Trying to remove balance shaft bearings

Everyone talks about using a 32mm socket, I bought one, a craftsman, and it went right through the past the bearing. Perhaps I need another brand our a 34mm if they make that size? The hammer and flat head screw driver method I got from the vfaq did nothing but scratch stuff up. Usa there a special tool available or does anyone have a method of blocking the holes? Like, can't I just plug em up with some bubble gum???

Since you are junking the BS, place the journal of the BS on the edge of the bearing and knock it out
Work it around the bearing, start at 12 then go to 6 oclock then 3 then 9
it will come out

Yes there is special tool, called a cam bearing knocker

Thanks dude! I should've figured that one out. I believe I read that method somewhere suggested for the rear bearing but I guess I didn't quite have the idea visualized and I had to figure out how to get the front one out 1st. So it looks like the same method. I think I read that in the vfaq. Ill try it later. Should be no need for a tool but thanks. MayBE I'll need it...

If it comes down to it, just get new bearings for it. All you are doing is just blocking the oil passages with the bearings. The surfaces can be scratched up since nothing is riding in there.
 
Okay, method worked and got bearings out but ruined rear bearing trying to get it back in. before I order another one and ruin it, does anyone know the trick to getting that one in? Obviously you can't get your arm up there to hold it steady while you bang it in it's 1st mm or so, so I taped it to the end of the shaft to direct it in. But I still couldn't secure a straight entrance for it apparently and just ended up ruining the bearing.

Is there a better way to do this otherwise does anybody have another method for plugging these holes?

Find a socket that is smaller than the first BS bore but larger than the back/rear one

Check the bearing OD for a bevel, either one side or both should have one, if there is no bevel, find a bench grinder and LIGHTLY champher one of the od edges, this will help align the bearing into the bore.

flip the socket backwards, and install the extention inside the socket

tape the ID of the bearing to the flat face of the socket, wad a rag around the extetion to help suport it in the front bearing hole
 
Put the bearing in the freezer for an hour after you do the champher and right before your ready to install.Every little bit helps.

We used a universal bearing driver kit on my engine build, but the rod is MIA. So we bolted the driver to the end of a camshaft and tapped it in that way. Worked like a charm.

The front BS makes a surprisingly good tool. I used the balance shaft to remove the inner front bearing and to replace it. Turned the balance shaft around and used a hammer to tap the bearing out. To put it back in I used a magnet and the balance shaft again. Just used the magnet to hold bearing in place and then tapped it back in using the balance shaft and a hammer. This method has worked great for me as I have done it in 2 of my engines and 2 of my friends engines never ruined a bearing doing it this way.
 
Well I guess I gotta take it easy next time. My bearing is bent now and breaks at that puzzle piece looking seam, but it snaps back and I suppose once I can get it in a little it'll have to conform back to shape to as I hammer it back in. and the edges, both sides are beveled btw.

The rag wadded up will help support the extention

when you go to knock in the inner bearingand the extention is comming out the front bearing bore, wad/wrap the extention so it fill the outter bering bore, this will help hold everything stright when you go to tap it in

Thank you all so much! I got it! I used the front shaft method and I stole the bearing from the other shaft. Lucky it was the same size AND without the oiling hole! I put it in a couple mm's too far but not enough to expose the oiling hole and it doesn't feel like it's going anywhere so unless someone tells me it's gotta be perfect I'll just leave it. Man, that bearing almost made me cry! Thanks again...
