what should I get with my dsmlink?

Make sure to do A LOT of engine braking. Take it up to a certain rpm and let off the gas and let the car slow itself. Watch your how many inhg you get on your boost gauge when you do that. IIRC, I hit like 26" or something. It is a "loaded vacuum" that literally sucks the metal flakes off the cyl walls and it goes right out your exhaust. :thumb: Less gets in your oil that way.

This is instead of getting one with a gauge and everything. how much would it cost just for a wideband o2 that wires up to the dsmlink compared with a wideband with a gauge that can wire up to the ecu?
 
Yes, most sensors can be wired up to the ECU to be incorporated in DSMlink. A good bit of people run it just like that with no gauge.

For the Innovate LC-1 it's about $200 for just the sensor and another $200 or so for the gauge (I have the XD-16 and it was close to $400 for the kit which included the gauge, LC-1, o2 sensor, and a few other things).
 
I highly recommend a gauge in the car. It's good to have in the car when you are just puttering around town. I don't carry my laptop with me everywhere I go, so it's good to monitor your AFR's at all times.

The AEM UEGO you asked about should have a gauge with it. IMO you want a gauge in the car even if you log it. When logging in DSMLink some aftermarket gauges don't log corrrectly without a "buffer." ecuinputdata [ECMTuning - wiki] I just ordered one yesterday from ECMtuning because my WB logs at 11.5-11.7 and the gauge reads 10.5-10.7. I would not have know that the log was incorrect if I didn't have the gauge in the car.
 
which is more accurate the gauge or the log?
I am actually not sure. I would think the gauge is correct and there is just some "interference" with the correct value getting to the log. I have my suspicions though. My O2 sensor is at .84-.86, my calc A/F is about 11.2 -11.5 and the WB log says 11.5ish, but my 1g estimates and the WB are in the mid 10s...:confused: I will get it all figured out before I turn the boost up to 25+.

Another thing that I was thinking about was, in the article on how to street tune with the dsmlink, the poster mentioned using an egt to tune. I also read that an egt is not necessary. I know that the egt measures the exhaust temperature. I also read that is was like a warning. How does an egt gauge help to tune?
 
The reason it is recommended to be place 36" or further away is so you don't kill the sensor prematurely from the heat of the turbo. The sensor can be in the muffler and will read the same as if it was in the o2 housing as long as the exhaust doesn't have any leaks before the sensor. The further away it is though the longer it will take to read.
 
I've had my PLX Wideband in the car for 4 years now and it still reads perfectly fine. I have mine located in the downpipe, just after the first main bend that goes to the rear of the car.
 
I think an egt gauge is a waste of money. By the time it shows that the egt is high enough to melt parts damage has already probably been done. Its like when the low ol pressure light comes on, something has most likely already went wrong with the car.

I have one that came with the car. I hooked it up mostly out of curiosity. I don't tune by it, but I glance occasionally to see what the temp is.

Would they be any help to tune?

Not really. All you need is a WB. The egt just lets me see that my AFR is keeping the exhaust gas temps withing range. 1250-1350* while cruising on the highway and not over 1550* during a WOT pull. Nothing spectacular and its just one more thing to try and watch while driving which becomes a PITA in a hurry. I am more interested in rpms & WB and speedo (I guess). When my wife rides in the car I ask her to tell me what the other gauges are reading cause its just too much to keep up with. :D
 
LOL. My car used to scare me all the time. It was slow as crap too. I had a broken injector seal, no boost control, yellow top injectors with out the dsmlink at the time, gas in the oil, and no oil cooler. It was also really loud because I just had the 3'' downpipe on it. I wished that is would be as fast for as loud as it sounded. I didnt even get to feel it run right before I took it all apart. shame. shame. waste of a jdm swap and 1650 dollars
