OP--feel free to move this thread and let me know. I am not sure where i should post this, but it does have to do with tuning.??

I have search and search and searched our site to gather all the info to build a easy simple data cable for 1g dsm. I will be building it in the morning. From all I have read here it really is not hard at all to do. At this point I know that this cable set up should work for the 91 to 93 cars, we will know for sure tomorrow!

I am wondering who else has made there own cables? Also how many that did build there the way i am had a hard time with it working???

the following is the set up I will be putting together tomorrow:

Will you be hooking this up to a PC? If so, you'll need a null modem, or to set it up like this

If you know anything about soldering, it's self explanatory.

Here is a really good way to test if you've got the right transmit and receive pins.

"carefully short pins 2 & 3. This performs a "loopback" test where the serial signal should go out from the computer, through the short and back into the computer again."
http://www.msextra.com/doc/ms3/General_Pix/serial_shorted.JPG

Use hyperterminal to send yourself text messages
"ii. When Hyperterm appears, click on the red telephone icon, and enter a save file name (anything you want, say, "megasquirt").

iii. When the "Connect To" dialog comes up, select under the "Connect Using" option the COM port to which the DB-9 cable is connected, i.e., COM1 or COM2. Do not worry about any of the other settings. Click OK."

then in the send box you type whatever you want. If you have it setup right it will loop back. You can put the diode on the wrong pin and only be able to transmit, I did that, frustrating!

Keyspan USB to serial only. You can get others that may work, but the keyspan is worth the money to know that it will work every time.

Thanks for the reply tkelly. I think the first picture you linked to is the same as mine right? I'm glad you gave me the other picture tho, because is that a usb to rs232 in the hand in the picture? Also pin 5 on the rs232 is the ground to jump off of?

Wait a second, does the 91 gsx have the type connector I have shown?????

Well I am at a still on the project because I tried to make one with a usb cable. Long story short fried my labtop! Well I guess thats what i get for going away from my plan. I should have just used a adapter from rs232 to usb. I am still not stoping on building one and posting a how to with all the info from everyones ideas, so feel free to pitch ideas around on this one..... I will be getting a new laptop on mon. and there goes most of my upgrade for this tax check.
