Why do 1g's only have 180 hp vs 2g 210 hp from the factory?

1g cars only have 7.8:1 compression ratio whereas the 2g cars got a bump to 8.5:1.

This is it right here.

I have had 1g and 2g both turbo and I will tell you right now the 2g pulls harder stock for stock.. Also the T25 boost extremely smooth...but still sucks.
 
180 HP were for the turbo automatics since they run 390cc injectors and a small Mitz 13B turbo.

The 6bolts, being of the 7.8:1 compression with 450cc injectors were 195hp with Mitz 14B turbos

The 7bolts, being of the 8.5:1 compression with 450cc injectors got bumped up to 215 with Garrett T-25

Wait. Is the compression difference a 1g/2g thing or a 6 bolt/7 bolt thing?

I have a 1g 7 bolt so I'm curious...
 
6 bolts use a lower compresion ratio but better turbo.

Also the intake system was completly redesigned. The 2 system flows better until the intercooler. The intercooler is a larger core but more restrictive on air flow. Then again after the intercooler until the throttle body. Bigger elbow but smaller actual throttle body.

They had to reinvent the wheel because apparently your standard wheel didn't work well enough.
 
Compression was increased when the 7 bolts came out in mid 1992 .. being the 1Gb series and 2g's until 1999. Then, all was dropped when 3G's came out in 2000 and the EVO took the 4G63 over completely.

I thought the compression for ALL 1g's were the same?
 
Nope, for the 6bolt turbos had a larger throttle intake and large intake ports for more volume of air and with the lower compression, one can run regular unleaded.

With 7bolts, they made the intake smaller along with smaller intake port on the head for more higher flow of air, and along with the higher compression, premimum unleaded was needed.

I'm a 6 bolt and can easily run regular fuel with no problems.

Okey, then I have a question: I've seen gas gauges on 1gb's that do list "premimum unleaded fuel only" within the gauge and I was under the impression that the 8.5:1 pistons were used then, whereas the 1Ga's were labelled, like mine, "unleaded fuel only" due to the lower 7.8:1 ratio. What was changed then to have the fuel requirements changed then?

I never noticed the difference, but they probably realized they (mitsu engineers) were getting issues from people not running premium so they added it to cover their ass for any damage that could occur from running regular unleaded. I personally would never run anything less than premium in ANY turbocharged car.;)
 
I run premium only. Not only is is safer I also get better mileage as well. It is more at the pump of course but the extra mileage makes it worth it

No one mentioned, but I think the 2G's came with 11PSI preset boost, while the1G's were only 9 PSI...

Second, someone mentioned, that 2g's are better...
That is true, but only ouside/looks and shape.

Nothing beats 6 bolts the way they were originally designed...
 
Its also way easier to work under the hood of a 1g.

Boost setting difference was the first thing that came to mind. I'm kind of surprised nobody mentioned it sooner. Maybe because everyone usually disconnects the boost control solenoid & forgets what the factory boost was ROFL
