My 91 talon was recently in a wreck and the power steering lines/ res. were damaged. Rather then replace this I was thinking of just doing away with it all together. Just wondering if anyone knew what all needs to be done or if anyone has any thoughts against this that may not have crossed my mind.
Thanx,
Dan

There are many other places to shave weight from. I would advice against removing your power steering unless the car's sole focus will be on a road racing track or a dragstrip, where turns are less drastic and transitional at slow speeds.

Better eat your wheaties if you decide to remove it.

You will end up with Popeye arms. I had a bad PS pump in my Talon, and nothing was more difficult than trying to make a low speed turn in that heavy thing. Save your arms, keep the pump.

My car is no longer a daily driver. The AC, cruise, and a bunch of other things are gone, but I never considered pulling the PS. If the car is going to be autocrossed or road-raced, the one thing I'd suggest (even if I didn't do it, myself) is to get an alternator relocation bracket and move it to where the AC compressor was. The time to do this is while the intake is off to get the compressor out. Not only does this move weight back, but rumor has it our alternators would last longer if they were hanging right next to the downpipe. Plus, this frees up room for things like an oil-feed to a fancy turbo or a relocated oil-filter and air-to-oil cooler. Other nose-weight savers would include a SMIM and one of those cheapo Summitt tubular headers.

So you know where to get an alternator relocation bracket for a 2g?

I drained the rack and looped the hoses on my 1g (fwd turbo) and as long as you get all the fluid out of the rack, it's fine. It's the same as steering my CRX that has real manual steering. The only time I regret it is for tight parallel parking. Once you're going 5mph though, it's not bad at all. I'm not all that strong, either. I did the mod because my PS pump failed and put metal flakes into the fluid, which are now in the rack, and I don't want to replace the rack.

I just removed my power steering in my 91 and I love it but I actually put a manuel rack from a 93 eclipse in it makes a big difference. If you just take out the fluid it's still harder to turn than having a rack that is actually made to not have power steering. Yea it's not for everyone either, it's harder to park and stuff but you can feel the road so much better. I will have to get used to using two hands to make turns but over all I like it.

I have the pump(and everything else) off of my 1g awd and i love it. Its still a power rack, just no power. The whole reason i took mine off was weight savings and to make it simpler(well that and the pump bracket actually broke off! sheered the bolts in half). At first it was a pain, but i got used to it quickly and now i love it. I do plan to put a real manual rack in eventually though. I don't know if 2gs are different than 1gs but thought i'd throw my opinion out here too.

Hey guys ive done multiple searches for removing the power steering in 2gs and all i come up with is 1gs. If i remove the power streeing in my 2g will i need to convert to a manual rack, do they even make one for 2gs?

as far as I know you could not get a 2G with manual steering it was not an option.

He is correct, there are no manual racks for the 2g. Some people cut and cap the lines this however in my opinion is not the safest of set ups.

you could probably replace the leaking parts quite inexpensively- I doubt you could fabricate a way to use an entirely different rack for any reasonable kind of money.

fix the leaks, and if you want, use the vfaq to change the steering so it doesn't vary the power assist.

There are probably a hundred or so Galant VR4's out there with the rear steering removed that have capped off their lines and have run this way for years with no problems.

well just like the headline, but now im left with the two holes (steering fuild in/out) on the steering shaft.just want to know what have some of you done to it.i think it needs to be plug with a bolt?whats the size...is pretty big and short.

take the hose to the hardware store and find a nut that fits the end of the hose and then find a bolt that fits the nut and now you have the plugs for your steering shaft.

I agree the best way is to loop them but why do it in the first place for that supposed 3hp or whatever you will gain.

I don't ask anymore :) Some people just want to do certain things, and that's OK :) There's some odd things that I do to my car that would leave other people scratching their heads too!
