My 93 tsi currently is only fwd, the transfer case is good so im just trying to figure out why the rear wheels arent spinning. Just trying to see if anyone has experienced this before and what the causes are.

LOL

I'm sorry but your post is very misleading. You have an AWD but are currently FWD and are wondering why your rear wheels are not spinning? What did you do to convert to FWD?

My car is awd but only the front wheels are spinning and i was just curious why. The transfer case, driveshaft and rearend are all in good working order so im not sure what must have broken in the tranny to cause this

Did you lift both the front and rear off at the same time and then put it in gear to see what is and isn't moving under the vehicle?

How are you so sure that everything is working properly?

I would get the thing put up in there air, and get a visual confirmation on what you are saying. Everything will be easily viewable from underneath the car. I am not saying that I don't believe you. But just be sure to check. And if something is not spinning under the car, chances are that you will be able to see what is and is not spinning.

Put it on jacks and start it up. Slowly release clutch and see if all 4 wheels are spinning. I personally don't think you have a problem.

I just do not see how you could have a problem like that and not hear some kind of ungodly noise when it may have occurred, or not hear anything while driving it. Get it in the air and check.

I dont think we ever got a confirmation that the back wheels are actually not spinning. Please first lift the car and verify that only your fronts are turning. After that report back with your results. First step of a repair is confirming the problem. We are counting on the information you provide to assist you in getting this thing fixed. I agree with razrman8: get underneath and figure out where the drivetrain isnt spinning. if your driveshaft isnt spinning its likely in the transmission (assuming you are correct about the transfer case). If your driveshaft is turning but your rear wheels arent then you are lookin at a rear end problem. Either way I think you would have some serious noise from the broken pieces that are still inside the case (trans or rear diff). Sounds to me like your guessin that your rear wheels arent spinning

I am positive that the rear wheels arent spinning and i put it up on jack stands in the garage and let out the clutch and just the front wheels spin. It makes a serious clunking/knocking noise inside the trans when i first start it.

And even tho im a new member on here im not a newbie/idiot when it comes to working on cars.

If i spin the driveshaft by hand then the rear wheels spin so im assuming it must be the tranny

Sounds like you have ruled out everything from the transfer case back so is there anything left other than the transmission?? Haha

Well if it is from a launch or whatever its not from me. I havent even had the car on the road yet. I think the previous owner said he towed it with a car dolly but he took the driveshaft out. Would that screw up the center diff?

If wheelsare spinning when you turn the drive shaft by hand I would take the transfercase off and check the splines, possible broken spline maybe?

If he really took the driveshaft out when he had it on a dolley then that is fine. But, did he really? Just cause he said that doesn't mean he really did.

x2
im thinking he may have forgotten to do this when he towed it and broke the tranny. Then told you he did so you would buy it and think not think otherwise. Im willing to bet your center diff spider gears are in many pieces inside and have probably trashed the transmission. If your not going to take him to small claims and get your money back, i would start looking for a transmission asap.
