Hey everyone! If you guys have been keeping up with me with my vehicle which is an Eagle Talon Tsi 1997 FWD Automatic. I have pretty much fixed it almost 75% and it is my daily driver but recently my RPMs have been going high and I have only been able to drive it with O/D on to keep it from stalling out on me. It has even turned off on me which I believe is something else with the fuel pump... Idk but many of my friends and local car enthusiasts have told me that my transmission is slipping.

so I've been looking for a replacement for one and I'm in the defense of swapping it for a manual since that is something I've always wanted to do to it. Where could I even begin to look for transmissions for the car could I just retrofit the parts from an eclipse? since they are similar? How hard could it possibly be to do something like that at home?

You guys have always helped me and are majorly the reason why I haven't given up on it and sold my vehicle! Waiting for yous guys' advice! Funny story I took it to a local mechanic shop and they wouldn't accept to work on it because they didn't like old jdm cars and especially a brand that they had never heard of.

We were running with mid 12 second cars in our FWD Auto spyder with a little 16g on it. I think you'd be sorry if you swapped. Fix the trans and enjoy what most don't have.

It can be swapped, isn’t too hard with a little mechanical know how, and yes the Eclipse components would be proper from the right model being the 2 are the same car, but as stated above take several considerations before proceeding.

A stock auto trans can take you pretty far and I would confirm the transmission is even slipping before going to extremes. Not to say it’s impossible, but typically one of these transmissions is only going to start slipping from wear if it’s been beaten excessively or ran low on fluid or is currently low on fluid.

There’s disadvantages and advantages to either configuration, and I use a manual trans myself, but the automatic is much less failure prone. Plenty of guys have gone pretty fast on stock automatic transmissions with just a shift kit, hell last weekend at the shootout the stock bottom end record was set even higher (same guy just outdid his previous record) at 8.90 at 151, and that was with an auto with Kiggly end clutches being the only upgrade internally with the exception of a shift kit in the valve body.

A lot of research to do before pulling the trigger, don’t let the local Subaru and Focus ST guys telling you “mAnUaLs ArE fAsTeR” persuade you to make the wrong decision, read up on which is really better for what you want to do and then make up your mind.

One thing to consider, IF your transmission itself is really having problems it’s much easier and inexpensive to just bolt another known good automatic in it and go.

I'm spoiled. I have one of each. I like both for different reasons.
HERE is my son in the video car (2g, HX35 on 40lbs) and I am in the far lane in my car (1g, HX40 on 24lbs). Both auto cars in this one.
HERE is my 5 speed car vs a GSXR600.
Both cars are fun as hell. :thumb:

Miller import parts. Junkyard specializes in dsm vehicles.

Thanks I'll look into it!

So keep it Automatic and just get it fixed then? You would suggest.

Interesting I'll do some more research on it and see what I can find! Anyway I could contact you easier if I have any more questions.

Wow, those videos are sick! Hopefully, I can make my car like that one day!

I've had an auto dsm and they are fun to daily drive, most of my issues with the auto trans come from them being higher mileage and the input shaft seal to the fluid pump leaking, or the torque converter not being installed correctly.

The manuals feel faster than they are, and the auto cars do feel a little more sluggish when it comes to building boost, but if youre in the boost it just never stops accelerating

So if it was my car i would ask the local forum or local facebook groups who is the go to guy for automatic transmissions. See if there is one.

If there isn't and youre just going to hope a hole in the wall transmission shop would do a good rebuild, id consider swapping to manual

The manual should be less prone to having problems in the future, and easy to find replacement parts for.
