what are you holset guys running for intercooler setups

Hey guys, so I will be running a Holset hx40 on my eclipse like alot of people on here. Right now I'm trying to decide what intercooler kit I and going to get. I was looking at kits and I want one that can grow with my setup and the car progresses. I was looking at the ETS, and VRSF kit, but thought i would ask what everyone else is running and would love to have some data to support it. My car will be daily driven some, but I would like be able to go up to near 800-900 hp with the intercooler setup i purchase or more.


I have a 98 gsx,

with a mod list that follows:

Motor:
2.3l 6 bolt bored .20 over
Ross piston eagle rods 9:1 compression
all ARP hardware

Head:
6 bolt head
1mm oversized Ferra valve freshly rebuilt
BC 280 cams
BC springs
BC adjustable cam gears
ARP head studs with stock MLS gasket
Magnus smim
FFTEC 75mm throttle body

engine management:
Ecmlink v3 full with speed density

Fuel:
-8an feed, -6 return all steel braided
FIC fuel rail
Aeromotive AFPR
Walbro 450lph fuel pump
2160cc injectors or bigger
The fuel hats have had new lines brazed on them and the siphon has been ported out

Turbo:
Holset hx40, completely stock, freshly rebuilt with a 19cm exhaust housing
JMF Fabrication divided t4 top mount turbo manifold
Twin 40 mm Synapse waste gates
Synapse BOV

Drivetrain:
Mostly stock for now with solid sub frame bushings and all new poly suspension bushings, soon to have evo brakes, 6 puck un-sprung act clutch with act2900 pressure plate and act
flywheel

I will be upgrading the transmission and transfer car with a shep or jacks transmission kit, It just bottom of the tot tum pole right now, I really wanna get the car running
 
I'm running a Greddy/trust FMIC core that's meant for a Supra and rated supposedly at 1psi drop at 1150 lb/min air flow. I'm not sure about those limits because i am not making 1000hp worth of air but what i can say is going from my old core that's been the standard for GN, RX-7 and turbo mustang guys since the early 90's i went from seeing temps go from ~95* IAT's at the TB elbow rising up to 140* F after a long 1-2-3 pull to now I cna do a 1-2-3 pull and maybe gain 3-5* F above what the ambient temp was at the TB elbow (where IAT sensor is), if i'm cruising on a cool night and intake temps are near what ambent are or within a few degrees above (say on a 65* night i can be tooling around seeing 70* at the IAT)n well if i stop and it heat soaks at all i can actually do a third gear pull and drop the temps to within a few degeres of ambient again
 
i run a HX-40 and my intercooler is a 24''x12''x4''thick with 3'' inlet and 3'' outlet. and the brand... OBX slightly generic, but works damn good. my intake air temps are always golden. my intercooler piping is full 3'' from the turbo to the TB. its custom built and super short route. building the pipes yourself will save you alot of money
 
Up to the limits of the hx40, I say vrsf. Beyond that, I'd go with a 4" thick or larger ETS. Btw, hx40 isn't going to get you anywhere near 800-900hp. I'd say 700 maximized setup and output.
 
I run an ebay core as well. Intake temps dont rise at all from doing a 2nd and 3rd pull. Its a pretty big core, my small one I would see temps start rising immediately.
 
Treadstone all the way! 22" x 12.5" x 4" (p/n is TR1245) is mine, also its prefect will be perfect for your horse power! Treadstone FMIC is what my brothers compound talon set up has. Good up to 860HP
 
If you are looking to make 800-1khp in the future consider a core that has been proven to make that much hp. ETS will help you pick one out, that Greddy/Trust core sounds good, you could call up Bell Turbo Systems. It is good to recognize that at those hp levels you're not going to get away with an ebay core, no matter who has repackaged it.

If this is drag only, or if you will lower the hp for street use, consider an air to water IC system. Consult manufacturers and tell them what you want to do and see what they say. You can get sub ambient temps into your intake manifold with nothing but a bag of ice in the water reservoir. I am willing to sacrifice a little hp on the street to have water condensating on the IC pipes at the track.

Consider 3" intercooler piping too. I would imagine it becomes more important the longer the pipes are.

I realize the turbo should max out around 700, but when i go bigger I don't want to have to replace the intercooler and pipes, I wanna buy them and be done :D

I been reading on intercoolers and piping for a while and my understanding i that 2.5" is more than sufficient, but I'm no expert, just trying to figure out what to get

The car will be daily driven alittle, and be more of a weekend warrior LOL. I have actually been talking to robert from ETS about getting a kit and what would work. They suggested the super short 12" race intercooler with a 5" core. I think I'm gonna bite the over 1k price for it since they are proven and are awesome kits.

Before this complete rebuild of the car I was rocking a bone stock 7 bolt motor with 272's with a big evo3 16g clipped and ported with a ebay intercooler core from cx racing and custom piping done by me, with the fuel sysyem to handle it.

I thought about using my old cx racing intercooler that 31x12x3, but honestly I have decided to spend the money and get a good kit, it doesnt how much boost you make if you cant cool it.

Not sure about mine probably a ebay core came with the car and the holset on it.

I used to have a ebay kit, but I don't think it will be enough

how are you reading your temps, I've seen alot of people using cheap radioshack temperature kits for houses to, but i want something better and more reliabe.

I run a punishment fmic. Works great but I'm going a bit bigger once I save some cash.

I looked at their kits, but idk, I've heard mixed reviews from them.

if your brother is the oe with the white talon and twin holsets, that thing i s beast, I think i might run compound turbos next.



Also as stated as a reply, What are you guys using to monitor temperatures, I would like to see before and after intercooler, but don't want to spend a ton of money, and if it helps any, yes I have dsm link

Dude, I don't know if you've been told yet but you NEED a better return line for that Holset. It is supposed to be at least -12an. Some get away with -10an. I would read up on that before you blow the turbo and get really pissed off. For intercoolers, I've read that the VRSF intercooler has done very well with holsets. I will hopefully have results with a 24v GReddy kit soon.

Dude, I don't know if you've been told yet but you NEED a better return line for that Holset. It is supposed to be at least -12an. Some get away with -10an. I would read up on that before you blow the turbo and get really pissed off. For intercoolers, I've read that the VRSF intercooler has done very well with holsets. I will hopefully have results with a 24v GReddy kit soon.

Actually I have done quite alot of research for the holset install, been working on it for a while. I already have a -12 fittings setup, with a -12 bung welded to my oild pan and I have a restrictor ready to go for my feed line. I also have the car setup to read the oil pressure going into the turbo to monitor it and make sure i dont mess it up. I appreciate the headups up, didn't mean to sound like a dick if i did LOL.

Water injection and don't worry about it

I'm gonna run a snow kit with the smart controller and all that jazz, just havent bought it yet.

same with my vrsf kit :D

I am running a VRSF Front Mount with short route piping. Fits good and works well

and stated above. I've seen a ton of results and data on the ETS kits because alot of people in high hp cars run them, but haven't seen a ton on the vrsf kit.

cxracing.com 29x11x3 intercooler and 2.5" piping kit. I've had it for 5 years. HX-35, 35psi, 53-54lb/min. Zero complaints!

thats what i have, had, initially i was gonna keep the core and make my own intercooler piping kit, but I think a better core will be needed.
 
VRSF is a pretty great core, I'm running one myself. Not too sure on its max efficiency range but 900HP is a tall order anyway. As already stated though, ETS is proven for that range. You just have to consider that the price difference is astounding. IMO the VRSF with meth injection will get you well beyond the HP you'll ever want.
