Well, when I was trying to find the diff and axles as a package, I tried everywhere I could think of, and when I called Shep, and they told me to check out this salvage yard in south Florida cause they get tons of EVO stuff. So, I call and the yard tells me they dont have any right now, and that they only sell the whole rear setup with the frame and everything because the Australian guys with later EVOs are ditching the AYC rears for the mechanical rear and theyre buying up everything they can find over here. The guy at the yard also told me the rear diff and axles can be sold for up to $1300.00 to the Aussies . I dont know if they just dont like the AYC for racing over there or if its not allowed or what but they sure are making it difficult to get this stuff at the yard...

I found the same thing. I was talking to two different salvage yards that are in Florida, justjapsparts.com and TAEimports. I was looking for a pair of EVO8 rear axles. They told me that they will only sell it complete with the diff and subframe. Basically the entire rear...they wanted $1200.00

Seriously. I can't catch a break on these used parts. I tried looking for a 2000-2005 MR2 Spyder power steering pump, which I heard others getting for $100... I can't find one for less than $299. Now it's the Evo diff... Damn it.

I can only assume that Scott started out with an OEM VC LSD - since there would be no reason to change joints otherwise - so either the Evo 8 tripod fits onto the 2G LSD axle splines, or the 2G LSD tripod is a "close enough" fit into the Evo 8 cup to work.

But I don't know - I never investigated Evo 8 joints because that's not a legal change under my ruleset. So my remaining question is where the he!! has Scott gone ???

I'm here... The Talon has been laid-up for the past 2 years, so I haven't been keeping up with the forums.

I bought my EVO8 rear diff setup second-hand, so I'm not sure of its details. All I know is that it's DSS Level 5 axles with EVO8 cups, and a 2G rear diff housing with EVO8 internals built by Shepherd Transmission.

I have a 94 mirage hatch with the 1.6 mivec engine (pretty much a mitsubishi b16) that I autocross with. It compete's in our street tire class on 15x7 Kosei K4R/225/45R15 Toyo R1R tires. Cusco Zero2 coilovers 7kg/mm front 5kg/mm rear springs, 26mm rear sway bar & GSX front brakes. Power wise not a whole lot going on maybe 150whp (for now, plans are to get 200whp out of it)

I just got my hands on a Cusco 1 way diff that was used in an Evo 2 from Japan that did their version of unspellable autocross. It uses both cone springs and coil springs, the steeper 45* cam and has 1 plate disengaged.

I have read the pdf from cusco but still don't quite grasp the reason behind using both the cone spring (presses the plates together towards the center of the diff) and the coil springs (presses the plates together towards the outside of the diff).

Also should I stick with the steeper 45* cam or go for the shallower 35* cam?

Got it from a local wrecking yard here in the Sacramento area... Used OEM Mitsubishi Auto Parts Recycling

Call up Robert and tell him Chris from DSMtuners sent you. Maybe that will help with a deal if he has another one, maybe not.

Regarding the cams, I think the larger ones in the pic would provide less lockup, so really, youd have to drive the car, see if it behaves the way you like, and switch to the other cams if its locking too aggressively and causing understeer with your setup. (It also looks like if you used the larger cam with the cross shaft flipped, it would become a 1.5 way?? Does it say anything in the manual about that?) Also, equal length axles in front are always a good thing, and in theory would be a bit easier on the diff.

Ok i get what you are saying. I will throw it in next weekend and see how it behaves.

I don't think swapping the cross shaft around will make it a 1.5 way, i see what you are getting at but it looks like it might put too much wear on the cross shaft on deccel and the cam on accel. The cams either come as a dual angle 1 way (like mine), 1way & 1.5way or a 1.5way and 2way.

I have the front axle/halfshaft from my old Evo3 that i just need to make a bracket to bolt to the back of this 4g92 block. I will see if i can get that done at the same time.

If i get this done before the next autox meet I will report back with my findings

I'm also thinking about going with an evo8 rear LSD, but had a couple questions to make sure I get the correct thing. Believe in the US, the rear diffs with AYC weren't available, so thats not an issue (believe the rear diff's with AYC look completely different from the non AYC, which look similiar to our). So all evo8's come with the mechanical LSD were after?

Also I read someone mention that you needed the rear diff from a car thats non ACD? Does this matter & how do you know which are ACD vs non ACD?

EVO 3 to EVO 8 had the same mechanical diff availible. AYC, as far as I know isnt available til the 9 and 10 came out, and it does look very different from the standard diff and so do the inboard cups on the alxes. Im unfamiliar with the ACD, but would like to know about it.

Got another question to add. Does it need to be a factory non LSD diff housing? I thought some were using the factory LSD housing but have read that only the non LSD housing will work for some reason?

Regarding the 2G housing, the only thing I believe I ran into was ACM found that the viscous LSD Diff wont fit into the non LSD housing, but the EVO Diff fits into both. I find it strange that the DSM viscous diff wouldnt fit into the 2G DSM non LSD housing, as I performed the EVO swap into my own 1G housing and didnt see any large differences in the outside geometry of the diffs themselves. The only thing I can think of is that perhaps the housing of the viscous diff opposite the ring gear is larger than both the DSM Non LSD and EVO LSD and the casting of the 2G non LSD differential housing wont clear?? Id PM ACM to confirm.

I didn't personally discover that a VC diff won't in an open diff housing - it was actually Archer racing that found this out when they were assembling a VC diff from spares that I was buying from them.

I did personally discover that a Kaaz LSD will fit in a open diff housing, and TRE subsequently fitted one of his Max Lock Evo diffs into that exact same housing. The VC diff is much larger either a Kaaz or Evo clutch plate diff unit.

AYC wasn't available in the USA until the Evo X, so it's moot when searching for an 8/9 diff in the USA

Thanks for the info guys, looks like I may have an Evo 8 rear diff lined up but need to figure out axles. Since I already have the upgraded DSS rear axles (think they call them their stage 2, replacement outer & upgraded bar, attached to stock inner cup/tripod, for factory VC LSD), I'd like to keep them if possible.

So what I'm planning is going with evo8 inner cups. My question is, will my stock VC LSD inner tripod joint work with/in the evo8 cup? And also, if I got the evo8 inner tripod joint as well, will that fit my DSS axle? (stock 2g VC LSD axle size, just upgraded material)

Good question. When I was doing the swap on my 1G axles, I mic'd the height and diameters of both the 1G and EVO tripods and found them to be dimensionally identical, so I didnt swap the tripods, but it has been confirmed that the EVO tripods do fit the 1G VLSD axles, and as far as I know, the 1G and 2G VLSD and the inner axle cups on VLSD axles between 1G and 2G are the same. Scott McIntyre has DSS axles with EVO cups though, so he could likely confirm this.

Well I think I located some evo8 axles as well, so I guess I'll know for sure when they come. It sounds like staying with the DSM tripod or running the evo8 tripod might both be options, but I'll be sure to update this thread when I can verify.

Scott doesn't know all the details on his setup as he bought it second hand. I do now know that he has the same DSS axle kit (300M bar & outer CV) as me & is running evo8 cups. The only thing we don't know for sure is what tripods he's running. I'll have both, so can figure it out.

My plan for the LSD was to keep the stock plates for now, just swap them around to be the correct order. The diff is supposed to have 88K on it, I would assume the diff should still have lots of life left in it? What kind of mileage are they good for? I think I saw the OEM Mitsu replacement plates for what looked to be ~$70ea, that could sure add up for a rebuild That would make the ~$200 max lock 12 plate upgrade look pretty cheep.

The plates could be a bit worn, but the only main issue is that the side gear cover on the EVO dif is a weak, cast part that will fail if anyone has any fun with the car- I.E. clutch dumps, launches, high output etc. Long story short, when I pulled the EVO diff from the housing, the bearing on the cover side just fell right off the post. I did some digging, and found that TRE has the explaination and fix. Im including a link for you to look at HD SIDE COVER

Already aware of both of those links Will be inspecting the cover & probably looking to get the TRE cover (just have to figure out how to get one, being located in Canada (Jon won't ship here)). Are you running his cover on yours?

Ive got his cover, its a nice piece. I got it cause the bearing on that side just fell right off the post when I pulled the diff out . Personally, I wouldnt even risk running the stock cover given how weak it is cause if it goes out hard, it could wreck the diff, ring gear, pinion, axle cups and housing all in one shot. Kinda like getting a 4 spider center diff, good insurance especially if youre like most of us who like to play

Jon's a top notch guy. Im sure if you spoke with him on the phone you might talk him into shipping to Canada, or maybe you could have it shipped to a friend stateside and then your friend could ship it to you, though Im sure the shipping would be hideous...
