Is it possible to mate the wrong transmission to an engine and have the car run for 2.5k before any problems arise? Also, how many different trannies are there for the 1g's? Sorry to sound like a nOOb. Thanks.

what model of car? AWD, FWD, turbo??? There's a big difference between the FWD turbo and n/a trannies. With AWD there's different spline counts, so it wouldn't bolt up if the transmission was the wrong one. What type of problems are you having?

Well the non turbo f5m22 wont bolt up to a turbo engine unless you have a n/t flywheel and starter plate. The bellhousing is too small for a turbo flywheel. There are the f5m22 n/t fwd, f5m33 turbo fwd, w5m33 awd, and of course the auto trannys. Just find the number on top of the tranny and that will tell you if it's the right one.

Apparently they made another AWD tranny in the later 93 years? Im getting some kind of stuff from the dealer about the tranny i've got is incompatible. How many models did they make for the AWD turbos?

From my learning there are 3 different batches that were made. 90, 91-92, and 93-94 I believe. 90's are different tranny's in their own different linkages, cables etc...91-92 standard tranny to most of us etc. had a 22 spline input shaft for the x-fer case. 93-94 had 23 spline input shaft for the x-fer case and double synsro second. Again trannies are not my specialty but I try to help everyone I can

91-92 and 93-94 trannies are interchangable as long as you change the input shaft, b/c of the different spline count, or switch the tranny and x-fer case together

So basically, its just the input shaft. There's no such thing as the tranny being wrong, unless its the wrong spline? If it was the wrong spline, will a car still run?

the ratio in the transmission has to be the same as your rear axel. If the ratios arent the same it will burn the center diff up. I know some of the imported trannys have different ratios.

turn the drive shaft and cont how many times the rear wheels turn, then turn the transmission and count how many times the out put shaft turns. They should turn the same amount of times. You are checking to see if the front and rear wheels are turning the same amount of revolutions.

there is a easyer way to check it by the codes on the tranny but Im not sure what to look for. I think you got the right tranny because there is no way you could drive 2500 miles with different ratios front and rear. My buddy had the wrong tranny and his car wouldnt hardly roll, it was binding up.

Well mine binds up now, but the dealer is trying to tell me I got the wrong tranny after they just did the transfer case recall after it locked up the rear wheels on the freeway.

If it locked up on the freeway the tranny could be fine, maybe just the transfer case locked up. I've had a transfer case or two lock up on me before.

The transfer case was replaced with the one specific to the model year of my car. The engine however is not the same that came out of this car.

I can try. The car is at the dealer still and not on the rack.

Is it possible to put the wrong splined transfer case on tranny and i'm not talking about moving...? Just mating it.

Okay do you have the original tranny in your car? If so then if they replaced the transfer case to one specific to your car you have the right one. And no if something is wrong with lineing up or bolting up it won't wait 2 to 3 k miles to show up it will show up right away. Your engine doesn't matter because the trans will bolt up to it fine no matter whether it's a 6 or 7 bolt 1g engine. I was running a turbo 6 bolt engine bolted to a n/t auto trans for like a year before I got a built turbo auto trans. Also you can't bolt a 22 spline tranfer case to a 23 spline tranny and vise versa. That is also the only place the spline count comes into play. As far as the gear ratio is concerned. There was only a difference in gear ratio between the Auto cars and the manual cars. All manual cars have the same ratio so your fine there. There could be a problem with the new tranfer case. Food for though have them check that out.

The original motor is not in the car. I replaced it with a jdm motor, but i'm sure its 90-92 somewhere. It has an external oil cooler. The replaced the transfer case with the one specific to the car.

By the way, it seems as though they're dragging their feet. They keep trying to lead me down the path of buying a new tranny. There was nothing wrong with the tranny in the first 2k miles after the swap.

I thought all 1g trannies though had the same gear ratio? Is that true or false?
