What's the best way to replace the power steering cooler? I've heard of people eliminating it altogether, but if I wanted to save it, then where would I get one? Is there a way I could make one?

Thanx in advance

I have a Slowboy front mount and the power steering cooler was in the way. I just removed the bracket that holds the lines to frame so I could move it around more and put it behind the front fender bracket that is vertical in the center of the car. I secured it with a zip tie and thats it. Never had any problems.

Bingo, that is exactly what you do...

One person on here got a small oil cooler from ebay and used it as a powersteering cooler (I think it is in the tech guides).

theres much more than just one of us that went on ebay and found a 20 dollar power steering cooler to replace the stock power steering cooler. if you redo the cooler and the lines, you can put it anywere, i put it under the headlight on the drivers side, since the resivoir is on that side. i also used this clear tubing (only color they had, i dont care) so its a sweet red color now. the power steering cooler is a simple mod, and if your into autocrossing, it helps (how much i dont know...)

I managed to reorient it and keep it on somehow. If anyone's interested too bad I forgot to take pictures so you'll have to take my word for it! :D

But really if anyone actually wants to know I'll try to remember.

What I meant to say was that one person wrote an article with pictures about his ebay cooler. BTW last time I looked the cheapest cooler I found was $100.

You can order small ones from auto stores for about fifteen bucks. They're only a few inches long by about two inches wide, but that's more than enough cooling for PS fluid.

you can get a p/s cooler from any junkyard - they come stock from the factory on a ton of cars.
( btw i just lost the loop on mine ) if your not road racing you prob dont need it.

my power steering cooler was 30 bucks, because i got into a bid war and got pissed off the other person was trying to out bid me (ebay sellers dream....i know) so i kept bidding, but if i hadnt, they would have won it for 12 bucks....100 bucks is crazy

Ok guys, I got a 95 awd tsi automatic and I've installed the 11x8x1.5 B&M tranny cooler in front of my radiator, I have a spearco fmic thats 3" thick, and fills up the smiley front bumper perfectly, I also have a B&M oil cooler thats 3" taller and 1" wider than the stock tranny cooler, and I want to use the tranny cooler for something so I figured I would do the power steering fluid. So heres my questions:

1) Do you guys just use the rubber line that goes to the power steering fluid container or some other source to plug into the system?

2) Where do you guys put it and since my oil cooler is in my driver side fender, would you zip tie it to the back of the oil cooler and run it there?

I too am going to do this too. Still havent got it all hooked up yet, but I'm placing the OEM tranny cooler in front of the radiator, mounted to the front frame.

1) Just replace the OEM power steering tube cooler and rubber lines with tranny cooler and longer rubber lines

2) Make sure the feed line is in the top most barb on the cooler and make sure you bleed the PS. Dont want any nasty air bubbles in there do we? :notgood:

This may sound dumb, but how do you bleed the power steering system?

Nah, that doesnt sound dumb at all. Dumb would have been not asking if you didnt know!:thumb:

The first pic is from the Mitsubishi Tech Manual, 2nd is from my electronic store bought manual.

Let me know how it turns out! Its my thought that during the winter that the cooler might have to be removed or covered to prevent overcooling. Depends on your climate and driving habits.

I just noticed I didnt really answer your second question properly.

2) You should possibly mount it in front of the radiator if you have room, putting it directly behind the oil cooler might not be to good, the air getting to it has just past the oil cooler and probably pretty hot. That postition might work in winter?

My hard power steering line, that runs underneath the front bumper and support that just goes to about the middle and then lopes back, It broke and I was wondering instead of waiting for a new one to come is if I could just loop it right where it would turn and go to the middle of the front bumper. Would this work or is that extra cooling needed. I just got to get my car up and running again. Thanks

Certainly you should be fine for a Winter in Nebraska~! - Some guys even delete it although I would'nt - If you lost a lotta Fluid you may want to go back with Synthetic.

I just deleted my power steering loop all together. You will see that a lot of people do this and it usually works out just fine.

Since we are on the subject of the power steering cooling. Planning on doing road racing (track), will the deleted power steering cooler will do any damage ?

My thought to that would be to install a small transmission cooler. All the turning the PS temps are going to go sky high. For a DD or drag car getting rid of it is not going to make a hill of beans. But for heavy duty track use GO BIG.:D

In most cases, you have to delete this anyway when you get a big FMIC. ETS says that they have had hundreds of people do this with no conflicting problems. Also trimming of the radiator is usually what must be done to accomplish a short route FMIC.

When I installed my fmic, I moved my powersteering lines closer to the radiator by actually cutting the line itself and replacing the elbow with 3/8 hydraulic hose. I lost probably close to a qt. or so of power steering fluid. Instead of replacing or removing the cooler I would suggest just replacing the broken piece with some 3/8 hose and a couple worm gear clamps. that would be the cheapest fix anyway. And yes, when I installed the fmic, I had to cut a chunk out of the radiator support.

I've completely removed this cooler on two of my DSM's with no problems i have over 50,000 miles on the one since I did the delete. If you feel you need it i have actually seen someone make one out of copper tubing then paint it black.
