionally smell the burning oil. If my situation is completely different I will post a thread explaining more in depth my issue.

If you smell burning oil, the best thing you can do is clean your engine off completely, drive it for a day or so, and then check over the engine and look for leaks. That is the only sure-fire way to locate a leak if you have one that is external.

As for an internal burn, simply watch your exhaust. If it's bluish in hue then you're burning oil somewhere.

Well the smoking has stopped and it hasn't smoked even when I'm pushing her so I guess its gone for now, I will wait till it gets warm again. Also I did find a leak from the oil sender to the turbo its not bad but I guess that's the place where the oil would be burning from because of the temperature of the turbo. I have a spare oil sender so I can replace that easy. If that doesnt stop the burning smell would replacing the oil cooling unit help?

The only way I could say "Yes it would Help" is if it were confirmed that there was a fault with the cooling unit. If it's not broken, don't fix it.

Well it never stopped, it usually only smokes when i downshift, usually after boosting, on a warm engine. Never smokes, ever on start up. SO, would this be the turbo seal?

And if it helps, my car builds boost fine, no wierd noises when spooling, or whatever. And also like posted above, all my plugs are in perfect shape, etc. The smoke is more greyish, than bluish grey.

On my car, i had a 1993 hyundai scoupe turbo with a garrett t-15 when the turbo seal went bad, IT WENT BAD, was fine 1 sec next sec, WHITE THICK stinky smoke out the exhaust car ran good, just smoked up the u know what. Replaced the turbo no more smoke. Yours doesnt sound this bad. o and my turbo was damaged and would not build boost about 3 miles after driving like that. ON inspectoin it was gone..... the blades were chewed up bent and the shaft was moving maybe even a quarter inch.
