Now it's time to start another one: GETTING A DSM LEGAL FOR NASA RACING.

I don't even know what to ask. Can somebody step in and lead us through the regs, specs, rules and whatnot.? Maybe in an entirely new thread?

Here's a good first question for the new thread: HELP!!!!!!! What do I gotta do to make my DSM legal?

Rich

Start out by reading the first couple of chapters of the CCR:

http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/ccr.pdf Car stuff starts at page 54.

It's pretty self explanatory... What you have questions about start a new thread and we'll be happy to guide you through.
But first have a beer and pat yourself on the back :thumb:

I've been racing with nasa for bout 3 years now in the northern cali region. I still run in group 4 w/ option of only running in SU due to my mods. I've raced in pro-7 before and I fell that a dsm class will have same problems that pro-7 has, which is low enrollment. each event there are maybe 2 or 3 other drivers in pro-7. for all the years i've been at the tracks, I rarely see other DSMers out there. In order to get a class started you need people that will join that class, make some competition, such as spec-miata, which has ###### 10-15 cars each event minimum. I might start attending some southern cali events to see if any dsm's attentance out there besides greg.

I could have my car legal to race by sometime this year. I def want to start the process on getting my competition license. It sounds to me like I need to go through the HPDE's and maybe some time trials to be eligible for my license? Then the next obvious question is what exactly is the process to get my license and what will these things cost me?

hpde events are divided into 4 groups. group 1 and 2 run together, 1 being first timers needing instructors to be with them as a passenger. group 2 runs at same time as 1 but no instructor needed, also for newbies. group 3 is for when you get more experience. Passing is allowed in more area's and passing limitations are decreased as the day progresses. you should stay in Group 3 for a while unitl you feel totally confortable with your car and get consistent times. group 4 is open passing everywhere, and other people on the track drive fast and have much experience. this is where you hone in passing while going into turns, and coming out of them, as well as developing line style for specific situations. An instructor will then ride with you a few sessions determining if you are ready for race license.

This is good stuff! It's great to see another NASA racer on board... I'd love to be running your NorCal tracks :thumb:

Thanx! I have a couple years of autox under my belt and am familiar with Scca rules and classing, but NASA is all new to me. I've wanted to get into road racing and now have a good avenue to do so. From my understanding the HPDE's only require about the same as Solo 2 for the cars? I won't need the cage or anything just yet?

That's right! Just good OEM seatbelts and a current helmet and your good to go. Once you start driving on a track you'll be hooked OMG

Think of an HPDE as a 20 min autocross, five times a day, two days a weekend. That's...um, er...let's see, 20 x 5 x 2, is about 200 minutes of WOT, or more than three hours of balls-to-the-wall driving around Mid Ohio, Nelson's Ledges, Indianapolis Raceway Park, and probably a half dozen other tracks within a few hours of Columbus. Looks like our first Mdwest NASA event might be Road America. Once you run that track, you'll never run a postage-stamp parking lot autocross again. I never have.

You will need a helmet and some new brake pads -- preferably race pads -- but that's about it. Race tires are nice, because street tires can get hot and slippery, but you don't NEED them.

Rich... I'm I noticing a spring in your step? :D ROFL LOL :) ROFL :rocks: :sneaky:

Well, look at it this way: I bought the Eclipse because it was a prepped race race and I wanted to go fender-to-fender and I *ASSUMED* NASA had a race class for it. It wasn't until later that I found out the TT classes are not race classes, and the only race class for me was super unlimited. So, I started aggravating everbody at NASA while at the track, then worked through DSM Tuners, and now I got my race class! Whew!

Yeah, yer dang right I got a spring in my step. Them young punk kids in my class better walk softly stranger, as Tommy Smothers used to say. The old poop has a little life in him yet.

"Age should fear the strength of youth"...unknown. OMG Just playing though, I don't know if Road America is possible this year, it's around Chicago isn't it? Mid-Ohio is only an hour away, Indy is 3 hours and both I could do easily. I believe some events are held at Putnam park? Though I don't know where that's located. If the budget allows I'm all for Road America, the closest I've come to it is in video games. Laguna Seca, Watkins Glen, are some of the other courses I'd love to drive on as well.

Road America is a little north of Milwaukee, a long hike for you but well worth the trip. It is the finest road course in the world, with the possible exception of Spa in Belgium.

Laguna Seca is one of the best tracks around.

Even some skimming would reveal a lot. Basically it's most likely going to happen, I'm all for it and will get everyone I know to get into it.

Honestly, I'm not sure what will happen with it in the Mid-Atlantic area.. I think for 1g, 2g, and GVR4's, there are a handful of us. I actually haven't done a NASA event yet, as I have been trying to get points in SCCA where I have been doing decently well in ITE.

Came in 3rd in class last race. Heck, qualified 2nd in class (man AWD rocks in the rain, I wasn't pushing, was on INTERMEDIATES, and everyone else was on FULL RAIN tires (hoosiers) and still was 2nd in class, 7th overall in quals... and this was in HEAVY standing water)

At some point, I wouldn't mind doing some NASA events, but unfortunately, I haven't been able to campaign two "series" at the same time so far, as we've had some reliability issues in Neal Racing's first race season.

BTW, for those who didn't catch it earlier, have video's up at http://www.nealracing.com in the Events section, including video's from MARRS X as of eariler in the week.

Well got myself some new parts for the car. New helmet, Nomex driving suit, and a new corbeau seat. Now I just need to get the cage bought and installed.

I am gonna put my 2cents in here, when you say "stock" that is a Grey area and needs to be worded different. I have a stock 2.0dohc in my 92 mits mirage, but it is not for that car, so at my track i can say it doesn't say "stock for that make model and year of car". Writing rules for a race class is worse then writing instructions for a stereo system :p also, the fwd and awd should be allowed to race together, but the awd should get a 300lbs or so weight penalty. anywho, just thought i would add some mumbo jumbo at 1:45 am :p

NASA asked me to pass this along

Well, I've been given the go ahead to "leak" the following information. NASA will shortly be announcing their new race series called; PRO-TOURING, at least that's the name of it at the moment. It will encompass a great deal of cars including turbos and superchargers. The class will be governed by the new "Time Trial" classifications for cars. If you're unfamiliar with time trails regs., it's done on a modifications points system. The more your car is modded from stock, the more points you will accrue towards what racing group you'll be in. This way you won't just be running against other DSM's, you'll be racing against a field of cars with [#]like [/#]HP, suspension, tires, weight, and so-on. It should be quite competitive and a real blast.:rocks: :rocks: :rocks:

Gee, this sure sounds familiar. Didn't somebody (ahem) suggest this very same thing a billion posts ago? I'm glad somebody was listening. This new class ROCKS!

Hmmm....how many points for taking out the windows?
