If anyone out there has tried this; How hard is it to fit an EVO V Intercoler, and how much of a difference did it make?

Hi just wanted to know if anyone has installed a evo 8 fmic on a 2g eclipse if so how much was the custom piping also is it a good upgrade from the stock smic or is it best just to get a greddy fmic :dsm:

I've heard a couple of people doing it. The consesus seems to be that it doesn't cool a whole lot better than the stock sidemount. I find it hard to believe myself, seeing as it has a larger cooling area, and gets more air to it in the front of the car. It depends on what turbo you're running and how much hot air is going through it.

Just because it has a larger cooling area doesn't mean it's more efficient, although because it has to cool a big16g sized turbo at 20psi from the facoty I would think i'd be better than the stock SMIC.

I would have to say that it is not worth it. If the evo 8 owners are selling them for $200 then you have to look at other opptions. First of all you have to figure that custom piping probably will cost you about the same no matter what ic you get. The evo 8 ic is not that large and a supra sidemount is just as efficient if not better and you don't have to get custom piping. Or you could go on ebay and get ether a core or the obx fmic which is a copy of the greddy fmic.

Hey guys my dad got a PWR FMIC for his evo 8 and passed his stocker to me for my 1g awd....if thats the case then its super worth it...but its true, for 200 bucks it may not be. Also considering the pipeing. Since the evo end tanks point down they are not the easiest thing to work from , but with the right planning it'll all go together. I'll have a write up once i finish mine.

I you get the evo8 fmic for free then you can't really beat that. However I still would only use it if you don't plan to upgrade to an even larger fmic later. As you said the endtanks for the evo8 fmic are of an odd design calling for some very custom ic pipes. These pipes more than likely would not be able to be used on another fmic. So you would be wasting a good deal of money still. You could sell it and buy a supra sidemount.

But like I said hey if you plan on keeping it then you can't beat a free part. :)

Well everyone, I have all of my parts together for my turbo install and with my income tax return I think it's time to buy my last piece- an FMIC. Here's the list of parts I have installed or ready to install:

-ported and clipped Evo 3 16G w/ internal wastegate
-ported Evo 3 exhaust manifold
-tubular O2 housing with external dump
-2.5" downpipe
-2.5" testpipe
-3" Thermal catback
-2G MAS
-Walboro 190 fuel pump (rewired)
-FIC 650cc injectors
-Dejon 2.75" intake pipe
-SAFC 2

*I also plan on running about a 75 shot of NOS on track day, so my ulitmate goal is about 360-400 whp with the NOS included.

Now I was looking at Slowboy's Street Spearco FMIC kit (http://www.slowboyracing.com/more.php?id=2130&) which has a 24x7.75x3.5 core. However, I was reading another thread about this kit and someone suggested that Slowboy felt this kit was only good for about 350 whp at most. I couldn't figure this out because it seems to be the same size core as both the RnR Street Spearco kit and the DSM Motorsports Street Spearco kit- and those sites suggest this sized core can support a 20G turbo or 550 whp. Would this core be too small for what I'm looking for? Also, if anyone can offer another kit that I haven't mentioned that may be ideal, I'm open to any advice. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the reply. Any opinions or suggestions from anyone else? I'd like to get as many points of view as I can before I make this purchase.

Being that I have a 1G I don't think the Greddy i/c is an option for me. Anyone else???

total waste of money. I bought this exact fmic on ebay for $200 shipped.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7962748963&category=33632

It is bar and plate style, very efficent. It looks to be the same exact fmic DSMmotorsports sells for $650. Got their car to 11.44 in the 1/4. You can piece together your own pipes for WAY less then buying a kit. You could probably buy the fmic, pipes, silicon couplers, and t-bolt clamps for less the $350. I think this fmic would be perfectly matched to a big 16g. If they can get their car into the 11's with it, you should be ok. Hope this helps

I just wanted to clarify for anyone else who was wondering the same thing I was when I started this thread...

Mark from Slowboy sent me a pm, and the SBR Street FMIC is capable of supporting over 550whp- he even told me he uses one on his 20G equipped 1G. Utilizing a Spearco core and supporting that much power seems like a pretty good deal for $799 to me.

So if diamondstar motorsports can run a 11.44 in their car with the same intercooler I linked for $179,wouldn't that be a pretty good deal too? I mean if you have $799 to blow out your ass for a kit go ahead, I was just trying to save you some cash. Yeah that SBR fmic will support 550whp,but you have a 16g which will never see more then 350whp, so IMO it would be overkill.

Thanks for the advice and the concern for my wallet. :thumb: I never said that the core you suggested wasn't a good deal or wasn't worth the money you spent- it seems great and I appreciated the suggestion. However, I have read nothing but great things about Spearco cores, while I've heard very mixed opinions on Ebay-style cores such as the JRCs and the one you gave me the link to. I also have read a lot of bad things about SSAutochrome, the quality of their products, and their customer service. It's simply a matter of personal preference as to what you want to spend your own money on. For me an intercooler is the staple of a properly setup car (aside from the turbo) and it can easily limit your tuning potential, so it's probably worth spending the extra money. You can call the SBR overkill for my case, but I'd look at it more as an investment considering that I know I'll be upgrading in the near future to a 20G or a T3/T4 and I KNOW that the Spearco core it utilizes will support both turbos I've mentioned without a problem. To go along with your argument though, how is the SBR core overkill at 550whp when the core you suggested is listed at 510hp capable- especially since I'll NEVER see more than 350whp with the turbo I have now- wouldn't your's be overkill too?

BTW...Diamond Star Motorsports put their car into the 11s using the 14B with a 7cm exhaust housing and Nitrous, which is a very respectable means of getting that time slip. But, your reasoning for using this core in my situation weakens since I'm using a turbo that flows the equivalent to an 18G with a larger upgrade in mind later- the flow of the E316G and the fact that I plan on upgrading vs the 14B (even with a larger exhaust housing, it is still limited by the compressor housing and its internals) is significant enough reasoning in my opinion to warrant using a more proven core.

Ok i have a 95 gst and a buddy of mine has his stock evo frontmount with all the piping. will this work for the eclipse? has anyone ever tried this?

It doensn't really matter what intercooler it is or what car its from, most intercoolers will fit dsm's. What you need is the charge piping. John

It works well for the EVO, so it should work great for you.
You shouldn't have many fitment issues either, and your intake temps will definetaly go down. remember its longer than your stock sidemount and it will be mounted right in the front, so theres no reason why it shouldn't help IMO.

AWDJDMTALON has one on his 1G talon, I believe he has a ported 18g with supporting mods and he loves it from what he tell us. but im sure you can PM him and ask him about it, he's a cool guy.

Looking for some pictures of an Evo VIII FMIC on a 1g. I really dont need to get flamed, just looking for some real info. Pics of the ic piping also would help a ton. And yes, I tried the search already. Thanks

Does anyone know where there is a how to for installing an evo fmic on a 2g? Or does anyone with a 2g have one installed already that they would like to comment about?

After searching all I can find is a bunch of "should I do this" , "is it worth it' and those types of opinion threads.

PLEASE do not comment if you dont personaly have this intercooler installed on your dsm or do not have any links to installs or first hand experience. Im not trying to sound like a prick but I dont really need a bunch of "I would just buy a front mount kit for your car and spend a lil more" or "its a shitty intercooler". My good friend is running 11s on his on 95* days and thats enough for me to try and mount it on my car! Plus its damn near free and has about 8,000 mi on it.
