I have fished my bottom end of my build. I am going to start on my head soon. I know what cams, and springs im getting bet don't know what head gasket to use? Also i don't know what ARP's to get? :thumb:. I have a goal of 500hp.

Part:

GSC S2 cams
GSC Spring kit
ARP's ?
Head Gasket?

Any help is great i have been searching around for along time and dont know what to go with. Thanks :hellyeah:
 
With a proper tune you can easily get away making 500hp with a stock composite gasket and ARP standards. You could go with an MLS if you want, but the head and deck should be resurfaced specifically for it. The surfaces need to be near mirror finish in order to ensure that the MLS gasket will seal.

But again, 500hp with a composite/standard ARP combo is totally possible.

Thanks for the info. I got a mirror finish on both the block and the head. Now I dont know how many thousands they took off at the machine shop on both. That will make my area of valve to piston clearance. How can i check this?
 
Good Idea to check.

Doubt you will be close tho, even with the GS2 cams.

If you want to know how much was cut from the head and block, measure head thickness and then the piston to deck clearance.
 
Like Bogus said, you also want to check piston to head clearance. You don't want less than .035"! More than .050" starts getting to be too much for proper quench (even though our dished pistons have little to begin with) That will also help determine the thickness HG that you want to go with!

Goals change over time, so it might not be a bad idea to put L19s in there. I'm sure it's overkill, but you shouldn't have to buy studs again or worry about the head lifting if you shoot for 600+whp one day...
 
If the pistons stick above the block, you can measure with a machinist straight edge and feeler gauges. It takes a little bit to get an accurate measurement since they rock at the top of the bore and the straightedge can be a little hard to balance depending on the piston design. I would say you can get it as close as plastigauging a motor is compared to mic'ing one, if you take your time...

Those are the "Big Boy" head studs, used for big boost 35psi+ out of a big flow turbo

STM has a good rep here, from what all I have seen and read about them.
I personally have not delt with them.

So I will still suggest that you read there vendor reviews and make your own judgement.
 
Like they have said, ARPs will be fine for your current goal. I was just saying that I know how goals change over time. You get used to 300, 400, 500 whp and it just starts to seem normal. Next thing you know your needing 600 for it to feel fast to you again. Everyone else with "normal" cars thinks you're nuts, but 500 just doesn't feel as fast anymore :D At least that's how it was for me. I should have gotten L19s from the start...

Ask the shop that did the work, that is not a factory marking.

Could be how much was milled, or the employee that did the work.

Could have been the last 3 digits of your work order.

It is not in a gasket sealing area, so it really matters not.
 
That's a spec head.

Even by the FSM, that would meet spec.

First cut, and in good shape its whole life.

That now fits with the stamp in the pic.

They milled .002
 
I would like to know two things here and you can pm me the info if you would like. (slightly off topic)

First is what shops on here offer all these detailed measurements and planning a long block as in quench area and clearances?

Also if you do possess these skills, where did you learn or go to school for them?
