you are correct,it;s not an 02 housing... but you should be proud and don't know why do ya?? it's because most of the world outside the DSM community doens't know what an "02 housing" is... our small market niche of buyers are the ones who are lucky enough to get their downpipes split into two pieces both costing several hundred dollars each where most of the rest of the world just knows this part as a single piece called the down pipe... because mitsu incorporated the o2 sensor into a turndown attachment on the back of the turbine housing and named it an "oxygen sensor housing" combines with the import worlds desire for pure bolt on parts in leu of changing the basic setup of one small portion of exhaust or the knowledge of many young enthusiasts lacking the experience to know how to just have an exhaust shop make what they needed instead of paying bookoo dollars for everything to bolt directly up right out of the mail box.

It's been a sad and soetimes commical thing to watch over the last 14 years or so as these cars really became a mainstream tuner car with prices dropping where younger audiences could afford to bu, plate and build them.. But in the end this was like a fat girl eating because of depression type of viciouse circle, the dsm community on it's own will became sort of self trapped into buying and relying on these "02 housings" from a time when there wasn't a lot of turbo options on our cars and places made "down pipes" that bolted to MHI turbos only.., so when new and different turbo options were mocked up and bolted on and the old exhausts didn't mate up or even reach, it sounded better for a vendor to say it was "because you don't have the special 02 housing to make it fit" instead of explaining this long drawn out part of turbo fhistory about the "mythical o2 housing" And how mitsu/MHI almost invented it in a way, and how people were willing to spend money on a piece of metal under a foot long that cost as much as the entire piece that went from cat converter to turbo the first time.. so of course if people will pay the fare of a 400 mile bus ride just for the cab to get to the bus terminal so to speak, why not let them??


Now the logic of money may be argued, as well as the exact first origina of an o2 sensor in an internal gate backing plate for a turbine housing, but in the end it will boil down to the same bowl of soup, the one that says "you didn't really need this part, it was just easy to sell it to you so we did"

although being silly in nature, i'm seriouse.. look up 02 housings for other things turbo outside of the world of mitsubishi (like trucks, diesel tractors, early 80's turbo cars, and even modern turbo cars that aren't based in the spoirt compact scene and you will rarely find the bigfoot known as "o2 housing" and MAYBE you'll find it in subaru, but if so it's the same logic as to why you find it in DSM..they are like santa they exist only to fill a need for part to have a "name" and to give makers of exhausts one more fancy part to sell... ever notice that you can't find other types of turbos with "o2 housings"???

If there's any proof that an o2 housing is in fact a required or needed part, then i need to figure out how the hell my cart has been on the road all these years with variouse turbos and never had one.. I just put the o2 sensor in the down pipe (or is it that i have a HUGE 02 housing and am missing my down pipe????

please no one take offense i don't mean this that way at all... i just feel like 02 housings should have a commercial like the shamwow, to really be effectively sold and i'm just trying to bring that level of energy to the table

Downpipe is all one piece.. Id like to go with some kind of v-band o2 housing to dp this year if I have the funds.

crash. I would use a short straight piece where that tack is by the oil pan on the front. then put a flex section (SS braided 3")right behind the oil pan..when i've rab t3 turbine on cast mani with no flex i split donw pipes like banana's get one through APW for about 50 bucks in all stainless (think mine was 46 dollars this year). or get them in mild steel cheaper, but get stainless as the mild willgo fast. and never let the flex hang the flange and gate piping at too much angle when taking the car apart i've seen it shrink up the inside braid on a vibrant flext down to 1" ID and still 3" OD looked fine.


Welds will improve, either turn the wire speed down or go slower burning the wire in smoother. I use my hobart on setting 1 or 2(2 i keep weld blasts short or it burns through)1 i use .024 wire and a feed of 35or so..those will help if you need some bases to start at.if you have a belt and disk sander (got mine for 14 bucks at garage sale) it will go a Long wqay towards helping you match but welds...mine is priceless even with a decently setup cheap bandsaw

Honest truth right there..... A piece of piping that is so short and small cost so much....not bashing any vendors on here but I paid almost 600 for a ss wg combo....
Even though I was able to buy a dp test pipe and even a catback still about 20 less than the 2 housing... With all that was roughly 7 flanges n1 style muffler and a ss flex section.... But o well I'll pay it due to no time welding ability

I made this one for the 4 bolt .63 AR T3 housing. It's 2.5" and I have a Turbonetics mani flanged off the #1 runner.

I recently made a 3" Vband one for the .70 AR BEP that I run now.

Thanks for the tips Glenn! I tried turning down the settings but just couldnt get things just right.. I did keep burning through, had to keep tacking it until I made it all the way around. I DD'd the car with this whole set up this past summer and havent had an issue with it cracking or anything.. Solid mounts also help keeping engine torque down!

Crash, it takes a LOT of practice and a really thin autobody wire (.024") at your lowest setting to be able to seam up exhaust without burnthough on a MIG with mild steel.. I litterally do the same as you, I stich weld it with the stiches being about 1/2 to 3/4 inch in length.. now on stainless and with a TIG i can go as far as i can reach but MIG although simple and effective, the way they operate with no operator control to adjust amps during the weld you will always have to use technique and judgement on stuff like that to stitch it all together

I love seeing the work other people put in by making or modifying parts on their own.. I think the things that both make me ;laugh and a sad "what has the world come to" kind of feeling, are those threads where people build a sick ass car and everything in it was "bought", or even where they bought the parts but didn't do a shread of work themselves.. ( there was a thread that's closed where i guy wan'ted donatiopns to build his car and although locked down i went to the "beggars page" and wrote abook on how i built my car starting from an 11 dollars an hour job, and how i paid to go learn what i did at majestic turbo (aprenticvehsips as we know aren't paying and it cost me to go there and stay, but i did it on my vacation...)

in the same category are those threads where people are complaining that their bolt on FMIC kit has a few small pieces that don't "bolt on" to a perfect fit with no issues right out of the box and they say how the kit is junk...well all that know are aware that there's too many variable from one car ot the next to even expect a flawless bolt on FMIC kit, and at the price of the bolt on kits anyway, you would think people would be driven to learn to piece together something on their own..

not that i feel superior or think bad of people who buy and bolt on parts with no work to make them fit, but to me part of the entire experience is learning to wrench, problem solve and persevere tpo make something into a final finished product... I honestly wouldn't enjoy or respect myself really if i had other people doing the work for me and all i did was throw money in... I've always done my won work unless it's something i didn't know how to do like building a race trans which now i even have a damn good grasp on that and have done my own this year (huge thanks to TIm z) but to all you guys here who show your work and say "welds aren't that great" i want you to be proud, pretty weld or not because ytou've done what most won't dare to and you've put your faith in it to get you around safely. and those of you that are doing this and are age 22-23 or less, i give you extra respect for growing up in a generation of some of the laziest kids i've ever seen where things are handed to them for either crying or so they don't go \destroy something benin mad that the workd isn't handed to them on a plate... you are the type of people who will succeed no matter what and those who also have enough of my resopect that anything i know i'll gladly teach you to the best of my ability for no other financial compensation than just buy the materials that you'd use while learning on my machines (and one last prereq...take pride in everything you do and you will always have something to be proud of )

people are showing some nice work on here, makes me smile to see so many making thier own parts.. I know a lot of people think i get mad to see others doing stuff that i offer to do for others to make money but when it comes dfown to it, I'really like to see people with the drive and desire to learn how to fab themselves .. it's like when i do soething for some one, I HATE people who want o sit there and watch, but those with a true interest in knowuing how, I will always be the one to teach the trade and have a TIG torch adnd footpedal at their control from day one

I do have a beautiful woman ive been with 4 years now and i probably owe her an engagement ring by now . But I'm in it for building cages an exhaust manifolds, exhaust setups and all the fun stuff maybe even one day a tube chassis 4g63 go kart this is my favorite platform and I've worked on my dsm that I've only owned for 2 years very hard. And it's the first car ive ever worked on mechanically! And ive learned so much. Warms my heart to hear such kind words

i've found that anything you are passionate about, if you keep doing it and keep promoting yourself (not shameless plugs but let people know you can save them money or fix their parts, put it on resume's etc...) But as long as you stick with it and your love of doing it shos in your work then you WILL eventually end up doing it for a full or part time living wether your self employed, doing side jobs or get hired in a shop to do therwork (nothings better than self employment for pride, almost everything else is better as far as dollars per hour return goes ) But i really didn't know what i wanted to do for a living until about 6 years ago, and i owned a constructioncompany, but metal working was my hobby... once doctos started making me work less at construction i found that i could weld, machine and fab for endless amounts of time until pain made me stop..that's when i knew my hobby needed to be my job... now, sadly i can barely do it for a hobby due to pain, but i still manage to get reason enough fixing something or making siomething for some one to end up in th shop an hour or two a week

Well said Glenn!! I am also 23 and by no means "hate" my welds. I just havent had much experience welding.. Hell the first time I ever welded (besides a small course in high school) was when I had to make my exhaust for my awd swap.. Didnt care how it looked just that it worked! I would LOVE to do custom fab stuff for ever!! Making manifolds, cages, exhausts, crazy turbo set ups for v8s etc.. Costs money to play though. haha. But definitely once I get the money I will be buying a decent TIG to teach myself. Ive watched tons of wiki's and helpful tip videos so right now alls I need is the machine and seat time!

I agree with you that kids now days are just lazy as fvck. It just blows my mind. These kids have no ambition to do anything for themselves. Unless you are within my close group of friends or I know you're good with cars, I wont let you work on my car! Id just rather know that something is done to my expectations, and if it breaks or messes up than its on me and I have nobody to blame!

How did your alternator hold up with that o2 housing? Did you do anything to try and reduce the heat on the alternator? Custom heat shield, ceramic coating, etc...

I know youre asking the OP, but the single best way to preserve alternators that i have found so far is to swap to a GM unit.. Before i tried most everything and the bests thin was to header wrap the DP. Other than that, even wihtout heat, it never took more than some oil from a popped dipstick or dried out valve cover gasket to start them failing, i honestly believe that they don't like high RPM as i would notice a droip in volts after every tuning session, i litterally went through 3 in one year, that's how i was motivated to go saturn swap on mine and haven't needed but one swap since

Really can't say enough good things about this "down pipe" setup. I have small 2.5" mandrel bent crappy flowing exhaust system. Then I run resonator and nice quiet muffler for daily driving. Honestly If I had a factory exhaust system handy I would have ran that instead.

Then when I want some power I just open the dump. Car literally picked up 3mph with the dump open at the track. It's a night and day difference. I have had issues with motors on these electric dumps failing over time. When that happens I'll put a wastegate actuator setup on the dump and have it open while in boost.

Id have to agree with Glenn here. I learned this by my friends mistakes. Watching them fry alternators from heat or high revving. I never had any issues with a stock location 3'' exhaust ie Megan downpipe. However with my Holset set up and how close my o2 housing is to my alternator I HAD to wrap it. Even thought about doing the relocation just for reassurance. Now, my buddy Kenny hasnt had any issues with overheating his alternator on his s366 or his new 6766 set up yet however he has noticed a significant voltage drop during pulls like Glenn stated. He is going to do the saturn alt swap this down season. I will probably end up making that switch sometime in the future, hope it isnt THAT soon though. Dont really plan on revving past 8k for a while!

Im going to revive this thread. While there is a bunch of info about welding and pictures of these o2 housing. There isnt much about how to come up with it. Im wondering are you making certain degree pie cuts and what degree?

Bsfab I cant find, punishment doesnt make them now. So I am going to try and fab my own. I just cant seem to find a certain degree to cut each pie to.
