I put a gates blue belt on my 2g roughly 6 months ago and after the install I dont remember hearing any noises. Fast forward a few months and I started noticeing a very slight, but distinct whine similar to that of an over-tensioned timing belt during a cold start, when the car has sit for a good while (1hr or more). It also only seems to do it for maybe 10-15 secs after startup, then it's gone and never heard again at any engine speed or load (until it sits)...Ive probably put 2000 miles on the car since I started hearing it and it hasn't gotten worse or changed pitch at all for that matter but recently I've been more and more curious about it. Last night I took my upper cover off and loosened the mid cover to have a quick look and the belt is nowhere close to guitar string tight, defiantly feels like normal deflection so I'm lead to ask if anyone else has ever had this happen or maybe somthing similar? Not sure if it's a property of the belt but I doubt it. Regardless, I will end up tearing into it to have a look some time soon but I figured I'd ask... Thanks for any input

Did you confirm the tensioner wss properly set? Usually after it sits for 15min once timing is set. You would check the grenade pin hole and see if the pin slides in and out freely. There's actually a proper measurement you can take, the grenade pin thing is just faster LOL. Might wanna double check that!

I let it set, measured the gap with a drill bit and by sliding the pin in. I've done about 8 tbelts on 4g63s the same way between mine and my buddies dsms and never had any issue or weird sounds like this. As for the oil pump I'll have to keep my eyes peeled, I felt a good amount of deflection in the belt but it's still a possibility.

The inverse is also true. Too much deflection means the belt is a little loose. It could slip until friction heats it up enough to stick.

Well I got to digging in and got a better view....everything still looks perfect. Belt tension is great, the Granade pin still goes back in and the the tensioner isn't leaking...im going to have another look before I put it back together but it's not anything obvious at this point.

No I didn't take it that far down tonight, I did the belt a total of probably 3k miles ago 2k of those with the sound at cold start... Anyways I do remember inspecting the arm, it had no play when Installed but there was a tiny pit where the pin sits. If I had to take an educated guess I would guess it was only a few thousandths of an inch deep though.
