turbo shaft play

To check for shaft play on your 14b turbo (or any turbo for that matter)
First, make sure the car is cool. Then take out the intake pipe and put your fingers in the shaft in the turbine wheel and check for in and out play/ up and down too.

Side to side minimum shaft play is normal. Just make sure the fins don't touch the compressor walls of the turbo. If you have in and out play means your seals are shot and needs to be rebuilt.

yea just spin it and see if it spins freely, and try wiggling it gently and make sure it doesnt wiggle , if it slightly does its ok, but if it wiggles more then slightly then it may be worn, and make sure when you spin it it rotates without any hesistation or that the compresser doesnt feel sticky like it doesnt want to spin smoothly.
