As this compilation of threads illustrates,
IT DOESN'T REALLY MATTER WHAT OIL YOU USE.
It's the twenty-first century. Metallurgy and lubrication science have both taken such astounding leaps over the last fifty years that virtually all the once-true tales of oils and preferences are obsolete.
If you're seriously interested in what goes into, why, how and how much oil, check http://bobistheoilguy.com/

what oil should i use for a 90talon tsi awd during the winter?

I've always heard break in with conventional oil and then switch to synthetic after break in. Synthetic is to slipery for breaking in an engine.

how fresh is the engine?? if its just been rebilt you DO NOT run synthetic. If its a brand new engine you run 20w-50 regular until about 3k, then switch to synthetic.

it has 500miles on it ,i have been running 10w 30 castrol synthec on the first 300 miles then i switched to 5w 30 valvoline sinthetic. it makes sense to run thicker oil on the break in period im going to do the 20w 50 but since i started with sinthetic should i switch to regular??
p.s i bought most of my setup from chris at sbr , you should send me some stickers :sneaky:

hey guys, just recently purchased talon wondering what motor oil should i use? is there a certain one i should go with depending on miles or is like any synthetic oil good enough?

Yes defently do a search on this one, there a tonn of info on here. Most seem to recommend Mobil1 synthetic & this is what I run all the time. One thing to consider is that if the car has higher miles & has been running reg oil, its not always a good idea to switch to synthetic. Reg oils tend to be dirty but this dirt sometimes helps to plug up oil leaks. When you switch to a synthetic that has alot of cleaning properties it cleans up all this internal "gunk" which may have been sealing things & you may notice your motor now burns oil when it didn't before the synthetic.

I have the 2.3 stroker in my talon. Wondering if I'm perfectly fine running castrol syntec 10W40 or am I making a big no no? if so what oil should I be running? I'd rather look like a dumba$$ asking this question then look like a dumba$$ with a blown motor.

not sure about the 2.3, but I have read that 20w50 is the best to use for our cars.

10w-40 Synthetic is not a bad oil to use. Especially if it's still rather cold in your area. But I run 20w50 year round with no issues. I also have no balance shafts, pretty tight crank clearances, and no oil filter porting. Yet, after warm up there is no issues with oil pressure.

Well after the read of the fp guide. I am
Thoroughly convinced I need to get the car to a 20w-50 oil with high zinc. Time to
Drain the brand spanked new castrol oil I just put in this
Weekend.

Well just picked up the vr1 valvoline 20w-50 let's see how this goes

Figured I would post here instead of making a new thread.

I have been using 5W-30 in my 95 TSi. I know a couple friends use that in their DSM.

In my 1G, I used that Valvoline 20W-50 Race Oil, and several people told me it was a bad idea.

My T-25 is on its death bed. So, I go through a lot of oil. I am trying my damnest to find a 14B or 16G for a good price.

I want to change my oil tomorrow, which oil should I go with?

She is pretty much stock other than a FMIC, hard-pipes, 1G BOV, Walbro 255, and some other small things.

I'm running valvoline 20W50 non synthetic but im makin power and that is where it is recommended, on a stock motor id stick with 10w30, 20w50 might be a little thick for stock power levels.

I'm not familiar with Canadian oil types at all- is there any way to get the test sheets with the ZDDP level of that oil? In the US I'm sure it wouldn't have any zinc, and the thrust systems in our engines and turbos love zinc. Can't get enough of it.

Hey Justin Thanks for the reply that was the wrong oil I got after I looked into it so I returned it and bought this one instead what do you think.

Rix.

Here in the US, if it's an SN-rated oil available at just about any retailer, it will not contain the zinc that 7-bolt crank thrust systems and turbo thrust systems like. Even big-name oils like Mobil 1 aren't what they were as recent as 5 years ago.

If you want to guarantee your oil contains zinc, you should really run a zinc break-in additive in addition to your favorite oil. Don't be fooled by the words "break-in"...you can run it all the time. Our government makes the manufacturer state it's for break-in use only so you don't use it all of time and increase your car's emissions by .000001%.

I know I drive a n/t and everyone here is more directed toward turbo and relation to oils. I picked my car up with 90k, and from the maintenance reports I found the car already had been receiving Mobil 1 synthetic. I noticed that there was some slack in the powerband when pulling 3rd gear. Initially zmax and fresh oil made a difference and helped out a lot. After some research and knowing that my car sat a few years before me I decided to try Lucas stabilizer. That also helped but then I decided to try amsoil signature 5w20. I ran a complete cycle and recently changed the oil again. This time I used amsoil engine flush and a cheap fram filter for the idle cleaning period. Used amsoil filter and synthetic once again, and I can say without a doubt that over the course of the last month I've notice more low end response and a smoother powerband. From now on its amsoil products for me. Doing a tranny flush and replacing with amsoil as well here soon.

Btw, if you do amsoil, pay the $20 for the yearly membership, I've already saved at least $40 in the first 6 months.
