Funny situation, I have a real EVO3 turbo and an Ebay 16g turbo..

Well, I picked up a brand spanking new ebay evo3/16g turbo setup from a local here for $125 bucks the other day. But I also have a real one en route that I got for a good price. What do you guys think I should do here? You want comparison pics of the turbos side by side, comparison vids? Do you want me to install the ebay one and see how long it runs and how well it runs, then if it blows to install the real MHI Evo3? Throw me some ideas. I'll try to entertain them.

ADDITION TO THE THREAD:

With all due respect here. I think a lot of people on both sides are being HEAVILY MISLEAD by others. The MHI turbo with the install kit will in NO WAY cost you only $75 more then the ebay setup. Where is everyone getting their numbers from? The ebay turbos with the install kit and an ebay j pipe will cost you under $300. The MHI turbo's with the same wil cost you $700+

Guys please get your numbers straight here. I am not a cheapskate or a poor starving college student. If you look at the pictures- I have a relatively new MHI turbo in the pictures right next to the ebay turbo and both are mine. I'm not doing this to save a couple of bucks but to prove a theory we have.

One warning I will put in caps here for those who may buy an ebay turbo and ebay install kit.

90% OF THE BOLTS, STUDS, ETC ON THE EBAY TURBO INSTALL KITS ARE THE INCORRECT SIZE. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING EBAY INSTALL KITS. IF IT DOESNT' THREAD IN HALFWAY WITH YOUR FINGERS- IT IS THE WRONG SIZE, HEED MY WARNING
 
Man, it only cost a few hundred more to get a real turbo. I dont see why people keep questioning these ebay turbos when over 75% of people running them have issues.

Im running 30+psi(dont know how much since boost gauge stops) and have had it for over 2 years. Turbo has no shaft play at all. I know someone running a 16g with a welded wastegate and making 45psi and still no shaft play.
 
30+ psi?? what kind of turbo are you running? & the reason we are "questioning" ebay turbos is because we dont have the money to build out the internals of our motor to RUN 30 psi. Get it? This here is a limited money issue thread via ebay turbos is the TOPIC.

It is possible to run 30+psi max without building your engine. You just have to be smart about parts selection and know what you're doing tuning wise.

If you have a 6-bolt, use a smaller turbo and can tune well, you can peak over 30psi and still not hit the stress limit of the engine internals. I seriously doubt that Jason is holding 30+ to redline with a 16G, he has a 6-bolt swap and he is tuning on E85.
 
o0o0o0o0o okay. Thanks for clearing that up. Im glad my 7 bolt engine can atleast get 20 PSI with the correct supporting mods. But on the other hand of EBAY TURBO's I emailed the ssautochrome about that "16g" turbo... This was his response to my questions:

This is an aftermarket product. It can produce up to about 14-16psi it
does come with a 30 day warranty. I have not heard anything about our
bolts ,but if you run into some issues let us know ASAP.

Even tho it looks good.... Im considering Spending the $600 for a genuwine Evo3 16g turbo now.
 
The wastegate needs adjusting on the ebay turbo. Thats the only mechanical problem i have seen and heard about. I actually helped my neighbor adjust his ebay turbo to get the wastegate to open under boost. After the adjustments the trubo was fenomenol (SP) then i ordered mine the next day :] +1 ebay!
 
This was an awesome thread until it came to a screaching hult. :( I even took the hour to read the whole thing!!!

Wish there was some kind of bottom line on the Ebay 16g. Good or bad was all I was looking for.

Now that I have a PR FMIC that I can't bolt up to my T-25 without a lot of custom pipe work, I guess I'll have to shell out the $600 for a true Evo III 16G from some company with a good rep. Someone shoot me please! haha.

/\ Bottom line is do you have the extra cash to buy a new turbo if the ebay one you buy craps out? If the answer is yes, then just use the extra cash to buy a real 16g. If the answer is no, then save up to buy a real 16g. You get it?
 
My cousin bought a used fake evo3 16g for 80 bucks from a kid in town, and he's been running it for almost a year. He was at 20psi at first and since last fall he's been at 24psi. It spools slower than my real evo3 16g, but that's about it. He's at 321 awhp / 347 torque. All he has is: boost controller, turbo, j-pipe, intercooler piping (homemade), (stock SMIC), 680 injectors, 255hp fuel pump, exhaust, ARP head studs, E85, EPROM tuning by me.

His is the one that has the plate on the compressor housing that is stamped, not the one with Evo III GT cast into it. There seems to be 2-3 different ones on ebay.
 
There are A LOT of "what if's" in this thread. Most of those who are doubting the ebay turbo have no idea what constitutes a properly working turbo. I didn't back then either but have since read up and rebuilt a few and now understand the VERY SIMPLE mechanics. The kid that purchased the car in this thread is still driving on the ebay turbo- he's been running at 19 psi for over a year and a half now and he abuses it. The car is running fine now (after the hg install) and he claims no shaft play yet. There is ONLY ONE thing that I can tell you to doubt w/the ebay turbos and it's this:

QUALITY CONTROL

You really have no idea what you're getting. But this forum and the OTHER FORUM are full of people who like to post their negative experiences with parts. You have high end parts that are constantly being dogged. I have only seen a handful of negatives on ebay turbos, most of which are "my friend this or my cousins friend blah". I have run ebay turbo's on Supra's w/no issues- they still do it regularly and have minor issues from time to time. If they run them on Supras- why does the DSM crowd doubt them so much?

You can't lose at $200- take the chance and see what happens. I know 2 others that are running ebay turbo's on their dsm's right now and are happy with them.

I have a new gsx now and may go w/another ebay turbo (even thou i have a perfectly working mitsu 16g here). I will keep you updated if I go ebay again.

The reason I read into this thread is because I have to mate a T-25 with a FMIC from PR. I really didn't want to spend $650 right now on a new turbo, just so the j-pipe will work.... Butl I found out that Extreme Turbo Systems makes a V pipe that brings the outlet from the turbo back over to the drivers side IC pipe above the cross-member. I haven't ordered it yet because I want to know about their rediculous shipping charges, but hopefully it will get the job done and last until I have more money.

I will still keep this info on the ebay 16g in the back of my mind when ready to upgrade turbos though.

The stock 2g t25 runs at 12 pee es eye. . . Get it now?

Yea, he got temporarily banned on the 6th for showing a mod attitude in defense of the ebay wonder on his car. . . Beat a built turbo'd h22 and he runs only 15pee es eye. Attitude adjustment didn't take. . . But he doesn't remember he said he was running 20psi the day he go banned.

yes i did run 20psi but this is my everyday car so i turned it down. and also u don't have to get mad and dis people. your suppose to be here to help right? well sorry if i offended you
 
Yes, yes, I do have to get irritated with the misinformation and misdirection (stating a turbo with a compressor map close to 50lb/min but being boosted at 15psi has proven itself durable) enough to stand up and show from what source such statements come. That's part of helping the community. . . Settle down. Reset yourself. And, start over assuming you know nothing when you first begin associating with folks that have been building the subject platform far longer than you (or even me, for that matter). Admit that you're new, and you'll stop with the silly outdated interjections and ill advice.

your right ive only owned 2 dsm in my life.. but ive been building motor for a while.
 
Have to admit. I'm glad I found this thread. It was a great read and a lot of information was what I was looking for. Sad it ended suddenly
