Liberty has proven to be a terrible vendor. And the few dsm guys that have used them either had to wait over 6 months or never received their stuff. There are billet gears available for 5th. PPG, Magnus, Shepherd all come to mind. The tall TRE gears were still helical. We installed one in 2007 in a car.

Where are they getting the straight cut 5th, TRE?

Mostly the gears a fabricated localy after a few people did blew shepherds 5th gear.
I'm not sure if there is a good 5th gear on the market.
Most shops don't really care because of very few customers who actually need it.
A german shop is in the progress to build a custom 5th gear cover that includes a bearing to get rid of the flexing shaft.

Is it heat that's destroying the fifth gear and if so maybe a tranny cooler would help?

I don't think it heat. The slider teeth got chewed up pretty bad and that's what caused it to not shift into 5th or reverse. I'm going to order a new taller 5th with the double synchro option from jacks as soon as I get paid. I figured the double synchro will help keep this from happening again.

My tranny is getting rebuilt by Raif. I'm going to ask him about the same fifth gear setup you mention. They say in the auto cross/road racing section that the tranny cooler does wonders for keeping the tranny cool hence saving the gears and parts from the excessive heat which can cause the gears to weaken. Jack has also offered it as an option for those that wanted to add a cooler and even offers to add AN fittings to the tranny if anyone is interested.

I don't think that heat is a problem. 5th gear isn't a part of the transmission, it is a 4 Speed tranny with an 5th gear addon.
Its just a weak gear, according to a local shop it is handling to much torque while driving hard and than it suddenly will lose all teeth. Thats exactly what happend to me, I was just going 60mph with no load when i loosed 5th gear. A day before that happend I did run the car hard/fast (150+mph).

AMG it's project snow white!!! The real guy! ;o

I liked your page! ;o amgggggg

hai!!

kidding....

What's up man, I've been following your page on FB.

Now that you say that, Steve, you are correct, I remember him saying he has a taller 5th now. But, didn't like it because he would fall outta boost. I guess that it has to be that way to go that fast. ;)

As for boost, it was right around 40lbs. Enough to max out 2150's on e85. Were guessing somewhere around 750.

It's crazy how hard it is to overcome wind drag, take my pass, near 200MPH and took around 700HP, to pick up about 40MPH more it took Mike around 1100-1200 ish, to pick up 30mph more it took LMR and the Hennessey Ford GT over 2000WHP. Wind SUCKS. LOL

It actually blows. :)

You going here at the end of the month? I might head out there.

LOL Glad you are enjoying my page. :)
Texas Turbo, we won't be there later this month. Still have some things we need to iron out before heading back out. I would love to see some pictures though. :)
