1991 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX

I just bought this one with 74000 original miles. All stock, for now.

Welcome back to dsm. Nice score. How many miles? What’s the backstory on this find?
Never seen a 1ga in candy apple. Gives it a more classic look. Leather seats? Those cheese slicer wheels have become so rare now, they’re back in style. Let’s get some more pics of this “before” state, so we can compare when you’re done.

I saw your post of the exhaust on the “what did you do today” thread so figured I would come follow the build. Looking good so far.

74,500 original miles. It was a 2 owner car that a car dealer bought from the 2nd owners estate. I saw the car listed for sale that was shared onto numerous DSM sites. The car was originally blue and the 2nd owner bought it in I believe 1993 with 18,000 miles on it and had the local Mitsubishi dealer paint it this color. I believe it is the 93 Eagle Talon red. It does not have leather seats. It has a few issues that can be expected with a 32 year old car. Sunroof has a leak I need to figure out, Factory stereo and speakers are shot, sun visors were taken off and were beyond cleaning so were thrown away. Driver door rubber is missing all the way around and the speedometer cable is squeaking. Besides that it looks as good in person as in the pics. Oh and the valve cover gasket was leaking. I fixed that this past weekend.

Will post a picture tomorrow. Installed a BT double din head unit this evening. Used a wiring harness but had to install a ground wire to make it work for some reason. I could not figure out how the factory unit was working unless the ground was included in the wiring harness coming from the amp which I did not use any of those wires.

I believe the turbo is blowing smoke. I will have to check it out when I have time. If so I will replace it with a Big 16g. I have already bought a walbro 255, rewire kit, FPR, and a 2g exhaust manifold. I will install the fuel pump and FPR before I mess with the turbo. And I will port and polish the manifold so it will be ready to install when I change the turbo out.

So as I have posted in other threads, I decided to rebuild the engine before adding go fast parts. Engine is stripped down, I put the main bearings in yesterday, waiting on a few odds and ends that I did not have before checking bearing clearances. I have removed all ABS stuff and have a non abs proportioning valve and stainless lines to replace it with. I removed the EGR stuff and got a EGR blockoff plate from JD Customs. I got a balance shaft delete kit from JNZ to install. I bought a MHI 20g turbo to go back in it, 1200cc injectors, fmic, Forge bov, Aeromotive FPR, 264/272 cams, adjustable cam gears, DSM Link V3, 2g MAF, 2g ex manifold that has been ported/polished. I am ready to get it back on the road. I only have a little time here and there to work on it and then a bit more on the weekends.

I have been buying parts for over a year. I had bought a XTD stage 4 with with 2300lb pressure plate and a OEM throw out bearing. I want a ACT 2600. Not sure if I am buying the ACT at this time or not. This entire endeavor has costs 3x what I originally anticipated. That may be another project after it is back up and running. I still want to put on 2g front calipers and all new rotors and pad upgrades, some sort of suspension upgrades, maybe KYB AGX struts and Tein springs? Also, wanting to replace factory rims with bronze Enkei TS-5 or something similar and "grippier?" tires. I like the look of the Firestone Firehawk Indy 500 but have not looked closely at reviews and whatnot. I have bought some stuff and then changed my mind on and went a different direction. I will probably have numerous parts for sale afterwards. Or save them for another engine build.

Completely understand how that goes. Ive been though my own bankroll with this car recently. Sent car to shop because the axles were seized up tight and out of my league, (even they had problems with it) which turned into clutch and fuel pump going on in the middle of two separate dyno tunes, etc, etc, etc and am still doing work myself now that i have the car back with putting in a FPR... and still need tires... old cars man...smh :D

Over the weekend, after getting the correct piston rings finally, after gapping them and checking rod bearing clearances i proceeded to torque everything down. I also stripped a rod bolt nut. So I ordered ARP rod bolts. Will have to take it to a machine shop I guess to have them pressed in.

Replaced the rod bolts with ARP hardware. Everything torqued down. Took the new oil pump apart to install the stub shaft on the small gear for the balance shaft removal. The balance shaft bearings were a pita to get out. Mainly the front one. Installed the back one and then realized JNZ sent me 2 back bearings which apparently are slightly smaller than the front. So I'm at a stand still again until I get the right size bearing for the front.
