I personally am looking to do some weight reduction while retaining the quiet/smooth ride, and still having a spare so I can go on the highway without getting flatbedded home.

heres some of my ideas, just normal of course.

CF hood
Ditch all of my stereo and just get upgraded 6x9, 5.25, and 3.5's hooked to the factory amp/deck.
CF Hatch<<<Anyone make one for us?
CF Spoiler<<Anyone make it?
Dimple Drilled/Slotted Rotors

What else is there? I dont wanna tear out all the sound deadening or the spare tire.

hey everyone well just wanted to add my contribution to here

credit everything to the guys on the goodwill car for giving me tips

i cut out the rear floor (where the spare is) and replaced with 1/8" aluminum
removed everything under the dash (hvac related)
all the padding on the dash
removed the carpet padding and all the tar underneath
firewall padding
door supports were cut out and plastic on the door is replaced with 1/8" aluminum
all ac parts are gone including condensor
radiator replaced with one from a geo metro
back seats
rear windshield wiper assembly
all audio equipment is removable for when i go track (except deck it stays in)
the rear side windows are replaced with 1/8" lexan
balance shafts removed
emissions removed
ac fan removed
front bumper support removed
rear bumper support removed
exhaust from downpipe back is one straight piece that goes directly under the tank and out the center
rear bumper is cut up
headlights are gone and replaced with driving lamps (artictsi idea)
battery mount removed and battery lowered using custom mount (3/16" mild steel plates welded into semi box)
fusebox and wires were redone(made a new fusebox from painless wiring)
rear faxle removed and replaced with 1" dom tubing
removed powersteering pump/lines
resevoir tank for radiator replaced with aluminum one from summit
no windshield washer tank
motor for windshield wipers gonet
hood support beams cut out and replaced with aluminum rods
seatbelts and motors replaced with harness
passenger seat taken out on race day

this so far has gotten me down to 2550 with me in it i weight 225 also when i weighed in i was on my aluminum rims in front and skinnies in the rear also there was only 2 gallons of gas in the tank

and this is a daily driver yes i know its not safe if i get into a crash but i live on a island where there isnt much traffic and this car only goes about 2 miles to work and back

im waiting to remove my cc as soon as i can afford a cable and i am also trying to find a manual steering rack

but with my minor mods in my profile/tuning/traction and this wieght i have pulled off a 13.2

hahaha my kind of thread...

i have removed my seats front and rear...reinstalled a driver seat thats light weight...sound deadening removed...bumper supports removed...exhaust removed(i have a custom piece that is 10 inches long...) all carpet..panels....headliner...im currently cutting the door frame supports (that protect you from side impact)...i want to get this car down past 2500lbs...i have no clue where im at. i havent driven t he car in 6 mos...

exhaust from downpipe back is one straight piece that goes directly under the tank and out the center

What was this for? If the piping still goes all the way to the end of the car you're not really saving much by excluding a bend. Would think you'd make a short exhaust if anything like the 10" one pnklmnd made or something. Maybe an idea for the future maybe?

its just because i run in the street class and you need a exhaust that exits in back of the rear tire

also it saved me 25lbs from the stock downpipe back
and 5 lbs from using this and going over the axle like the stock does

A few more to add to the list:
-brake rotor dust shields
-transmission shift counterweight

I did not see this mentioned above but maybe I missed it and maybe some of you have already done this. :thumb:

ok so im waiting on the evo316g and other stuff ;)

but im thinkin i need to lose about 1000-1100lbs off of my car while retaining the a/c and pwr steering.

how can i do this? WTF

Do you realize how much weight that actually is? I took out 400lbs ALMOST, and my car was gutted, I cut metal and everything. No a/c, balance shafts, bumper supports, interior, carpet, no padding anywhere on the car, etc etc etc... And that was in a 1g.

Easy, just remove the entire drivetrain-motor, tranny, transfer case, driveshaft, rearend, axles and the suspension. Otherwise its just not going to happen-500 pounds is possible but your car will be completely gutted.

haha i am serious.. maybe i could do it after i hack my entire car apart and use all carbon fiber body parts and make everything feathery LOL

there is not some huge chunk of metal that isn't usful i could cut off? haha (besides the motor)

The only way would be to tube frame the car, and use a full fiberglass or carbonfiber shell for the body. Thats how drag racers do it, but your looking at spending big bucks for the custom fabrication work, plus its not even remotely close to being street legal. Why bother to go so low? I'm trying to get my car down to under 2700 pounds with a quarter tank with 475-500whp and its costing me big bucks. That will get me a better power to weight ratio then a enzo has. If you really want something that light then go with a lotus Elise and supercharge it. It would be cheaper to do then getting a dsm that light.

You can't. If you're lucky, you might be able to fined 800 pounds to get rid of. Please refer to the dozens of other lightening threads.

Here is my current DSM Weight-Loss project. '93, AWD. I'm cutting it out if it doesn't need to be there. Anyone have a suggestion on how to get the sound-deadening material off of everything? I was thinking of a heat gun, but I haven't tried that yet.

Paint scraper on a cold day worked for me. It took a while but the stuff pops off in chunks.

You could always buy some decent gloves and some dry ice. It should chip off nicely after being frozen.

i just used a chisel and rubber mallet to get the sound deadening off then mineral spirits to make all nice and clean

It seems like those carbon fiber hatches will only really benefit 2g cars. 95% of a 1g hatch is glass, while a 2g hatch has much more metal. I'll bet just putting a lexan window in a 1g metal hatch will do WAY more weight reduction than a 1g carbon fiber hatch.

Yeah I'll probably end up doing a lexan rear window just because of that reason...Not for a while though, I have more power adders to buy before I start dishing out for lexan. Probably a front window soon though since my glass one is all messed up my rear view mirror fell off and the glass behind the backing chipped off with it...anyone ever had that happen?
