Yes sounds pretty simple. So pull spark plug off number 1 cylinder insert screwdriver. And turn till its at its highest peak and check top end timing marks correct.

I suggest pulling all 4 plugs. No need to make it more difficult. With the plugs out you really only face friction and valvetrain resistance when youre cranking it by hand. Its way way easier. You may know this, just making sure, tryin to help ya out.

And btw, anything Bogus says: Listen to. He does this for a living, not a hobby. Dude knows his stuff like no one else on the site, save for a handful of guys.
 
The sparkplug hole and screwdriver (or even a long straw, 1/4" dowel and similar) trick is the easy way to find TDC, if you know how to read the cam sprocket marks along with it.

Ussually with a bent valve you will hear a ticking, this is because on of your cylinders is missing. Get a peice of paper, start your car and put the paper flat against your exhaust, if it's missing the paper will be sucked in slightly when you motor fires on the missing cylinder. Usually on a healthy motor it will always push the paper outwards.

Easy to do if u can't compression test.

I think I have the same problem, I bought a non running car knowing no compression in the #4 cylinder, I tried turning the motor over by hand with a wrench and it rotates a little bit and stops, hopefully the valves are all that is hurt. What the best place to buy new valves from? The block is SBR stage 1 with 8.5:1 so if I'm going to rebuild the head I may aswell put decent parts into it.
