as the question says. How hard is it. Could i do it with just rebuilt block bored .020 over and rebuilt head with stage one porting. and obx cams? what else would i need on that head and block to get a lot of horsepower cheap.

I think you are going to need a lot more than that to hit 250. You are gonna need some way to tune intake exhaust fuel. What you are looking at is good for a dd but I don't think so for 250. It would be easier if you just go boost.

You are not going to be able to make a lot of horsepower in N/A form and keep it cheap.

What's "cheap?" ROFL

You're going to have a hard time hitting that for cheap. You'll need higher compression pistons as well as a lot more supporting mods. For the price you could probably build a pretty crazy turboed 420a.

The current record for an n/a 420a is about 213whp.
Good luck with your goal.

Easy....according to the dumbass who came into my workplace last summer with his '97 RS that was puking oil, out of coolant, and had a massive leak at his eBay header. He claimed he had just installed that engine which is pushing 300 at the wheels.

So an OEM rebuild on the block, and Stage 1 porting to the head....whatever the hell that means.

Boring .020" adds no noticeable power increase- the fact that the cylinders will be straight and the rings sealing at 100% will add more power than an overbore the thickness of four sheets of notebook paper.

So basically you're looking to add 100 horses to a stock 4-cylinder engine with the addition of cams. Good luck with that one.

A turbocharger.

To answer your question, it will be very hard. It's cool and all to try and be different than everyone else but it is going to cost a lot of money to get anywhere near that horspower level and then you will still be getting beat by lightly modded anything else. Definitely not worth it.....unless your loaded. Then who cares, go for it.

LOL... Wow.

And OP,

Cheap and 250hp on an N/T 420 don't go together. I'm actually kind of curious as to why even try something like that, you'd get alot more horses at that cost if you'd put a turbo on. I don't know, it's just me but I wouldn't waste my time on it.

And to answer your question, you'll need wayyyyy more than what you've mentioned.

If you are up to the task of building up a non-turbo, by all means go for it. But like everyone here says, skipping the headaches and going straight for a factory turbocharged model may make more sense.

420a 250hp??

not cheap at all.. maybe if the block was built for high compression, and if we dsm'er do have such things as an individual throttle bodies with velocity stacks and fine tuned, then by all means go for it.. isnt CHEAp though :nono:

haha seriously i think youll run faster with a honda na built and cost less money LOL

but seriously im over hondas haha

Yea you can make 250 n/a power, If your the first to build a custom stroker kit with flat top pistons and you mill the head out to get a higher compression than 12. After you acheive that impossible feat you have to do a full head build with hellatious cams. Then you go spray and a good tune. Not saying it's impossible but the man currently holding the na record hit 213 with a ton of work. And I mean a ton. But I've never been a dream killer, so I say do your research and go for it. Good luck man and don't give up on the 420a. It's a great motor, it just doesn't get the attention it deserves compared to the 4g63.

Yes recognition! To the OP look at my mods, and look at my HP. I'm just now starting to get to some good numbers. Something for you to consider if you really want to go this route.

Some of this info is correct :p. Spray eliminates you from NA technically. If you include spray, 250 would be super easy to hit

Also the world record is 218, i just don't think MB has updated his info. And I have confidence in MB hitting 250 eventually, After all he is at 218 and going to go from 12.5-16.0 comp and upgrading to ITB's, that in itself should get him close.

With that being said, that is the world record and MB's car isn't a DD, basically strictly strip. On top of that, he did a TON of research, lot of time and work. I guess you could say it was "kind of" cheap (depends what one considers cheap), but that's also taking into account that he does probably 75-90% of his own work, which not to be rude, if you are on here asking questions like this you probably cant, meaning you are gonna spend 2-3x as much with paying a shop (believe me I know).

I have a thread on 2GNT, about my new build, I am hoping to get close to 200whp and run 13's(13.99) in a DD. Despite everything I have (mods/money/knowledge/research) Even I think it's a super high up there goal to get to. But hey, I am down for the challenge.

Once again OP not to degrade you, but I don't think you are, mainly because of you wanting to get "a lot of HP cheap". I just think you should know what you are getting yourself into. Personally I feel you should get some low to moderate mods and maybe turbocharge and you will be happy. Once again I don't mean to demean you in any way, I would love some more competition in the 420a NA scene besides Colby and a few others ;) Just know what you are getting yourself into

Please correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Colby running a 2.4L or a 2.2 stroker or something. To the OP please research the power section on 2gnt.com (I can send you a link) before verbalizing your goals on a forum. Otherwise it kinda makes us N/T guys look bad. It's good that you want to build up your car and I give you props for that but it's better to read and learn then post.

It's not listed in his profile, and when i saw it in August I was 90% sure it wasn't stroked, but I am going off memory so there can always be error in that.

Alright how much horse do you think ill get out of block bored .040 over and stage 1 porting on a head. stage 1 cams, cold air intake, catback system?

Bored over isn't going to make any noticeable increase in power. You will gain a bit of power with cams and a port job if you have something to tune with. CAI and exhaust are going to make is sound faster.

You aren't going to make 200whp with those mods though.

Why do you want to stay n/a so bad? If you want to make power easily and cheaply, turbo it. You can make ~200bhp @ 8psi on a common t3 50 trim, for around $1k.

So you're saying because it has a 420a and it doesn't have a 4g63 under the hood, it cant possibly make 250 hp? ROFL

From the questions this guy is asking NO he will NEVER make 250 hp unless he adds some form of F/I. The amount of cash it would take to get to those power levels N/A are a lot higher then most can afford on this forum. And even if some form of F/I was added it will most likely be junk ebay parts.

I know there are some impressive N/A DSM's out there but they are few and rare. I'm also NOT saying you can't make power on a 420a. Any motor, etc..can make good power if the right parts are there. Back around 2000 my N/A Mazda Mx-6 (KLDE/ZE mix) went 13.5 @ 102 mph with 196 whp (DynoJet).

But hell what do I know.

I agree with you, at with the posts the OP is making i find it to be extremely unlikely that he will obtain 250 WHP while staying N/A. Now with the help of forced induction, yes it is possible, but not probable. I misunderstood your comment, thinking it was turning into another "the 4g63 is superior to the 420a and is the only thing worth modding" comment, my bad.

It's all good.

Man what's the fun in having big power if you don't know how you got it? Anyone can buy a z28 and experience power but not everyone can build it. if you want cheap speed google how to build a turbo kit or under 1000, it'll be cheaper than what you listed earlier and you can get the speed you want. Just go the turbo route and save yourself the hassle. And tell anyone trying to convince you to get a turbo model to piss off.
