I need some tips on how to change the valve seals... im gonna be doing this for a friend how much time can i expcent doing this. and what tools will be needed.....

Appreciate the answers. I thought I had to pull the cams to get at the valve springs, thats great that I don't. I bought this car as a second car/project car and my wife is already complaining about the car being a money pit as she calls it. Also I'm replacing the water pump, drive belts, timing belt, and pulleys/tensioners please let me know if you would recommend changing anything else while the timing belt is off.
Thanks again.

If you are going to be replacing the timing belt, you might as well go ahead and pull the head to do the seals. Then get some ARP studs and a new HG while you at it.

You do have to pull the cams to get at the valve springs. I recommend doing a balance shaft delete while you're at it.

Yea, doing ticky lifters can be done without doing the cams, but the springs - yep, cams gotta come out.

All depends what he wants to do with that GST - keep it as a daily hobby driver, or turn it into a Road Rocket. And right now, with his wife getting on him, and doing the extra of ARPS and balance shaft removal is going to get him into more hauk with the wifey - she just wants him to get the thing running so he can get their lives back to normal.

Let's just help him out right now in getting this ride running.

Trust me: been there and done that with a project and with the wife ---- LOL.

Well I got the new seals in and got everything back together and now the car idles rough at normal operating temp. It jumps from 1500 rpm to about 1000, revs up and down. Anybody else have this problem? Any suggestions?

I found the problem, the exhaust cam was off by a tooth I forgot to set it one tooth clockwise before I tensioned the belt. The car purrs like a kitten now.

It's not hard for me. But it would be hard for somebody who doesn't know how to do an oil change without asking questions. Basically, it depends on your experience.

It is on vfaq under the engine section: Valvespring compressors

The job itself isn't hard. But you do have to have a tool to compress the valve springs. Otherwise all you'd need is that tool, a magnet, and something to pull the seal out of the head. However, i don't know how difficult it is with the head in the car.
i got the head off

Its kind of a pain and time consuming. The easiest way to do the job is to take the head off the car. That way if you happen to drop one of the valve spring retainers it dosen't disapear down one of the oil drain passages. If you decide to do the seals, do them one at a time so you don't get them mixed up. I figured it out with a Haynes shop manual. But they just pull of the valve guides, then you pound the new ones on.

He said the head is off...

So go rent the proper Spring compressor and get to it... Just beshure to oil them up really well before sliding them onto the valve stems.. Or they will get scratched and leak...
