Ideal surge tank design for DSM road racing

I'm not to keen on that design. The bottom plate looks overly heavy, the height proportion to width doesnt follow what I was taught and neither does the pickup locations. That thing looks like more bling bling than go fast
 
I'm new to this forum & am thus far impressed by the different discussions of the configurations of go fast goodies.. function taking the lead a bit over show. Awesome! I love seeing that. Glad I came across this forum =)

Nice to see Turbo XS being called out haha no offense though.. yeah that plate seems a little thick for the application. Could use a nice shaving.
 
I'd like to revive this thread to see if some of the engineer types might be able to answer some questions...

If going with a round design that will lay horizontally from front to back on the car, where should the inlets/outlets be located?

How thick should the tank wall be?

I think we may finally have a vendor willing to produce something for us.
 
Chris, I would have to do a little research but laying a tank down like that, without internal baffling, seems like a def. no no. On the other hand, it depends on the tank size and internal tapper (if any), kind of like the Magnus sheetmetal intake mani's, only with the tapper getting larger towards the rear of the car, if that makes sense. I'm dead tired right now....

As for in's and out's, I'm not with it enough for that, I'd probably give the wrong info, which would be worse then no info as we all know.

AMS sells their surge tank for the Evo, which is to be mounted horizontally - and they use it in road racing. It's a square design, but it' still horizontal. I'm not sure a round design would be much different or would require any more baffling than a square design.

Before any knee-jerk reactions come I better say it can be mounted vertically (not sure why you'd want to mount it horizontally but it's an option).

I think this is going to be my surge tank solution, going in the engine bay where my battery used to be.

Haven't made any progress on this yet. This looks like a nice solution. I wanted to mount it horizontally in the rear next to the tank under the car. Would make it easier for me and would prevent even more added weight to the front, keeping my engine bay less cluttered. I'll be considering this.
 
I called 034. The dimension of the 034 fuel surge tank is 4" diameter and 9.5" tall without fittings. With fittings I estimate it at about 11.5" tall. I'm hoping to put it above my lowered battery (JMF battery tray) but I don't know if it will have enough room. I don't have my car as it's getting its engine swapped but will check it when I get the car back hopefully tomorrow. If it doesn't fit I may have a shop lower my battery further as I think there's still space between the JMF small battery tray and the front subframe, but not sure.
 
Stopped by the shop that's swapping in my new engine and took a look around my empty engine bay. No way this will fit vertically above my JMF battery in its lowered position. Did notice lots of free space behind the block and so this might fit down there over the subframe. However I'm not keen on this as it makes maintenance on it difficult. I may look at mounting my battery even lower than the JMF tray sits, as I thnk there's still a bit more room below it to the subframe. Otherwise maybe I just have to move the battery to the trunk and put these thing in its place.
