Well I haven't had A/C in about two years cause it broke, the only part left is the compressor, I just never took it out.

My question is,

Can I just cut the belt and unbolt the compressor? or does that belt run something else too?

OK I am trying to remove my ac system, I think I know which belt is the ac belt but it looks like it goes around the crank pulley to is that correct, also if that is the belt will there be any ill effects from me removing the ac belt since it is the only onethat pulls on the crank pulley back to the firewall, all the other pulleys pull to the front of the carwillthat pull the crank out of balance or anything. Thanks for any info

There should be bracket w/ a pulley between the crank pulley and the a/c pulley. This pulley on the bracket is the tensioner pulley and at the center of the pulley there should be a nut. Loosen this nut so that it can be adjusted. Now up top, there should be a long bolt. This is the adjusting tensioner bolt. I forgot which way does what, but you turn that to tighten or loosen the tensioner pulley which in turn decides how much tension is put on the a/c belt. Lessen the tension on the belt and then remove it.

BTW, are you trying to remove the entire a/c system or just the belt?

If you have 2g GS-T, it is the only belt that goes in the direction of the firewall. Make sure you have had your FREON emptied out of the A/C system before you go and remove the A/C system. (You don't have to remove the freon to have the belt taken off.) You are never going to use the belt again, just cut it off.

My A/C compressor froze. In the middle of the damn summer! GRR:mad:
I am just making sure i can cut that belt without an troubles.

After a BS day at work with running all over New Orleans "setting" up PC's, which turned out to be just wasting gas and making my car run like crap with the horrible roads in New Orleans and the fact that we just went around plugging power strips into walls, but thats another story, my A/C compressor took a crap on me. It still blows cold air but it makes this horrible grinding noise. Come to find out the compressor pulley is dangerously flopping all around in the engine bay as well as metal shavings and smoke everywhere, and I'm waiting for the belt to just fly off driving an hour and a half away back home. Luckily this didn't happen. I made sure to search before I asked, like I always do.

My question is this:

Yes, the hot days here in Louisiana suck big time but I would rather no A/C than an engine fire or a snapped belt that takes out my timing belt.

Is it ok to just cut the belt off and leave like that till I have the time/money to get it fixed? I looked it over really well, including the Hanes, and it looks like it just attaches to the crank pulley. I don't see any problem with this but would rather be safe than sorry.

Thank you for any and all help.

IMO, i think its okay just to cut it until you get the time/money to fix it or just do the JDM A/C delete

i did the JDM A/C delete(LOL) and i have no regrets and i am not too far so you cant say i dont know what hot is i just use the greatest invention the power window switch

Yea, I'm thinking that too but as far as the A/C delete, my friend with his Prelude hasn't had A/C for a while now and was fine with it at first but now that's all he wants. I HAVE to have my A/C! Thanks for the reply, :thumb:. I would like any more "ok's or don't do's" from anyone else. I lack knowledge in the A/C area.

Thank you again.

I think I might have a spare A/C compressor laying around of you need it. Let me know.

Hey man, cutting your belt off won't have any bearing on the drivability. Except for the heat and humidity. Just remember to turn off the switch on the dash to keep from energizing the a/c clutch. The climate control system will also try to engage the a/c when you switch it to defrost.

Just trying to help out.

Thank you. I actually didn't know that. I'll keep that in mind when I have to use defrost when it gets cold. I guess though I could just disconnect that plug on it and not worry about it trying to kick on right?

I have a compressor that was just pulled from my buddy's 2G TSi AWD. It worked fine when we removed it; he just never used a/c and would rather have the weight savings.

The car has 138k on it, but the belt's been cut since the 120k mark.

I was going to scrap it- if it'll work for you, just pay shipping and it's yours. I just want it out of my shop.

Wow. With the A/C belt off, the car has it a little easier now. There's not so much stress now thats being put on the engine. No A/C sucks but it feels like the car is lighter, even though I know it isn't. Usually when I'm cruising and stay at a steady speed vaccuum would be about 6-7, now it's around 12 and my idle used to be 13-14 and is now 16.

My question for you now. I was told by a few people that I would have to replace the dryer. Is this true and is it completely necessary? What exactly is the dryer's job?

:dsm:

The primary function of the receiver-drier is to separate gas and liquid. The secondary purpose is to remove moisture and filter out dirt. Yea, I would recommend replacing the receiver-drier whenever you open up the A/C system. I mean, it only cost like $15 at Napa. I know, I just bought one.

I just bought mine tonight. $27.27 :D. I'm gonna have the dealership do it as well as my timing belt. Finally! My timing belt kit from partsdinosaur.com has been sitting in my room for months.
