I dunno. I have a 3200 lb steel AWD Eclipse and Greg has a 2000 lb Laser.
Anybody else crack Stoptech rotors?

Yes, but for some reason he has stopped replying to my emails. Maybe it's my e-breath.

He's not the only vendor like that. Ground Control is unreachable. With some vendors, it's like, "Did you win anything? No? Then go away until you win something and then maybe I'll talk to you."

Well...it certainly seems that way, anyway.

Conversations that I've had with Matt Weiss at Stop Tech have centered around the necessity of rebuilding the calipers throughout the race season (I've been lucky... knock on wood). I'm sure there have been warped and cracked rotor issues with the type of abuse hard racing can do. You've had problems with your hubs if I recall, that may have had an effect on the rotor to caliper patch, creating a spherical inconsistency in the heat cycles (I'm shooting in the dark). I've had plenty of issues with parts and their manufacturers over the years and the scenario has always lead to a mis-match in components until the learning curve was complete. It's been an expensive and upsetting process, but it's been the price I've had to pay to be somewhat successful in my endeavors...

Gosh, I was gonna get stoptech's this winter, but now I'm thinking otherwise! Do TCE's require a master cyl. swap? I couldn't find any mention of it on their website. (Maybe we are getting off subject a bit, new thread?)

I needed a new M/C anyways and wanted something different. There is NO requirement to change M/C's with the Wilwoods.

Crikies, this thread is up to 5 pages, and has branched out into spec engines, brakes, getting started in racing, and similar topics that deserve their own threads. Any progess in getting our own road racing forum here within TrackTalk? We could poppulate the forum with a half-dozen threads already.

Hah, I was just noticing that the Track Talk forums top 20 topics, at least 12 of them I think were road racing topics. (read my addition to the fuel tank thing/what was your solution/any good ideas about that)

I think we have "spec" DSM class worked out. "unlimited" is easy. Soooo now all we need to do is to get the wheels working as far as actually getting people that would be comitted to racing in the series, and getting NASA to open a new "class"... I think summer 07 we should have this up and running for sure!

I'm in for this. Any event within a reasonable range I'll go to, or as far as the budget allows. I'm tired of people saying our cars can't handle and can only go in a straight line, I want to prove them wrong. Most importantly, this this is going to be so much fun getting to drive the car I love on a road course and head-to-head with others just like it.
Keep us updated and I'll be honing my skills and getting my car ready in the meantime.

I imagine my best outlook would be to run some Time Trials in 2007, competition maybe by 2008 summer for me. That's a best case scenario really.

Interest has arisen in the 3000GT/Stealth (3S) community toward NASA. The marketing director of the NASA Midwest region contacted one of the active 3000GT drivers, asking what it would take to get 3Sers into NASA.

I think we could accommodate 3S cars in the DSM group, just by loosely following the current NASA TT groupings. Essentially, they are rated a class or two ahead of DSMs. So, we could have similar rankings in our spec classing system.

Seems to me that, by combining forces, the Mitsu marque could put forth a powerful argument, backed by a considerable number of cars. Might be enough to get whatever we want from NASA and/or SCCA. Note that there are more 3S cars running HPDEs today than there are DSMs. Together, we might outnumber M3s, 911s and Z06es.

Where should we go from here?

I'm about that far away too... Really all depends on whether I can build an uber cheap motor to beat on before I drop an extensive amount for Mitch to build my "race" engine.

Theoretically I could be ready for wheel-to-wheel by 2006. Contingent on NASA expanding into the NW. Anyone in the NW following this thread?

The biggest block for me is travel time/travel money. I can't promise anything, that's why I haven't participated in this thread.

It ain't gonna happen in 2006..... way too many details to attend to. Plus, everyone needs to get their HPDE time complete to qualify for their race license. I realize there are already people out there ready to compete, but they're gonna have to be patient. The fact that there is so much quantitative interest to date, is going to make this a reality...

What's the site that I can go to find out about the where and when the HPDE's will take place? I want to get the ball rolling for me so when this dsm class starts I can be ready to compete!

The NASA guy is Eric Meyer at [email protected]. He seems very interested in helping us out. I directed him to this thread so, even as we speak, he might be reading our comments. I gave him the DSM point of view and restated my goal of establishing a sane, logical and economical upgrade path for DSMs from bone-stockers running HPDEs to modded cars running in a spec race class.

I urge any Midwest DSMers to contact Eric at the email address and tell him of your interest in road racing, whether you are a rookie just getting started or a grizzled veteran. Remember, NASA starts you out in beginner HPDEs in your stock car, graduates you to TT classes as you add mods, and then -- if the good lord is willing and the creeks don't rise -- gives you a competition license and puts you into a spec DSM class or some other race class under SU. We have a chance to influence what NASA does by (a) telling Eric what we think and (b) assuring him that there are DSMers out there in the Midwest who will run NASA events.

So, please send him your opinions, inputs, concerns and assurance that if he builds it, we will come.

You can copy us here, too, but please send your email to Eric directly. There's no guarantee that he'll subscribe to this thread, so he may never see anything that just comes here.

Good job Rich :thumb:

Ok guys in the Mid West... Your gonna get what you wanted!!!

I had a lengthly talk on the telephone with Dave Royce (NASA Regional Director) this morning, discussing a DSM series in your region and Dave wants to do what ever he can to accommodate you for 2006!

How frigging cool is this!!! :D

So RICH, you need to get your 3000GT/Stealth group and others ready for a season of HPDE, Time Trials, and those who want to get their race license and participate in some real wheel to wheel action in the first event in April of 2006. That gives you guys three whole months to prepare for the most exciting time of your life :rocks:

Dave has even gone as far as signing up on our site as "NASA MIDWEST" to soon field questions from you guys on what you want :thumb:

Greg :)

I'll be running it as soon as I get my NASA race license. I guess that means a few TTs first under the beady eyes of a NASA instructor. I dunno how many of us will actually be ready to go beyond TTs in 2006. With luck, we could have a half-dozen cars by midseason. The most important thing, though, is that this will encourage Midwest DSMs to move up from HPDEs to TTs to races.

Will 3000GTs and Stealths be in this group?
Dave, if you're listening, what do you want me to tell them?

Damn...looks like I created a monster.

Yes... yes... and yes.... We talked about the Stealths and 3000Gts definitely being part of the group. He's looking to me-(us) for guidance, and not getting too complicated. If you've participated in HPDE 4 for a while, you'll be eligible for your license. TT is not a requirement, your ability is! He's trying to set up the licensing school to accommodate those who may be ready. He'll be doing some polls on the DSM site to establish what he needs to do to accommodate you. He said he could possibly have a school going at the first event to get the racers on board ASAP!!

The word needs to go out to get people on board to make this a successful endeavor :thumb:

That sounds friggin awesome. I'm really going to have to get something figured out for this year.

I just did a quick skim through this thread, and counted enough people who posted here from the Mid West, in order to get the series started. Now it's just a matter of NIKE or more commonly refereed to as, JUST DO IT :D

I think it's safe to say that this thread was a success.
Now it's time to start another one: GETTING A DSM LEGAL FOR NASA RACING.

I don't even know what to ask. Can somebody step in and lead us through the regs, specs, rules and whatnot.? Maybe in an entirely new thread?

Here's a good first question for the new thread: HELP!!!!!!! What do I gotta do to make my DSM legal?
