I'm looking to upgrade from my stock T25, (95 talon awd). Its mainly a daily driver so acceleration and spool up is has priority over top end. After doing alot of reading (please correct me if I have my wires crossed), I've narrowed it down to a 1g 14b or an (evo3?) twin scroll 16g. The 14b is smaller and should therefore spool faster vs the 16g. However, the twin scroll design of the 16g allows for faster spool plus a 16g has the added benifit of a higher flow rate. So what I'm asking is is will a 16g twin scroll spool up as fast, or similarly, as a 14b? For those with experience which is nicer on road and traffic conditions?

There is no such thing as a twin scroll 16g. But i have the evo3 16g and is a great street turbo, spools just as fast as a 14b, maybe slightly slower by couple hundred erpms

There is no twin scroll Evo3 16G. They both spool fast, so in a dd either one is fine. Personally I would get the evo3 cause it has more potential. Just remember you aren't going to be able run more than stock boost safely on the 16G without any fuel mods, e.c.t so keep that in mind. If you put the 16G on and run it at stock boost it will probably suck cause it will be more laggy, and you wont be running much boost through it to make it worthwhile. If you run the 14b you could run a little more boost with a fuel pump rewire or just an upgraded pump. If you just want to run a little more boost and do it cheaper get the 14b rewire your stock pump or get a upgraded walbro and you could turn it up a bit a few psi (some sort of logger would be better to monitor things). If you are willing to do more supporting mods, the get the evo3

Thanks, yea thats why I put (evo 3?), I was getting confused with the information. Soon, (like next week) I plan on getting a link and fuel mods and eventually would like to run something around 20psi. So a 14b should do nicely for a DD? What is the smallest twin scroll that will work with a dsm? custom manifold obviously. I was reading an article about twin vs single by mazda I belive.. anyway according to the data a twin spools like 1500-2000rpms sooner than a single of the same size. A14b is in my price range for now but later on if I can flow more air with the same spool thats a win win I think.

Also a thought has anyone run a T25 with a tubular manifold and turbo back? any big diffrence?

! 14b is a good turbo, spools quick, just like the 16g. The 16g might spool slightly slower, maybe not even enough to notice. I would go with a 16g. It will have more top end, and you will make more power. I think if you get a 14b now, you will want a 16g eventually. Great turbo.

Had a t25 with a turbo-back and it helped quite a bit. They make twin scroll manifolds, but they are for T3/T4 set ups. I've never seen a twin scroll mitsu manifold cause most people running a twin scroll probably wouldnt run a mitsu style housing turbo. You shouldn't need a twin scroll set up with a 16G they seriously spool fast as hell. You could run a 14b now, (its a good dd turbo, it did come on a 1g after all LOL) and since you need the 2g install kit to run it, you'll be able to just swap turbos when you have enough mods to run the 16G. Don't spend money on a tubular Mani at this point, put it towards something else. Smallest twinscroll set up ive seen on a DSM is an HX35 or GT30R, Their may be smaller or not but thats what I've seen so far.

you dont need a install kit for a 14b i have one on my car and didnt use one just need the 1g oil drain line. My 14b at 17psi deff pulls harder and longer than my t25 did at 17 aswell.

At this point a Twin scroll isnt going to be benificial, cause usually they are a rather large turbo and with otu a lot of supporting mods and a $1000 plus manifold it wont benifit you. And the spool difference will only be few hundreds of rpms really. with a 16g you see full boost like 3500's? Thats pretty quick and packs alot of punch. Im only at 16 psi w/ my evo 3 and it packs a wallop, and these dont even come alive till 20+ psi.

and yes, later evo model turbos came twin scroll but no evo3 turbos did, and for the later model evo 16gs it would take alot of fabwork to make it work and isnt worth it when you can get good performance out of an evo3 that is direct bolton no mods.

Twin scroll in not new the have been doing this with diesel trucks for decades. It does seem to have its benefits. You may have to go it alone as its fairly new for gasoline cars!

Mitsubishi OEM turbo specifications (including flow rates) - evolutionm.net

According to the site ALL Evos' 4-8 are twin scroll from the factory. So you would have your pick to choose from. There was also a member a while ago who fitted an Evo twin scroll turbo on a DSM. Took a bit of work to do.

Also the 1500 RPM seems highly exagerated. JusMX141 may have more info on the RPM part of it but I would suggest maybe 500-700RPM difference between a single scroll and a twin scroll of the same model turbo.

Besides, if the turbo came on 1500RPM sooner you would be hitting boost at like 1500 RPM. It would be on/off probably more so than the t-25 is.

thanks all, yea I've been looking around, for my price range 14b or 16g is the way to go. Just one more crazy idea I've been thinking about, what about twin t25's or 14b's? 2 t25 should make close to 50lbs/min, run one off cyl 1,4 and the other off 2,3. Just an idea, my concern is oiling 2 turbos and cost LOL, I like to dream though..

I had that thought once, never thought it through to much though cause if it would work, we would see it more often. And i think spool would slow down some, sure they arent big turbos, but since your only running them off 2 cylinders, it basically just double the load needed to spin them up. just my .02

The twin scroll 16g are found in the evo 8, 9 and mr.. X is a different turbo Ibelieve. You have to clock the snail and make/buy a custom headers from vendors, few vendors here has one. The twin scroll on 9mr puts down the same hp similar to a 20g, but spools way faster. But the headers cost a fortune. I wouldn't mind owning one it's just too expensive.:sneaky:

just for reference.

14b spools around 2000 cannot remember what peak tq rpm is
16g spools around 2500 peak tq on my car with the 16g and 9:1 is about 3800

evo 3 16g is slightly later depending on a few factors.

rule of thumb is, larger turbo spools slower. If it spools faster, you will lose some top end with higher boost due to back pressure cause it usually has a smaller A/R to help it spool faster.
(correct me if I missed anything or wrong about anything here)
