How much is normal? I can move it probably a couple centimeters, like it doesn't move obviously but its also not 100% unmovable its very very very slight movement.

I am assuming you check by taking off intake and grabbing the end of the shaft?

Yeah a little. It was a noob question, LOL
Was jabbing 1990tsi. You will get the same answer from everyone with that question.
Answers will ALWAYS be what are you wanting to do with the car(goals), parts being used( current profile), and budget! Maintenance is the most important. Can't stress that enough
That's all. It's was all in fun. Yes,they are.
Lots of differences between the 2 generations of cars and the 2 turbos as well.
This forum is intended for helping, sharing and ASKING QUESTIONS! So, if you don't know do your research and ask questions. The stupid question is, not asking the question!

Hey guys. My profile has 50 trim because of no 60 trim option. I ran one of Justins bastard 20g's and loved it....then I went to his HX40. It hits like a freight train but of course is laggier but for my car it doesn't matter. It's just about goin fast for a 1/4 mile in mine with full interior and all while looking stock hehehe. She's a sleeper. :) (and much faster than in the profile).

Was teasing ya! I know what you have Mr. Bike slayer :sneaky: ..."I live life a quarter mile at a time"! That sounds so familiar. Hehe

:applause: :p you know it Mr. Wilson! :talon::thumb:
I updated my profile so it was current, I think.
OP...Justin can fix you up and does great work!!!

Well after some investigating this turbo seems okay, has a tad of in out play and no side to side, i thought it was rubbing but it isnt.
If the in/out play exceeds about 1/32" (.030"), the wheel is likely rubbing the housing behind the cover where you can't see it with the turbo fully-assembled as the wheel-to-cover clearance is tighter than most people realize. The general public thinks in/out play is safer but in reality it's the worst type of shaft movement possible.

^ That was a customer's MHI Evo III 16G which had the oiling hole in the thrust plate blocked entirely by a rogue piece of red RTV. Repair bill was rather-expensive as it even allowed the turbine to rub the heat shield which caused excessive heat from the friction, leading to erosion and stress cracks in between the blades.

Atleast this bought me some time...to fix the stripped out jpipe bolt hole!
Yeah you'll definitely want to fix that- a boost leak at the j-pipe flange is quite common and releases metered air to atmosphere which ruins your tune and makes the turbo work harder-than-necessary to get a desired amount of pressure to the engine.

When i turn it while checking for in and out play i dont feel any rubbing but im getting a real 16g from jus or 35r so i think ill be okay for the next few months. Everythings coming together on it though, just made a boost leak tester, going to check for leaks tomorrow, seems like idle went down when i messed with the uic piping so theres gotta be a boost leak/vacuum leak. What would you recommend for the j pipe being stripped? Helicoil? Or tap? I was thinking to try helicoil first then if tht didnt work drill and tap it

Was able to tap it but a stud would be prefered, never thought of it, thanks but now i have more issues as my lower radiator hose just blew in my face as i was messing with the tps cause it kept actin up and felt like it was loosing all power and was stalling and cutting out all sorts of issues
