I don't want to take away from Greg's upcoming commentary, So I'll just say, yes they dyno'd prior to putting the car on the track today.:thumb:
Damn you, that was a teaser post. :p

Those of us with...ahem..."similar setups"...are VERY curious about what that torque curve looks like. :D

think 500(x^1/2)

I know the car is capable of putting down some monster numbers, but you have to remember that you can't push things quite as hard on a road course as you do on a drag strip. If I had to guess I'd say he's set it comfortably in the 400-500hp range so its not running on the ragged edge of crazy but effortlessly making some serious power to prolong the entire setup.

Remember in order to finish first, you first must finish.

Thats awsome greg you got some new track time on the motor and the car this year. Lets hear some details from you and mitch on here. It was nice weather here in chicago for the first time in 5 months. It got to 65 today saturday and sunny no rain yet..
Like the other guys said big HP numbers are not what I would be worryed about on a road race motor its all reliability. What kind of boost do you plan on running???

i'm gonna say close to 600 :p
also note that the graph of x^2 isnt asomtotic (sp?) at 1, so 500 times that is a pretty big number around 7000 rpms and higher. not that its low below that, hehehe. I just can't wait to hear these numbers and see those graphs.

I'm curious to see how the new frontmount affects cooling. :talon:

I'm thrashed and not gonna say another word until the commentary.

Ok here's the teaser 400 hp @ 12-PSI

Night-night :boring:

I hope you have nightmares for not giving an update sooner.

well thats not nice!!

But seriously... its 5:26 in the morning, I'm on page 1 of 10 for a paper thats due in 4 hours....

an update would have been nice. probably not nice for my grade, but nice for the gearhead side of me.

Sweet! 400 ponies ought to wake those vettes up :rocks: I just found a bunch of oxidation holes in my intercooler, under the upper hose overlap. :notgood: Good thing I'm on good terms with our welder. I can't believe it didn't run like garbage. Well maybe it'll run even better now! :sneaky: :talon:

Yes, Greg. No more posts until you put up the REAL THING.

There are probably 3,000 wannabee racers living vicariously through you. They all wish THEY could be out there running their DSMs on the track, so they wait breathlessly for your next posting. You are their hero! I think it's kind of sick, actually.

Especially since I am one of them. Sometimes I don't think I am ever going to get the blue Eclipse running again. It just sits there, waiting for parts, whilst I await your next post.

So, speaking for 3,000 other wannabees, WHAT HAPPENED???

Rich

This is my car right now, so reading Greg's stories and bench racing are all I have until the weather warms up and all my parts arrive. :D I'll be wannabe #2998.

(So much work left to do...ugh. And a 2-3 week backorder on the fuel cell on top of it...)

Aurora, Ill, eh? Gonna make it to Blackhawk Farms in April?
IF we get my car running, and IF I can get it broke in, and IF I can get all the nitpick stuff done (welding in door bars, etc.), I hope to be there. We probably won't be able to race it, but I'll do the HPDE, get my checkout ride for my comp license, and find out all the things I need to fix to pass tech for the races.

I don't see a cage in that gutted interior. In fact, the only real mod I saw was the big FMIC. Tell us more about your plans and mods whilst we await Greg.

Probably not, at this rate (I really wanted to, but there's just not enough hours in the day for both work and play). Right now, I'm just shooting to have it rolling under it's own power for the Shootout in August. ;)

Heh, the FMIC was just there for test-fitting; I need to get that off and back on the shelf before I accidently put something through it (what can I say, I'm clumsy). ;) Honestly, there's not much of anything on the car right now, and there's still more to strip/cut out of it. :p

The main details: 9:1 2.4L (ala Mitch) along with oil cooler and accusump; worked-over head (again, ala Mitch) with oversize valves, dual springs, and FP3 cams; FP 3052 turbo; a fuel system that should cheerfully support the turbo I'll probably eventually end up running on this car (ATL fuel cell feeding two Bosch -044 pumps, larger lines, replaced rail, etc). There's a bunch of minor stuff in there too, but that's the gist of it.

DSMLink for fuel management, AEM wideband, EBC, some other electronic stuff I can't remember right now. ;)

Twin-disc clutch/chromoly flywheel, but otherwise stock drivetrain (yes, I'm aware that I'll probably destroy fourth gear if I really get on it), mainly due to finances. Transmission work will probably be done next winter. Oh, and new wheels and tires at some point this spring; the autocrosser in me will probably end up buying a set of 255/40/17 Kumho Ecsta MXs and stretching them to fit on a 17x9 +35ish wheel (which should hopefully keep me from making my wheel bearings a regular maintenance item).

Suspension: practically nothing done (although I may take the opportunity to at least put a larger rear sway bar on the car, while everything is out of the way). :( Again, finances. I suspect later this year, a set of Konis and Ground Controls will end up going on the car, along with the slow replacement of most of the bushings with poly. I wish DG's coilover/upper hat setup was still available, that's what I was holding out for. :p

The cage...ugh. I finally broke down and bought a tig welder, so we MIGHT see a cage go in before I put it all back together, but that's going to be a whole lot of work for a newbie welder. I have plenty of other fabrication that needs to be done too; rear floor pan (for the cell), exhaust, a bunch of little baffling projects for the front-end, etc. And then there's Erica's car, which needs work this year too. Hmm. Maybe I'll make Erica fab up the cage. ;)

This year's plans for the car: fun street car (mostly full interior, A/C, power steering, stereo, etc...all still there) that I can take to an autocross, an HPDE, or a drag event, and have a good time at all three; I really don't care how I get classed, but I've had my head in four different rulebooks over the last few months trying to make sure I can at least pass tech at whatever track I decide to go to. (You can take this to mean that I'm not chasing a win at anything; I just enjoy the hell out of modifying this car, and seeing the results at the track.)

Next year, I may put a significantly larger turbo on the car and dedicate it primarily to drag racing (we have a WRX Wagon that I'm suspecting will become the new ESP autocrosser, and will probably do fine at an HPDE with some decent pads), but that's if I'm not happy with the setup of the car after a season of driving it regularly. (Basically, if it's no longer fun on the street, out come the amenities, and on goes the GT42R. ;))

Whew, that was longer than I planned.

I see James Chen has the 350z out this year, and it also looks like our boy qualified 4th :thumb: , also looks like the snow stayed away.

so is my 600hp a good guess?? :p btw are you thinking of coming to road america greg??? If so, I'll see about getting a 4g63t to drop in my car for that weekend....hehehe, i would have asked in your newest tread, but I do not want to hijack it or get "off" topic so :p next time try spinning down the straight-away at 100mph with traffic all around...HAHA been there done that but i was doing 65mph at my track with cars everywhere and a big wall.... had her on 2 wheels going sideways the length of the straight....FUN STUFF

I never care about going off topic dude... my wife says my whole way of life is kind of off topic...

The motor would easily do 600hp, but then I'd probably have to add another couple of thousand pounds to it to keep it on the road.

As far as Road America goes, it's like football, I race one race at a time:p
