Upgrading the turbo next week

So my t25 is going out which is fine because I was planning on getting rid of it anyways, but its gonna throw my build plan out of whack a little. Anyways I've been dead set on the evo3 16g for the past few months but now I'm not so sure if it's gonna be big enough my goal for the car is 350 whp and from what i've read the 16g is only good for that at the crank and falls short of around 300 at the wheels. My question is go bigger? I'd like to be running 23 to 26lbs of boost.

You will be fine on the evo 3. Less lag than a 20g, but will fall short of a 400hp goal for sure.350 is doable,but will require a few supporting mods to do 350.

A 2g guy put a 20g with only cams and got 287 or so hp, on everything else being stock and untuned.So 20g is never a bad idea for a little more room to grow. than the 16g.Or there is also the 68hta, or the fp big t28.If price is the issue, 20g is my pick.

You have a 99 so my suggestion for tuning is evoscan, or ceddy mods(ecu flash).

Don't build your hp goals out of psi's. Every car varies.

Thanks ya bone stock at the moment with a ported intake mani, I have a 3" o2 dump with external waste gate, 3 downpipe w cat delete 3 inch back to muffler (not installed yet), buying the new turbo this weekend with fmic short route 2.5 piping, 255lph fp and was gonna do 650 or 750 injectors and as for tuning I'm either going with ecu flash or dsm link,

The Evo 3 16G can get you there, or very close to it on pump gas with the right supporting mods and tune. At 25-26psi, it should be able to flow enough air to get you to, or near your goal.

For a similar price you could get Turbo Lab to build you a TD05H 20G. Which is essentially a 16G with a 20G wheel. I've been running one for a while and its a fun little turbo, I've logged 41 lbs/min at 23psi. They make peak airflow at ~28psi. Going this route would help you obtain your power goal a little easier, for the simple fact that it flows more air than an Evo 3 16G.

They have many options when it comes to Mitsubishi turbos, talking about your goals with them would be the best way to go about it.

Don't build your hp goals out of psi's.

Actually, this is exactly how you'd pick the ideal turbo for your build.

You choose the boost level you want to run, then consider the horsepower you want to make...and choose a turbo that is most-efficient at that boost level so you'll get to your horsepower goal without generating too much hot air.


For instance- an Evo III 16G at 26psi is extremely inefficient, but you're forced to run lots of boost with that turbo to get to your horsepower goal. Excessive boost increases the shaft loads and thrust loads beyond what the turbo is designed to see under normal operation, drastically shortening it's lifespan.

^ and that is exactly what I was thinking when I was trying to decide! The same goes with audio equipment if you push the amp or head unit to max wattage to get the sound level you want it sends an unclear distorted signal. So better to go bigger and turn it down. However I found an rebuilt evo3 16g for 300 with a j pipe and considering where my budget is at the moment I couldn't pass it up.
