Which/What gauges should I get? [Merged 12-6]

So it sounds like besides boost, I should get oil pressure or wideband o2 gauge. If you had to choose between these two, which one would you go with and why. And like I mentioned earlier, I'm getting a wideband no matter what and dsm link, just wondering if I should install the gauge for it, or go with the oil pressure gauge instead?

hi all,

I have a 95 talon tsi awd with the following mods:

3" turboback w/dp. hard ic pipes, greddy type s bov, injen style air intake. stock turbo with stock boost. I plan to go with a big 16g, intercooler, injectors, fp, dsmlink (typical mods). Knowing that I will have a boost controller that shows vacuum and boost, which three guages are recommended out of the following:

Oil pressure, oil temperature, A/F (not wideband), boost, egt, coolant temperature

I know there are other threads like this but nothing exactly that I've seen.

thanks
meek

Boost (unless the controller will be in plain view where you can constantly look at it), coolant, egt. Do not buy an A/F gauge - they're useless.

Boost/vac, Oil pressure, Wideband O2. Skip shelling out for an EGT, when a WBO2 will give you a better idea of what's happening inside the cylinders anyway. Unless you're going to be logging a Zeitronix directly into the ECU via DSMLink, on one of the 'spare' inputs.

At that point, go for boost/vac, oil pressure, and oil temperature. An EGT is superfluous when you have a wideband O2.

Seconded on the A/F gauge thing though... they're a ricer lightshow. Only thing they do is tell you that your stock O2 sensor is still cycling. Don't waste the money.

Wow! You guys are great. I went ahead and ordered the glowshift gauges from ebay w/the gray pillar pod. I purchased boost/vac, oil pressure, oil temperature. Thanks again!

boost, oil pressure and wideband I would say. Another nice one to have is a water temp gauge, especially if you have a fmic like me and it seems to overheat a little sometimes.

There's no reason to have an EGT gauge with a wideband O2. If your air to fuel mixture is good, you aren't going to run hot. Only thing an EGT tells you is when ONE cylinder is running lean (or EXTREMELY rich), causing the temperatures to rise.

He'd already ruled out a wideband O2, hopefully as he's going to be logging a 'headless' WBO2 through DSMLink once he gets it in. The cluster water temp gauge generally suffices to let you know when you're running a bit too hot, but the stock oil pressure gauge doesn't give you any real idea how much pressure you're running. And with no oil temp gauge, you could heat the oil well past its shear strength/viscosity limit and damage the engine, all without losing oil pressure or throwing any kind of trouble sign.

The stock water temp gauge is pretty horrible though. It goes from halfway on the gauge to 3/4's with only a 4 degree temp change. Seems to stay around half all the way up to around 217 degrees. I know a couple of people with dsm's and they said the same thing. So if you ever overheat at all an aftermarket one is a good idea. I need one due to my fmic restricting a lot of airflow.

I am looking for a direct replacement for the A pillar I would rather not just mount to the existing. I remember seeing an article on here about that before and I can not seem to find it. So if you could point me in the right direction for it. Also what gauges would you reccomend getting with it not brand just boost, etc. , etc. I know alot of people have just ran the cheap ebay ones. Thanx for your help in advance.

I'd recommend (as would a lot of people on here) to get the Lotek A pillar as it is a direct replacement. It can be bought from www.gaugepods.com.

As far as what gauges to put in the A pillar, there is a huge thread on here that would've been found with a very easy search. Here it is - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10245&highlight=which+gauges

I'm not going to post my choices since I don't think we need another thread (I've seen at least a dozen of them started).

Here's another interesting read since you're looking into getting gauges - http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22848&highlight=which+gauges

Or skip the EGT and go straight to a Wideband O2 setup (EGT is useless after you get a WBO2), like the AEM UEGO.

Ok so im going to be buying 3 gauges soon for my gauge pod.I need help with what i should get. I dont wanna spend more than $70 each gauge.

I was going to go to my local autozone and buy the gauges there from autometer.
But i been hearing good reviews from prosport gauges

What do you guys think?

There's a million "which gauges" threads around here. If you can't figure out which gauges you need, try searching to see what others are using.

many people use gauges that other would deem "unnecessary", so it ultimately boils down to personal preference. A good pressure gauge for the intake tract is probably the most important one to have though.

by which gauges, i mean what brand
Autometer,prosport,glowshift?

I been hearin good reviews from prosport

or my local autozone/pepboys for autometer

Hey I am using glowshift gauges from ebay. Cheap and they work. I like the tinted series, nice and dark when the car is just parked on the side of the street!
