I personally am looking to do some weight reduction while retaining the quiet/smooth ride, and still having a spare so I can go on the highway without getting flatbedded home.

heres some of my ideas, just normal of course.

CF hood
Ditch all of my stereo and just get upgraded 6x9, 5.25, and 3.5's hooked to the factory amp/deck.
CF Hatch<<<Anyone make one for us?
CF Spoiler<<Anyone make it?
Dimple Drilled/Slotted Rotors

What else is there? I dont wanna tear out all the sound deadening or the spare tire.

- Tar sound dampning material on floor
- Rear Seatbelt assemblies
- Speakers
Thats all I can think of right now, cuz my brain sucks :coy:

My car weighs 2810 with only a half a tank of gas.

My secret:

No spare tire, no jack, no lug wrench
No trunklid
Trunk floor cover replaced with lighter lexan
No back seat
No rear seat belts
No sound deadening material (inside the car)
No carpet padding
No Alarm
No factory stereo (JVC deck and door speakers)
No A/C (even the control box inside the car)
No cruise control

Thats about it.

When removing the AC Compressor, is it safe to remove the holding bracket as well? the one that's bolted to the block, or should i leave it in there?

[Ask ONCE.]

I'm gonna be shipping a hatch and I need to know the weight.. anybody have any guesses or exact numbers? I'm thinking 45-60 lbs somewhere around there. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

i sold mine, but i didnt have to ship it, but when i picked it up, it was heavy, I would say 60-75 lbs do u have a scale that you weigh yourself on?Thats what i use when I ship stuff out

I am looking to remove anything and everything I can from my wiring harnesses to free up weight. I plan to keep some luxuries such as power windows and door locks. I am wondering if anyone could help me find things to remove other than what is on my list below.

Here are the things I would like to keep:

Power windows
Power door locks
Sunroof controls
Factory gauges
Headlights, taillights etc. necessary for a "street legal" car
Front and Rear wipers with washer fluid controls

This is what I have come up with to get rid of and have already began removing:
Cruise control
ABS
Keyless entry receiver and associated wiring except for what is needed to keep the power locks
All speaker lines
SRS system
Emissions stuff

I am looking to get rid of anything that isn't necessary for the car to run sensors, wiring etc. I have a hard time reading wiring diagrams so I am sure I will be looking for some help with that at some point. Thanks for the help

Chris

You're certainly going about saving weight in a way that not many others have. Honestly, how much weight do you think you will save by pulling out wiring? I guess the sensors and control units may weight a bit. If you are pulling the srs wiring out, might as well remove the airbags for quite a bit of weight savings. I shaved my rear wiper arm/rear window squirter, and removed the wiper bottle to save a little weight. You could also pull out the rear seatbelts for some additional weight savings, that is only if you don't use your rear seats ever, i know i don't. With all the work necessary to pull the entire interior out, separate the unnecessary wires from the others, and then pull out the webbing of wires from the car, you may regret trying to save weight that way. Whatever you choose, goodluck. :thumb:

Granted yes this does seem a little extreme and wasteful just for a little weight but, from what I have taken out so far it seems to be shaving a couple pounds. Right now my interior is stripped as I am putting a cage in within the next couple weeks so doing this is not that big of a task just more tedious. I am looking at getting rid of any system that I won't be using or any unnecessary brackets, relays, buttons. In the end I think between the computers and wiring I should be able to shave off about 20-25 pounds. Thanks for the input though.

Oh, I agree 100% that every little bit matters. Like you said, all those sensors and computers should add up to a decent chunk of weight. If the car is already stripped for a cage, it should be no problem removing the things you talked about. I know for a fact that airbags are quite hefty, and should yield a good amount of weight savings if you choose to remove them. If you want some suggestions for areas to save weight, you could remove the: rear wiper arm/motor, rear washer bottle/squirter, spare tire, jack, sheet metal brackets in the spare tire area, rear seats, rear seatbelts, power antenna. You could also replace the following with carbon fiber/lexan replacements: hood, hatch, hatch glass. Also, look into lightweight wheels (rotating mass), brake calipers, rotors, etc. for even greater savings.

I've looked into most everything you mentioned already. Your right, I could lose a lot of weight with the wipers and such but I would like to keep those amenities. I am really looking for all of the measly shit that I would never use: keyless entry, ABS, SRS, emission wiring. Do you know of any other circuits on the car that are worthless? I think if I ever get the car running I may decide I don't need the wiper motors and such but I will cross that road when I come to it. As for rotating mass I have looked into wilwoods dynalights for brakes and the options for wheels are endless. I have also been trying to find info on a manual steering rack for the 2Gs but that is a whole nother thread. Thanks a lot for the help you have given so far though.

Not a problem at all, I love helping out a fellow DSMer. The manual steering rack is a great idea to shave off some weight. Being AWD, you need every pound of weight savings you can get. As far as unnecessary circuits, you could remove the power antenna and cables, and go for an under-dash setup to use less wiring. Factory amp and related wiring can be removed if you switch to an aftermarket head unit with a built in amp (also weight savings to be had there). As far as other unnecessary circuits, i'll have to think for a bit, consult my shop manual, and get back to you on that ASAP.

Yeah, I already got the amp and all of the speaker wiring out. I am looking at this diagram for the power door lock receiver for the keyless entry and I cannot figure out if everything will still work if I just pull the wiring from the unit until I can't go any further. The one thing I do see is that the #1 power relay has one wire (brown/Blue) coming from it to the receiver and I don't know the effects that will have on the rest of the system. Could you take a look at that for me and see if you can figure it out. I can't :notgood: . Thanks a lot.

I'll try to look that up in the morning for you. :thumb:

I am looking at pulling the wiring for the cruise control right now and I am curious as to whether or not yours had wiring for an automatic tranny. I am lost right now looking at the diagrams as it shows wiring for an auto no matter what. Also the wiring for those pins related to the automatic ECU are not the same colors as what is shown in the circuit diagram. Any thoughts? Thanks

Glass weights a lot look into FAL window replacement kit, and for a light weight batt. try holly dry cell just don't run a big w7's off it or anything

I bet he's pulled at least 200lbs out of that thing. I got 125lbs out of my 2G with just removing the passenger seat, backseat, and everything aft of that. Don't imagine the weights between generations for things like jack, spare and seats differ that drastically. I think the dash weighs at least 30lbs.

Looks like fun. I'll probably do something like that on my 2G later this winter, but I'll be cleaning it all and reinstalling it. :thumb:

Well guys tear apart your dash and see whats underneath and you'll figure out what I did. The plastic dash is going back up. But the whole heater/air conditioning stuff is gone. Counting the seats I got rid of about 206 lbs. give or take with my scale. There's alot more under your dashboard then you think. I'll post up pics once I'm done. And no this car will not be much of a daily driver. However, once I have all the dash back up and a little bit of cover up work, you won't even be able to tell anything is gone. Didn't take over a day either, I'll be done putting it together by tonight. Total weight savings so far total about 300 lbs. My goal is to get rid of about 400-500. I figure if Shep could get his car down to 2650 and still call it streetable (it was at the time, I don't know what it weighs now) then I should be able to do the same. Probably won't show a dramatic difference in ET but hey at least I can say I did it. Plus I'm just waiting on a tranny and manifold anyways.
