i have a 6 bolt swap with a Late 96+ transmission with the serial staring in K ending in NPZT ....
I heard ANY 5SPD AWD tranny would fit.
Is that Bullspit?
or what..

And what would you do?
im looking for STOCk so i can just sell the car.
i dont give 2 sh*ts if the tranny is used.

Today i was driving to celebrate easter with my family and hit a little stretch of road i like to drive on so i hit the gas and got to 3rd around 6.5-7k rpms then accidentally hit 2nd gear...all i hear after that is BRAAAAAAH!!!! sounded like a yamaha banshee scared me sh*tless. i pull over for a second then take off and notice it hard as hell to shift into gear.
after driving a little i hear grinding..not ordinary grinding i mean nasty grinding ,like what you would hear from a 65 manual gmc pickup. i barely made it back home with the car and there she remains. it wot go into any gear without grinding and makes a loud sawing noise after 3k rpms on all gears.
Wtf happened? did i jack the gears up? do i nee a whole new tranny ,rebuild or what?:barf: i really dont wanna spend more than 500$ im just gonna sell it.

Any 2g transmission will fit, but you will need the right transfer case to match the transmission.

95-96 transmissions have a different final drive than 97-99 transmissions so they require a different geared transfer case to make the ratio's correct to match up with the rear diff. All 5 speeds use the same rear diff.

so in other words i need a 90-96 awd 5 spd tranny?

If you don't want to buy another transfer case than yes. The other option is to put the ring gear and final drive out of the 95-96 transmission in a 97-99 transmission if that's all you can fine. That involves taking the transmission apart though.

Id say it could be your clutch, you'll through a rocker arm or blow a clutch before something in your trans when miss shifting like that!

okay understood. thanks Bryan, i appreciate your time.
i'd like to see what he has to say.

what do you think dave?
i was only going about 50-60 in 3rd at 6-7k then hit 2nd gear.
im happy my motor didn't blow up.

Does the transmission shift thru the gears fine with the engine turned off?
yeah, i found out because had to turn the car off to reverse out of my drive way.

It could very well just be that the clutch disc is coming apart. Usually if there is an internal problem than it will present itself with the engine running or not.

Thats not fast enough to really hurt anything in your trans, hell i was shifting out of 2nd gear at over 75 mph at the track. Like i said i think its your clutch.

That makes alot of sense, to be honest
i am a complete pessimist when it comes to dsm's .
One thing i do know is that when i first purchased the car ,shifting was kind of hard. i had to force the shifter into the gears like really force it in there.
it would grind a lil if i didnt have the clutch pedal mashed to the floor.

My clutch pedal vibrates now also.
one more thing i also discovered the clutch pressed all the way down and i have to pull it out to normal.

You would need a 91-96 transmission to use a 91-96 transfer case with in a 1g, or a 95-96 trans/transfer case in a 2g or a 97-99 trans/transfer case in a 2g. You can use a 97-99 trans and Tcase in a 1g, but they are harder to find and normally more expensive. A 1990 trans and Tcase can be used in any 1g 90-94, but you would need 90 shifter cables and shifter assembly.

If using a 2g trans in a 1g, you will need to cut off the shifter counterweight to clear the lower radiator hose.

You either have a wrecked shaft bearing, a wrecked TOB, or a toasted clutch or flywheel bolts coming out.

Pull your trans and find the issue.

yeah thats the info i read on a few web searches thanks for confirming.
But before anything i need a small diagnosis
To get an idea of what im tackling.
The gears grind and it is hard to shift.
you can hear the gears grind and a loud sawing noise afer 3k rpms in any gear.
the pedal vibrates and i almost cant put the car into reverse.

So before you cause anymore damage to the car. Park it and pull the transmission before it ends up costing you a rebuild from trying to slam the car into gear with a clutch that is not disengaging.

Yeah I did. I got it home ASAP.
I hope it's clutch related .
jacks and shepards prices scare me .
Do seem extremely fair but it's gonna be a little before I can spend that much. :/

Any good transmission removal and reinstallation articles on here

Look what i found! O EM GEE!!
what the hell.

The flywheel came off wit the the clutch disc and Pressure plate.
They are alright but the flywheel is gone .
The bolts were completely stripped and on the block see as you can the threads were also shredded.
can i replace these parts or do i need a whole block?

What's my next move?

To answer your first question, if you have a 2G, you have to use a 2G tranny because it hold the motor mounts.

To answer your last question, if the crank is stripped, youll need a new crank. And it isnt something you can do in the car, if your sane. Its a whole lot easier to pull it and replace it.

Sorry man.

so thats the ####ing crank....
son of a bi***....:barf:
what about rethreading it?
would that be retarded?

Unfortunately, one of my "things that could be the cause" was correct -- flywheel bolts. That sucks dude.

You need a new crank, flywheel (please do not buy another fidanza; please use a stock flywheel or an ACT streetlite flywheel), flywheel bolts (for the future, always use new bolts, loctite red with 100ft/lbs torqued evenly), and while you are in there, I would probably do new main bearings rod bearings, and thrust bearing, along with new gaskets, seals, and take your time to do the service updates on the car (timing belt, oil pump/gears, water pump, tensioners, etc.).

This is not a cheap fix; you are likely going to find it cheaper to purchase an entire differnt long-block.

The OEM crank is around $700, the flywheel will be a couple hundred, the flywheel bolts will be another $15, and then all the miscellaneous stuff will add up quickly.
