Dont know if when doing a compression test to i have to just crank the engine. or do i crank the engine and let the engine turn on.

No, you do not want the engine to turn on. Disconnect all of the spark plugs from the coil (not the valve cover) or disconnect the coil itself and take out the engine fuse just to be sure. Crank it for a few seconds until the little pointer on the compression reading stops moving.

the reson is because i did it with just the engine cranking and i got no compression at all. what could it be

when i bought the car it was running a bit rich. but when i did a belt job it didnt want to turn on. it cranks but it does not want to turn on. my buddy did the compression test on it and none of them have compression. could it be the rings or a leaky head gasket.

i find it hard to belive all read no compression at all you should at least have some.. i used to just pull a plug for the injectors when i did mine but any of those ways work. you sure you had it screwed down into the head correctly?

I agree that it's unlikely that you truly have zero compression in all cylinders. Try to borrow a different tester and do another test.

On a 2G look in the engine bay fuse box. There is a 20A fuse in the middle of the top row designated as "ENGINE". Just pull that fuse when you do the test and the car will crank but won't be injecting fuel.

Pull the MPI fuse labeled engine in the fuse box. Make sure the car is warmed up to operating temperatue. Remove 1 spark plug and thread the compression tester into the hole. Hold the throttle wide open and turn the car over until the needle on the compression tester doesnt go any higher and take the reading. Simple as that
