why do we keep dsm's

I kinda feel your pain honda. I bought the car with a blown engine, black 95 tsi like yours, put together a 7 bolt that failed about 4k miles later and it was just daily driven, took it down for maintenance and found a lot of bad. So I'm building my 6 bolt I had purchased in between the 7 bolt, to build up over time right? Well I had to rush that together, lots of money later it's together and in the car. Everything done right, machined, new this that, spins a rod bearing in 8 miles due to something jacked up on a rod journal, now its dead in the water again. Needs a new rod due to the rod seizing on the wrist pin. I don't want a race car just something to drive...all in all it's worth it in the end, just takes time and money.

A lot of other cars have things going for them that I like. But DSMs look great, and I'm trying to diversify my knowledge. Until this car, I've known how to do bare minimum maintenance on my vehicles. This one forced me to learn. How did it do that? At least one previous owner treated my car badly, and I couldn't stand to let an otherwise fine vehicle go to waste. It might have come to that if not for this community, no one near me knows jack about these cars, even though they are relatively simple.

I've seen a few NT 2Gs around, one or two turbo (no clue on the drivetrain), and only recently, three other 1Gs. One was the automatic, naturally aspirated twin of mine. Except her paint was better and my seats are better. DSMs are very unique. An all-wheel drive coupe powered by the sickest four cylinder to ever hit the streets? Yes ma'am!

Drive a bone stock 1g AWD. That's why we keep these cars. Even when they are stock they are still an absolute blast to drive. And, I absolutely love the look of a 1ga talon. Put a set of a Volk te37's on em and they look stunning.

i keep mine because i'm not an a**hole and/or mistreat mine.

Mine isn't your typical dsm i guess

Thats because yours is a weak 420a Lol. Not a true DSM. It's like a good looking retard.... You don't mind looking at it, but if it does anything else you become embarrassed.

I keep my DSM ( 98 GSX ) because it is the sexiest car ever ( in my opinion ):sneaky: Everyone in my area drive "American Muscle" or civic. So my car stands out for sure. And if it does break down I know how to fix it, and it dosnt cast an arm and a leg.

I totally agree!! Indy is full of ricers and muscle cars. So, a 1G definitely stands out. Of course, mine is called "the mistress" by my wife. I am 45, 2 kids out of the house, one 19 and still at home (with a 90 TSi AWD) and a 17 and 13 year old in the house. My car is the project. It was 200 bucks (TB went on my son, bent some valves, broke another and punched a hole in the cylinder). My wife and I (yes, she got greasy and helped) installed a NA 6-bolt in it in the driveway last summer, and never looked back. :hellyeah:

The muscle cars around here have come to realize that they have a little work to do to cleant this little 4-banger's clock. The older muscle guy's respect the DSM power, the young punk muscle and ricers are clueless.

Lol yes 420a has no room for talk for being a stock 4. Get it turbo and you will found out what a DSM is.

I keep my 99 because it has been a reliable daily driver since I bought it almost a year ago with 178K on it and it has over 206K on it now. I like the way it handles and how I can weave through traffic. Gas mileage isn't too bad at 25-27mpg. It's a comfortable car. I think it's one of the best looking cars of the 90's. The all wheel drive laughs at any driving condition. The car is cheap and easy to mod. There's a good following and some good forums to get info or parts on. I could keep going but those are a few reasons why I keep my Eclipse.

Idk...I ask myself that every day. I bought my current gst one year ago, It blew up on the way home, then I dropped a new motor 5-6 months later, the new motor I payed for is having so many problems its only been driven about 580 miles and it blew out the water-pump seals...So its been driven 580 miles since ive bought it. The sad thing, it was bought to be a DD. Well, screw that noise i guess.

I got my fist dsm when i was 17, 11 years later im still messing around with them, even with all the problems i have had i cant seem to stop. I love them, LOL.

I keep mine bc it's such a pos that no one will buy it from me LOL... Not really I like mine because you never see clean ones anymore if any at all they are becoming a dyeing breed, and I like cars that not everyone has...

It does seem like dsm's are going away, i have been looking for a while to buy one that needs work and there is not to many around anymore.

Every Saturday I drive through a town that in the summer has some sort of fund raiser car wash going on. Everytime I drive by in my dsm the girls start waiving their signs faster and try to get me to turn in.

It puts a smile on my face everytime. That's why I love my dsm.

I keep mine as a personal accomplishment. Not many people can say they put their car together from ground up. Nothing can compare to the internal gratification after a long night working on it or someone asking who did all the work for you.

Same here, I bought mine for 700 with a blown engine when I was 18. I'm 23 now. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it, I'm too proud of it considering I only had basic knowledge of working on a car when I was putting it together. A FSM and reading goes a LONG way..

The only time its left me stranded was when the battery died at work. I walked over to advanced, bought a new one, installed, fired right up and drove it home. I knew I shouldn't have put that old battery from my friends garage in my car but hell, it was free and lasted 4 months. This is more user error than anything.

Now for my friend and brother who got theirs after me, they haven't had anywhere near as much luck as me. My brother has had his almost for two years and has yet to drive it. My friend; his motor spun a bearing and has been sitting for almost a year now. I think I can safely blame these two cases on the fact they smoke a ridiculous amount of ganja though.

Wow! ian ROTF, you kill me. I keep mine because im just a glutton for punishment, that and I've had them for so long. I have also gotten a number of my friends and aquantances involved in DSM's and when that happens they do the same. It keeps the fire going. Its also nice when you can blow the doors off a corvette stoplight to stoplight.

Many reasons why I keep mine.

1. Cheaper to build then a Honda.
2. More reliable then a Honda.
3. Looks better then a Honda.
4. Required less work at 1500 miles a week then my civic.
5. Has that sweet old car smell.
6. Started everytime unlike my civic. ( until I took it apart for some secrets.)
7. Nothing on street tires pulls harder than 21 year old awd dsms. (made in 89 4 months from 21 years old.)

That's just a few. But workin in a shop and working on the car gets tiring but it's all worth it when your hear the sweet meoldy of the 4g63.

If you have the tools, knowledge, and ability to make these cars work, they are as much fun per $ as anything out there.

I'm not sure that i would own any highly modded turbo car without something else to DD when issues arise...which happens with all makes and models when you start to push things.

It's still made in the same building even though DSM disbanded in what, late 1994, 1995.

To be honest the 420a isn't a bad motor once it's built properly and it gets better MPG than out turbo 4g63. How about the 4g64 spyder, is that still a DSM?

So a DSM has to be turbo according to you Tyler correct? So neither the 420a 2g or the 4g64 N/T Spyder is turbo. Only the turbo model of either the T/E/L are DSMs eh?

Just trying to clarify...

As for me, it's just the car I've been trying to find for so long and have always wanted one. I love the look of the stock body on the Talon, it's got great power and it's AWD. Not to mention it's a very affordable car for what you are getting out of it with either power or visual.

To clarify a DSM was anything made by the conjunction of Mitsubishi and Chrysler. Which would be Mitsubishi, eagle, Plymouth. Even though everyone only sees DSM as being E/T/L there are others. Mitsubishi and Chrysler split at the end of 98. That would be why there was no talon made in 99. Only the 10th aniversery eclipse. Understand diamond- (tri-diamond) star- Chrysler star made of diamonds.

There's many factors affecting the reliability of your dsm... A few being how hard you drive it, how often you keep up on the maintinence(oil change, worn belts/hoses replaced, engine flushes and fluids etc) road conditions and the quality of parts and work you put into it....as long as you keep up with all these things and look out for them you should have a very reliable car..then maybe you wouldn't wana ditch the Dsm for a Honda civic LOL
