My 91 talon was recently in a wreck and the power steering lines/ res. were damaged. Rather then replace this I was thinking of just doing away with it all together. Just wondering if anyone knew what all needs to be done or if anyone has any thoughts against this that may not have crossed my mind.
Thanx,
Dan

i have a 90 talon tsi and i am trying to put on a big 16g turbo, but i cannot get the power steering pump and bracket assembly out of the way (in order to remove the exhaust manifold). i have undone every bolt i can see, and i still cannot remove the power steering, i dont know why the hell i cant get it out of my way. if anyone can help me out here i would really appreciate it thanks.

You shouldn't have to remove the the power steering bracket to remove the exhaust manifold. With the right tools you can gain access to all of the exhaust manifold bolts. If you INSIST that you take it off it, to loosen the power steering pump itself, there are only three bolts. The bracket itself is only held on by two bolts.

i have pulled out my manifold and turbo set-up at least 3 times now including all the lines, and never once did i have to take out my ps

Hey, I just recently replaced my altenator belt because of the need badly! I start the car after I have replaced it and it is ok for about 2 seconds before it starts pumping power steering(I believe). Well for a few days I would start it and it would leak power steering and make a bad noise so I played with my altenator belt for awhile. But then I figured that wasnt it. So I started it a few days ago and turned the wheel and my power steering line that runs to the wheels vacuums tight. Not the metal hosing but the cover hose that goes around the metal hosing. So I figured it wasnt pumping power steering. I think it may be clogged or might of went bad some how. I seen on some other thread that some people just remove the power steering pump setup. I was wondering if anyone thinks that is a good idea or what someone thinks my problem is and what they think I should do...?

I would say there is something plugging the line going from the ps pump to the reserve tank, try taking the line off and seeing if you can blow through it, if you can then likely there is something stuck in the bottom of the ps reserve tank plugging it.

As for removing the PS unless you swap to the manual rack the steering effort will be significantly higher and as I was running that way for a while on my NT laser I wouldn't recomend it. I never tried it with a manual rack but I would assume it would be alot better...

I got it fixed, just took everything off, cleaned it up, and runs better than ever now. Until tomorrow... Dun Dun Dun!

Hello everyone, it's been awhile since I posted on this forum. After selling my project car last year, I bought another 1G shell. :D

I have a general question about removal of power steering on a 1G AWD. I've been reading on the forum about using the balance shaft eliminator kit and using the 1.8L NA manual rack.

My question is what if I uses both the balance shaft eliminator kit and at the same time want to use the 1.8L manual rack? Can I do that?

Also, if I do use the manual rack, what all can I remove? Do I have to re-route or block the manual rack line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

what does a balance shaft removal have to do with a powe steering elimination?
(ofcourse u can do it the same time)

The new rack will not have fluid lines so u can get rid of the pump, resivour, pipes.

Whats up guys...i wanna rip out my power steering pump out of my ride. all i gotta do is drain the fluid, rip the resevoir out, rip the pump out, and take the belt off......right? or is it alot more complicated than it looks....please let me know.

I have a beater car, not my eclipse that was leaking power steering and dam it was hard as hell to turn the wheel. It took me 5 min. to do a Y turn. Are you sure about removing the power steering?

i have a daily driver and i am going to go crazy on my eclipse for power...so i plan on doing on the weight reduction i can....which means i can take all the unnecessary things out of my engine....power steering, ac, etc. power steering looks like the easiest to do first since it's sitting right on top.

Hey i wana know waht are the correct procedures of removing the power steering from my car. I've having issues with it and i dont wana deal with it so i just wana take it out completly. And tips would help also. I have to replaces my alternator too at the same time. Tips NEEDED. Thanks

I dug up some old threads in which it was recommened to turn the wheels left and right to drain the rack following a power steering system removal and I wanted first hand impressions of how difficult the car is to drive at low speed without power steering.

Once again, I'm looking for people who actually have their PS system removed on a 2G or have driven one without PS.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

I tried autocrossing a 2G with the PS removed. Even with street tires (albeit good ones), it just about ripped my arms from my shoulders and I blew several corners simply because I could not turn the wheels. But I'm rather weak. YMMV.

Toby,

My main concern was slow speed manuevering and also accident avoidance. I had a 2GNT that I drove without power steering for a while (the belt had broken) and it about killed me. It also felt incredibly unsafe. The rack was still full and I was hoping that by tuning the wheels to full lock in each direction with the hoses cut to remove the excess fluid, but still allow for some lubrication, that turning would be easier.

Thanks again for the help,

Andy

It wasn't so much to free up crank horsepower, but instead liberate some weight from the front of the car (the cruise and A/C are also coming out). Based on what you've both said, I'll be leaving the PS installed.

Thanks very much for the honest feedback,

Andy

My car is no longer a daily driver. The AC, cruise, and a bunch of other things are gone, but I never considered pulling the PS. If the car is going to be autocrossed or road-raced, the one thing I'd suggest (even if I didn't do it, myself) is to get an alternator relocation bracket and move it to where the AC compressor was. The time to do this is while the intake is off to get the compressor out. Not only does this move weight back, but rumor has it our alternators would last longer if they were hanging right next to the downpipe. Plus, this frees up room for things like an oil-feed to a fancy turbo or a relocated oil-filter and air-to-oil cooler. Other nose-weight savers would include a SMIM and one of those cheapo Summitt tubular headers.
