Hello everyone! I just purchased my 1996 Eclipse GST a few months ago, had some issues with a few different things. Most recent was car was smoking and running very uneasy, so I decided to pull the engine. I am going to do a full engine rebuild-ish, I bought new wisco heads, still looking at the rods I want, if there’s anything anyone thinks I should buy and upgrade I would love help! Trying to push more power but not an insane amount seeing how I want this to be more of a daily but not quite. Thank you guys!

yes. Those are known failure points. They are two pieces and sometime they separate. It's 4 bolts. Easy to remove.

Alright, another new thing. Fun fun, there’s always an issue because why not. Today on the high way, alternator lights started to come on, just as I was about to pull over they stopped. My belts started squealing out of no where, lights came on, lost power steering. The belt is now on the freeway somewhere. I cannot figure out for the life of me why this happened. Anyways, car is now over heating because it had no water pump spinning. I bought all new belts, installed them, car is now squealing louder and worse than before, and overheating really badly, my guess is from that water pump. I got prom in 2 days and am going to be so very angry if this car is on jack stands because of something stupid like this. Thank you all again, appreciate everything.

If I'm right you can physically see the belt riding towards the motor. Most common cause I see is harmonic balancer followed by improperly installed water pump pulley but that is typically plainly obvious. Actually didn't we discuss that like a month ago?

Yes we did. I think I did the water pump one right, I don’t know how I could mess it up. How can I tell if the harmonic balancer is messed up? I know the alternator was replaced by me, and it was squeaking pretty bad since I replaced it. I must not have done it right is my guess.

I can see the belt shaking from side to side from the top, I haven’t checked underneath, that I will do. But why would my car be over heating after this snap? It must’ve been a really bad one. It flipped my ac belt upside down completely!!

If the balancer is separated the inner piece turns but the outer one may not. If that happens all accessories are underperforming or not at all. If you think this is it don't drive it. The outer piece can go towards the timing belt and has been known to take the belt out.

Ok, got it. That makes a ton of sense. How can I check this to make sure it isn’t broken or messed up? You said something about rubber I think. I will not drive it, and will be very careful.

From the video i can't think of too much it could be besides this. Damage will likely be obvious. Last one the failed on me came apart in my hands.

I pulled off the 4 bolts today and it’s loose, just have to jack up the engine a bit to get it off, it honestly seems fine…. I don’t know if that’s good or bad, but I guess I’ll know for sure once I rip it off.

What are your overall goals for the car? Are you trying to stay close to stock or are you going to build it up with an FMIC?

Reason I ask, is because I have this piece of DSM history here. It is a Joe P upper intercooler pipe, made by one of them members here that i bought back in like 2003 or so.

It was my very first mod and first purchase from the forum. It is already flanged for a 1g bov and replaces the section from side mount intecooler to the upper intercooler sleeve that goes to the throttle body. I also used it with my Greddy style front mount that took the long route, but isnt needed with an FMIC that takes the short route.

. It is yours, for free if you want it. Just needs a coat of paint and ill clean that leftover RTV off before sending. Just DM me your address. Its been in my garage for years and Id really like to give it to someone who can use it.
I would absolutely love it! Thank you so so very much, how would I install this piping exactly? I am currently cutting and welding a straight fitting for the Bov, how would I do a long pipe? Again though, thank you so very much. I know this car has given me nothing but issues but im not even close to being over it!!!

That much smoke etc whatever is happening the cause should reveal itself easily. Once that thing is in your hands see if it move. It may just fall apart in your hands. While you're down there check your other pulleys for damage. Bearings fail, bolts accidently left loose etc.

Shouldnt need to cut or weld anything, its a direct replacement. You install the BoV directly to the flange. You can use rtv or a handcut a gasket to seal. The long side of the pipe goes through the hole underneath your air intake and connects to the coupler connecting to your sidemount intercooler, the other end connects to the black sleeve that goes up to the throttle body.

Awesome!! I would absolutely love it, but i cannot take it for free. I have to give you something, it’s too much.

I didn’t see anything, i did however replace my harmonic balancer, it was cracked and chipped, the new one made for my car it says however does NOT fit my AC unit. I put on the balancer and my AC belt is about 4-5 inches too loose. So I’ll have to go pick io another one made for my car actually 😂 as a matter of the water pump, im betting like 50 bucks that’s the issue. It’s just so so coincidental. Any other tests or ideas i can do let me know please. Thank you all!!

If this was running correctly I just can't see it being water pump unless bolts came loose on the pulley. Ac also did you check the pulley?
How did you get the wrong balancer?

Yeah, it was running super great, then when the belt snapped, of course i lost power steering but but then my car just got so so so very hot. It’s still overheating, bolts and ac pulleys are goods. I was given the wrong balancer from Oreilys.

I got no idea if this is from the water pump or what, but this whole pulley is coveredddd in metal shavings. Should I replace the water pump or no guys? I think I might buy a new one and put it on.

Does the snout of the water pump have play?
There should be 2 water pump pulleys. Looks like you found your problem.

No it doesn’t seem to have play, yes i have both of the pulleys, this was just the one with lots of shavings. The other one doesn’t. How could this be the problem thought if it’s all spinning and working?

So, I just took off the water pump and tensioner because I can’t get it off with the tensioner on. I had to repurchase the cam lock gears and tensioner tool thing. I will send you pictures and make sure I got it, just to be sure. For the oil balancer, do I need to drain the oil to undo that bolt? Kinda sucks, is what it is, and the worst part is the water pump doesn’t even look bad, but I don’t know anything.

I don't think water pump is bad if it didn't have play. What i was trying to get you to do is look at alternator tensioner arm and bolt l. There is a specific orientation it needs to go.
At least look around and find out what was rubbing on that water pump pulley.

I got it all back together, timing I did right. Car runs great now, no heating. Still I know that belt is rubbing. I think it’s rubbing from the alternator to the harmonic balancer. I see the belt shaking quite a bit, I don’t know why it’s not balanced right nor why it is rubbing. What should I do? Thank you guys.
