So when I got my 2g GST the turbo had a massive oil leak, and to fix said oil leak I replaced the turbo but figured since I’m replacing might as well upgrade, got a 16g, which is currently far too much boost and I’m hitting fuel cut at anything about 4K rpm. Figured the proper next step would be to get a boost controller and set it low enough to where fuel cut wouldn’t be a concern but for whatever reason my boost controllers not really controlling much which I’m still troubleshooting. In any case, I’m thinking the next important step is to get some fuel management software and learn to tune on this car so as I can get injectors and a fuel pump and no longer have fuel cut. Sound about right? Anything else I should keep in mind/think about doing as well? Any help is appreciated!

Still have to look up how to do the boost leak test and will be doing it as soon as possible.
Yes you have to, especially if you are running a MAF sensor. Boost leak also causes similar behavior like your video. You can easily find a lot of threads in this forum or videos in google for how to run a boost leak test.

A 16g at wastegate actuator boost level might as well be the stock turbo at the same boost level. You're just misfiring.
Oh awesome so I can actually use my motor very exciting 😂

Is it expensive to stop running a MAF sensor? I read it is pretty regularly done to these cars but don’t really understand why you’d do it or the implications of doing it.

One important advice. Make your car run good with the parts you have now. Do not even think to modify the car more before making it run as it should. This is kinda common mistake of new people. More modifications on the car that doesn't run well for now will just make the situation more complicated. As a matter of fact, many people give up and end up to sell the car or part out before making it run well because of this mistake. That's just sad, so we are trying to avoid that happened.

Absolutely, i had started to think oh well just small things like intake or exhaust whatnot but clearly with these cars maintenance is the priority. Which I thought would be an issue but honestly I have so much fun in it now, I can’t imagine how I’ll feel with no real “worries” reliability wise once I’ve actually caught up on maintenance and whatnot.

Not just these cars. Any car that's 25 to 30 years old. It is what it is. Worn components, gaskets, seals etc. With a car of this caliber it is imperative to prioritize maintenance first.

Your O'riellys website says they stocked the NGK plugs, just FYI. :)

The man isn't wrong. In fact, what he's saying has been true on these cars for at least the last 20 years.

"Maintenance 1st, Modify 2nd" was something that caught people even back in the early 2000s.

Now, it's exponentially *MORE* important.

Alright we’ll I’ve officially got acces to the last 3k rpm which is pretty awesome, when doing pills it dosent feel very safe or much point to going up in that rpm really thought as whatever my wastegate is set to is quite low but I’m fixing the boost gauge after work today so I’ll get some accurate numbers very exciting

Awesome!

Yeah, a 16G at stock boost feels pretty lethargic. I drove around like that for a while until i got the supporting mods and then I had a constant smile on my face with every turn of the key.

What was the fix, just so that the thread is more complete when people go looking for info in the future.... Was it swapping plugs? wires? fixing boost leaks?

so the plugs solved the primary issue?

Yeah to be more specific when looking more closely it actually looked like the spark plug wire in cylinder 4 was messed up, didn’t fit properly and wasent getting good spark.

But you did pull all the plugs to see what condition they are in, right? Just to make there are no surprises like oil on the plugs or evidence that it might be running lean?

Personally, Id change them if I wasnt sure when they were last changed since they are cheap and takes 5 minutes to do so. Great that it is running better tho.
