A chip? No. You don't need any valve/head work with 272's, but 272's are pushing it.
And chip? Our cars don't really have chips, asides from DSM link.
272's are a "bolt on" mod.

I put hks 272s in my 90 talon tsi. I did ferra springs and retainers and 1mm over sized ferra valves and a 16g and a walbro fuel pump at 14psi. Other wise its all stock. I think if you run 272s or bigger you should have aftermarket springs. I dont think its necessary but a good idea because a oem used spring will wear out over time with that big of a cam. I have had them in there for 6 months and she runs great and idles really well. Sure i added a little hp and i am not getting the full potential but i had them laying around and when i get more mods a way to tune the car i will really benefit from them. My gas mileage is still good if I'm not always in the gas and top end is better. I say go for it but you wont notice a huge gain till you can tune it.
I would never run BC cams FYI, they suck...a lot. Lol
I have HKS 272's, but if I could do it again I'd go with FP2's or Kelfords.
I can see where you are coming from but many people run 272s with stock springs and zero issues.
Now if you are running anything bigger then a 272, yes you need springs and retainers.
Agreed.
I love my HKS. Funny story, a buddy of mine has BC 272s in his car and I've got the HKS. When both cars are idling side by side mine actually sounds quite a bit more aggressive.
