My car burns oil.... About a Quart every 2 weeks.

What happens is.

I start my car up, you can smell oil but you dont' see any comin out the tail pipe. but if you let it idle for say 15 minutes, and then give it the gas, POOF a bunch of white smoke comes up the back. Nothing scary, just smoke.

I put some of that stop smoke stuff in and all that, and all it did was keep it from smoking all the time (which is what I wanted it to do)

A Local mechanic told me it was my valves and wanted to charge me 400 bucks for it, But could it be my head gasket? I really don't have 400 dollars at the moment. And if I don't get it fixed ASAP could I do more damage to my engine?

Thanks!

BTW my car is a 96 Talon with 129k miles on it with A/T. :talon:

I have heard that white smoke usually means water, just like blue equals fuel, and black equals oil. If your car is burning oil like that, it really sounds like you have bad rings. Your rings could be allowing oil to come up past them, and thus getting in the chamber, when the gas comes in, and the spark happens, you are igniting your oil as well as gas. You might want to run a compression check. With an engine that has high mileage as yours, you might as well be planning a rebuild soon.

hahaha didnt even have to do a search... Just got that probem recently. LOTS of smoke, ESPECIALLY in reverse and 1st. People are yelling at me everywhere i go now, its so embarassing, especially with the damage from the deer and a headlight i cant fix cause the light is all bashed up and the hood is bent into it.

*sigh*

A Rebuild? Wellll the problem is that I don't really have the spare cash at this time.. How much does a rebuild cost anyway? And can I limp along for awhile? Car drives fine otherwise..

Thanks in advanced.

no no no. white is water, blue is OIL, and black is FUEL. ;)

Well, if you smell oil, it's oil. Is it all just *burning* off or do you see drops left on the ground?

My '97 RS (about to hit 90k) has same thing. You can smell it burning from the engine bay at idle and sometimes a bit of smoke comes out the exhuast. Other than checking the oil level more than normal, she runs fine. Idles normal and I have not seen oil & coolant mixing (it better not since I already had HG and VC replaced). Usually when the HG is gone the oil and coolant mix. Try looking at the underside of your oil cap...does there seem to be sludge left on it? If not, you're probably fine.

I'm in same boat as you as far as money...I'm guessing theyre right that is is the valves/rings. As long as you keep an eye on her for now, you should be okay. Just always have a stash of extra oil.

For me when i had the oil burn smell. It came after i drove for about 10minutes. I did have white smoke come out and everything. It turned out to be my headgasket. Could be different for you.

Before I replaced my Hg, i was driving down the road and the OIL light came up on ma cluster. So i was pretty scared, so took it to a shop, and he said it was my HG.

Make sure you fill up ur oil so it doesnt drain on ya :)

Just a suggestion from my experiences.

hope things turn out good for you.
