Aloha,
Ok, I found a transmission (several actually) and I am getting it for $300. The problem is I can't get a decent price for shipping. UPS-$550, un-named freight companies-$550, FED-EX ground-$206 Can anyone suggest a better option or a cheaper agency that I can try. The package is 125lbs going from 25271(WV) to 96826(HI) Thanks for any help you guys can offer.

Be sure to fill the container with those styrofoam 'S' thingies before you ship.
I hope this was an attempt at sarcasm and not real advice WTF

Just follow the detailed step-by-step procedure on Shepracing's Site
Put the transmission inside and then fill the remaining space with either cardboard or Styrofoam (not peanuts)
:dsm:

I would hope it's sarcasm as well. I went to TRE for my trans rebuild. I just paid for one of their preformed styrofoam filled boxes. That seemed to work just fine. And it was a perfect snug fit. And 75 bux isn't all that bad for round trip shipping from PA to MI.

Whoops.

it's been an 'off' day for me.

On sheptrans.com, after clicking on 'DSM', there's shipping instructions at the bottom of the page.

Hope this one helps.

I'm about to send my tranny off to Shep for a rebuild. His website says go to Walmart and get Contico Pro-Tuff bin for around $35. I went to two local Walmart but couldnt find any. I'm thinking of maybe I can order the shipping box from TRE. I'm open for suggestions on other alternatives.

If anybody know where I can get one of those Contino Pro-Tuff bin or got some pics, I'd really appreciate! :thumb:

ps. I did search but didn't find what I was looking for.

Get it from Walmart. The Big Bin.. It work. I've shipped it before and doing it again tonite

I just wanted to know how I'd go about shipping a tranny? First of all I cant figure out how much they weigh to calculate a cost, and second Im confused about how to package something like that.

Any of you experienced shippers feel free to chime in here and help me out.

Thanks alot:thumb:

I got a big rubbermaid thing from Target. Put some plywood or something like that on the bottom, underneath the tranny. Wrap the tranny in a few garbage bags. Pack cardboard or something in there so the tranny doesn't move inside the box. Put some screws through the lid so it doesn't come off. Mine weighed close to 120lbs, packaged up.

Exactly what i did. I don't remember the actual weight, but once it is out put it on a scale and see how much it weighs.

TRE will sell you a foam-injected, pre-moulded box that is perfect for shipping transmissions.
130lbs for an AWD trans. $75 for the box from TRE.

Has anyone here shipped a transmission. I found a buyer for mine, but I need to find a way to get it to him.

TRE uses a foam filled/packed box. Its expensive but it will protect the tranny greatly. Also make sure you get insurance on it.

Make sure you drain it first and put it in a garbage bag to catch anything else. Then pack it in a big box with a ton of foam around it. I shipped mine UPS. They'll take anything up to 150lbs so you're good.
Tons of people here do it shipping their transmissions to TRE, Shep, Jack etc.

I would use one of those large plastic moving containers if I were to ship one.
As mentioned earlier, drain the transmission and put a bag or two around it; then pack it full of foam.
Insurance is a must when shipping anything valued over $100. If you ever worked for a major shipping company, you would know why.

When I shipped my tranny out to Shep, I bought a Rubbermaid container and filled it with foam and cardboard. Worked great. Since you're selling your tranny, you could arrange to have him ship the empty container back to you when done.

Thats what I did, and then drilled holes in the lid and zip tied it shut. Fedex really beat up the box, but the trans made it through ok.

The safest thing to do this is to build yourself a small crate out of 2x4's and plywood. Measure your trans, build a small frame so that you can use 2 or 3 bolt holes from the trans to fasten the transmission to your crate. Fasten it down, add 4 uprights, another frame above and use the plywood to cover the sides. You can also use 1x2's and 3/8th plywood if weight is an issue. Cut some hand holes in the sides and your ready to ship.
Don't forget to drain the transmission and buy insurance. If the buyers paying for shipping, insurance is only another 3-4 dollars. Buy it, its worth it, and if something happens, you don't deal with it, the insurance does.

I had one shipped in a cardboard box once, actually two boxes, one inside the other with backing peanuts around it. Cardboard box equals problems. Don't do it, your just asking for someone to throw it around, stab it with a fork, or drop it.

The box and foam works great, except that its not quite as easy as you think. I ship pumps like this all the time. You would need to wrap the transmission in a garbage bag, find a waxed box, and some expandable foam (the can stuff doesn't work here). Spray some into the lower portion of the box, let it set up, spray some more, put your covered trans in, and cover the top of the trans in foam. Quickly close the box and hope you didn't use too much and blow the box out. You want the foam compressed, not airy like can foam.

A large plastic moving container sounds easier, quicker and a lot cheaper to me then building some box out of wood.

I should have wrote safest.

It may take more time than putting it in a plastic bin, but its not going to be moving around having the opportunity to hit something in transit, or brake out of the bin. Not to mention the possibility that someone rams a fork through the container.

Which is the best company? and lets say from MD to ATL what would be a resonable price to charge?

This is a 1g AWD transmission by the way.
thanks

got someone local that will buy the trans off of you if u dont want to ship saw your thread on mdstreetscene

I shipped a 1g AWD trans a month or so ago, I sent it from PA to TX and I think it was like 125.00. Go to a fedex plant. Their the cheapest. Not just a ordinary store that ships, I mean like a main fedex if you have one local. Mines 25 mins away but its worth it for me. good luck. charge 125.00

im waiting on his call............i need it gone
thanks for the fedex idea I am waiting on them to give me a call back on a quote.
