[Resolved] How to make your own 1G data logger cable

Do it the way the site KPT4321 posted tells you, not all computers will work with the above version.

Sorry I'm being a HUGE jerk and bringing a 5 year old post back from the dead, but there's relevant information to my question here.

I have a 1990 TSI and the simple cable doesn't work. Should I try making the harder one? And will it work with my palm pilot?

Hak, I've yet to figure out how a USB cable would even attach to a Palm Device.

Not all Palm devices work as 1G dataloggers, what do you have. You could have a bad logger cable, or issues with the hotsync cable, or a problem with the device/software. Building an active cable isn't going to fix either of the last two.

I made the cable myself, it's perfect, quadruple checked. The hotsync cable is new too, and worked fine with my computer. And I have one of the recommended palms, can't remember the name off the top of my head.

And I don't mind building a cable so long as it WORKS.

I don't mind taking a picture, but my brother's two years into electrical engineering so if he wired a diode backwards he will never live it down.

While I dig up my camera and the like, is it common for 1990s to not accept these kinds of cables?

EDIT: I JUST took it apart to find a broken wire. Stupid hair size wires breaking. I'm going to remake it really quick and try again, but I'm pretty sure it broke when I was taking it out of my dash (I had it all routed).

No, 90's have some issues with the auto-on versions of the passive cables but not the simple ones shown on the site.

I wish there was a 'Make a Datacable on your DSM for complete idiots' out there. I know how to solder, but that drawing might as well be hieroglyphs as far as what parts to buy, at least to the layman. Is there a really dumbed down version of this floating out there that explains what the pyramid and the zipper mean on that drawing? I guess there's a good reason why I'm not an electrical engineer! :D

Here ya go! I built one like this with little trouble, and it was my first attempt at soldering. I had a hard time finding the db9 connector like he used and had to spend a lot of time stripping the end of an old pc serial cable.

I'll make one if you really think it'll help.

I appreciate the offer - I really want to build it myself though. As soon as your USB cable is done with testing, I'll be all over that though!

1stGenTSi - That's exactly what I'm looking for - thanks! I just needed the shapes translated into parts that I need to buy. I'm an absolute idiot when it comes to electrical diagrams like that.

I'm assuming this cable will work on a laptop?

The pyramid is a diode.
The zipper is a resistor.

Both are members of the family of passive electronics, the other two major ones being the capacitor and the inductor.

Okay, fixed the wire, and it must've been broken the whole time. It works great now and I'm an idiot :D Thanks for the help anyway guys.

No problem, but that ebay $8 cable only has 1 connection you need. your going to need a few adapters to make that work with your pc. Last i checked the adapters were close to 30 a pc. The only other cable like that one i know of was $75 last time i looked, its been a while though. Odb1 to usb is so nice. If you read the thread about the cable there is $23 in parts alone and that's a bulk price. The cable even has a an activity light so to show its connected. I mean whats $30, better that then the hassle involved, atleast to me haha. Either way gl
