How much is normal? I can move it probably a couple centimeters, like it doesn't move obviously but its also not 100% unmovable its very very very slight movement.

I am assuming you check by taking off intake and grabbing the end of the shaft?

no-play is brand new

very minimal play is serviceable and good

grind or wear marks on the housing/blades are obviously too much play, and if you can hear it clink up and down, its trash!!! imo

Actually a little side to side is not bad as long as the blades dont touch. The bad shaft play is in and out. You want to try and pull it in and out pretty hard, if it moves a good amount its probably rebuild time. Also if its not installed the side to side may go away once oiled.

NO in/out play, as little up/down as possible.

If you can move the shaft enough on your own to make the compressor wheel scrape the housing, your turbo needs rebuilt / replaced.

Don't make it seem like new turbos have no play at all...there was a new Evo III 16G at the shop a couple weeks ago that had more up/down play than many of the turbos that have left my shop with a fresh rebuild.

i rebuilt my evo 3 16g, and its stiff as a rock, its not binding stiff but its has that perfect stiffness u would be looking for.

Well...i don't know to be honest. Haha have only had the car for a short while and bought it as a project. But the guy i bought it from said it had a 16g...BUT the housing said tdo5 i believe so that would tell me its a 14b...BUT it has dual spools? (The blades in the intake side of the turbo) nd noticed some in and out play as well as what seems to be wear grom the blades touching. (Sorry for bad wording, new to turbo builds)

Okay so i went to go look and things are stsrting to look grim...i bought this car with a FMIC that looked like it was from ebay but i thought "who cares its just piping and a front mount" but i think they may have put and ebay turbo on there as well! Im so pissed off! Why people so dumb! Grrr the stamping on the plate said ( engraved not raised) " TD05 TURBO" seems like something china would do. Then below thst it says. SERIALNO: MZ0602234 or something like that... Please someone...say it isnt so! :beatentodeath::cry::banghead::ohdamn:

Its that obvious? Lol WTF! f*** f*** f*** haha this ruins everything! Well on the bright side...whats a good turbo i should swap...currently have stock injectors but fuel is the next thing to be gone over other than the turbo...

Ask @JusMX141 about a good unit, he is the Turbo Guru!!!

Well after some investigating this turbo seems okay, has a tad of in out play and no side to side, i thought it was rubbing but it isnt. Im still going to swap it out soon as i hate ebay crap, but for simple things, things i dont care about like a front mount or piping..but a turbo haha no thanks, but atleast my big fmic "should" catch everything incase it does go boom. Haha :D a turbo from jus would be awesome, i just dont wanna get something ill have to replace later to get to my 450-500hp mark. Atleast this bought me some time...to fix the stripped out jpipe bolt hole!:beatentodeath::banghead::ohdamn:ROFL
